Yea, the girl in accounting is my point.  If and when the game is secured they could choose to relaunch at E3 2015(?) for the stage or they could relaunch when ready via some sort of marketing campaign.  A surgical relaunch is just smart business and E3 makes sense.  I'm trying not get my hopes up too high due to the unknowns and a potential lengthy relaunch schedule  :-\  I will now go back to waiting and lurking....

I think they will launch as soon as they feasibly can. Remember, this engine isn't getting any younger. By they time they relaunch (assuming they do) it will be what 11 or 12 years old?

My guess is that they will relaunch do a word of mouth advertising campaign and interviews on MMO sites to take advantage of human interest story "of the game that would not die" and finish 124. Possibly some new development of partially finished stuff if it can be done cheaply

Then announce the development of CoH2 using a new engine.

They would probably keep CoH going and even offer some kind of migration from 1 to 2 (to give those who wouldn't want to play the aging game a reason to do so. It would probably be limited in either in number or time to help players make the move to the new game.

Once CoH2 launches, CoH goes into maintenance mode and active development continues on the sequel.

To me, this is the most likely strategy that a company could use to make the property viable. As much as I love COH (and I do) it was going to continue to shrink over time. It might have been profitable when it was closed, but at some point the cost of patching and maintain the aging software would be significant to the diminishing profits.

It seems to me that a company that wants to relaunch CoH for profit, has to plan for a Coh2 or lose the bulk of its customers when CoT launches.

But we'll see. If it happens it will be a huge comeback story (and also to shove in the gobs of all those who said it couldn't happen and to just move on and quit yer bitchin')

I have no inside knowledge either. It just seems like a reasonable guess that something like this is the easiest way forward.

Yes, I could see that. A cash shop along the lines of what we had as well as points if you subscribe with bonus if you subscribe to both.

One of the things I would look at is even though it is very different, is Doctor Who Legacy. It has a F2P model that involves a cash store and you can in fact get EVERYTHING in the game just by playing. The catch is that it takes a LONG time to do so. So you can grind your way through and get it or spend a little and get it quicker. They even offer incentives to do that by having a special area that you can unlock after a small purchase. The Fan Area has few unlocks that you can get early and drops Time Crystals (the currency of the game) so that you basically get double the number that you paid for.

By the way, I was talking to the wife of friend (both of whom are ex-CoH gamers) and she was surprised to learn about the current community and even the efforts to resurrect the game.

This (even though apocryphal) emphasizes what has been said about reaching out to former players who have little or no clue when the time comes. Her opinion was that she would be unlikely to play if she couldn't recover all the characters she had invested so much time into. While I would be OK with a wipe that caused a reset, I think if there is any reasonable way to recover this data it ought to be tried.

I believe a sizable number of former players would at least take a look if they could get their old characters back. Even if they just showed for events like Double XP and holiday events it would be worthwhile. It would also make marketing a potential sequel much easier when you have a dedicated and captive audience.

I have to say with some of the speculation I have had to bite my tongue more than once.

It's okay, we're using the time productively. I'm trying to teach the drinks synthesizer to make tea. I've been explaining to it about bone china and Ceylon and India...

If City of Heroes comes back not only we'll make history but, do you think it's possible to make a movie about how the CoH community brought back City of Heroes? I'm pretty sure the title of the movie would obviously be called #SaveCoH. That would be AWESOME!!!  :P

Maybe just a detail but an important one, we don't expect the announcement in question tomorrow or next week or anything closely. Just saying so we don't get tons of impatient people asking "When?" every two posts.
