How in the world, today, is someone supposed to make it on 5 GB a month of Internet?

This billing month so far (2 weeks in) I did 1 Andrith run for fun and nearly all the rest of my online time was spent logging in at the busier times (and parking myself in a low bandwidth area like Monster Island) with toons that need all 3 normal Alerts (at the least) so I can run dailies efficiently and log off.

Sounds like big fun online gaming huh?

And I'm STILL 200 mb over for the month already. (edit: not for the entire month. For the month-to-date. 5gb a month = ~ 165 mb a day so I've already used today's and part of tomorrow's bandwidth), And have a big fat video driver update + my daily (damn near..) Flash player update is waiting.

I got gouged like this when Neverwinter Nights was new.. I got gouged like this when Cable Internet was new in another country I lived in at the time. Did they need to charge me $500 a month to play NWN or have Cable Internet to play EverQuest with? No. They did it because they COULD. Because there was no competition.

I can download my bandwidth limit for the Entire Month in < 1 hour. W   t   youknowwhat.

/flip gouging opportunists. Like Verizon.

They usually end up getting ~ $55 bucks a month from me and I stay close to the limit. When I lived in town I had the best Internet I've had, ever, and I could always glom on to some $35 - $55 a month deal (maybe I had to switch now and then..) and be watching my Netflix & whatever other video, playing whenever. I nonstop had some kind of video or other activity going on when I was home. And the speed... Oi..

Now, I have the speed, but, 5gig? Come on.. 5 gig is nothing and I hate paying them $55 already.

Sure, I live in the bush now and 2 years ago the best thing in this area was dialup.. But town is like a 5 minute drive away.

Feels like when NWN went from like $500+ a month (in per minute fees if you played regularly..) to ~ $22 a month flat rate or when my cable Internet bill went from $500 a month to ~ $45 a month and the local tech shop guy that also provided the village Internet got a fancy new storefront with all kinds of bling. Whereas before he milked us dry, he had this dusty shop where his huge arse mangy dog slept. (I liked the dog. Just finishing the Rant with a bang  : )

Was more just trying to commiserate a bit and also find out why you are only allowed 5 Gigs a month.
If I understand it right, it's the only thing available where you're at...

Yeah it's the only thing here. Today. And Verizon is capitalizing as best they can. Boo hoo. It won't be this way forever and everyone has their lil crosses to bear. That was my thinking behind your quote. I don't like posting moany stuff but, well, this is definitely a moan. Sooo, shame on me.

Had I moved back here 5 years ago... I'd have been stuck with dialup! And with not even the prospect of anything else. oi.. Nightmare. I've been plugged into the Internet since the first average shmo could be & with virtually non-stop service. There was *1* move that took awhile for me to get back online - the $500 a month nice doggy guy.

It's been over two (three?) years now, though, that they've offered wireless service to this area and every so often I get the uncontrollable urge to drag their name through the mud for being opportunists. Offering someone a month's service and the tool to eat ALL of it in < hour, is .. idiotic? Crack-dealerish? Blatantly.. wrong?

I just know I'll look back at this someday just like I do the thing with NWN and Mr. Poochie.

Thanks for the good wishes! I'll take'em hehe. All things change, huh. Like my sub will, as soon as any other competition at all comes to this area.

Things are rocking in CO. Never had more fun there and I've had a lot of fun in CO and I'm still a newb. Looking forward to more to do and more bandwidth to do it with  : )
