So...much...anger...Pax East '13

So here is a pic of the massive booth promoting the next game that will get axed by NCSoft.  I was so livid when I saw this.  I wanted to go off on the people working the booth but they are just another small developer, Carbine Studios, soon to be gobbled up and spit out by NCSoft.  I did not.  Plus I was with my nephew so I had to have some 'adultness' to my actions.  I did wear a CoH shirt that I bought at Pax East three years ago but it felt so...little?

I sat in on the panel on the Marvel MMO.  It is fun but I am pretty sure all of you already know, it is no substitute as it is nothing but Diablo with a Marvel skin.  Sigh.

My best to all those that fought the good fight and to those still continuing.

Judging from the picture alone, it doesn't look like people were all that interested. You'd think people would swarm for the chance to play spaceWoW featuring flying houses and totally-not-red-eredar knockoffs and bunny girls.

Was it really as dead as it looks or is the crowd on the other side of the booth?

As I've always said, advertising budgets go to games when they launch or near launching, and the holiday season if it's less than a year old.

There is a lot of positive buzz on Wildstar.  I would not be surprised if it does just as well as GW2 in it's first couple of quarters.

I hope that is some really good positive buzz, because that is likely all the advertising the game will get in Western markets.

FatherXmas

Just look at GW2.  Anything since that Hobbit spot?  Lots of stuff in MMO blogs/sites but I haven't heard about any ads.  Heck I don't think I've seen a copy in a store since the holidays.  I might have seen the gem cards but no game.

Of course Blizzard games are always in stock.  Tell me that isn't because Act/Bliz is paying retailers to always keep at least one of everything WoW on the shelf?

In case of Lineage 2, I can help with Questions and i would suggest to try it out. Use Chronos server

Lineage 2 is Free 2 Play with a Cash shop.

Cash shop has much needed XP Items, and gambling type Items for more power, that draw in the money. Rest isnt intresting or useful.

Lineage 2 is as Old as City of Heroes and WoW
I played it in the Open Beta and afterwards, then some years later again.

Lineage 2 has an open world, you can run from Gludin to Aden ( takes around 30 min on foot, if you survive the trip )
Lineage 2 has a beautyful scenery. I enjoyed wandering there. GW2 is more beautiful, but much smaller and more crowded.

Lineage 2 focuses on PvP, and the hard work(PvE) to get ready to do it.
Competitive PvP needs max Level, a PvP oriented Clan, Maxxed out gear and of course some Items from the Cash shop and probably something else you will notice easy, just by watching hero chat.

PvP on the other hand begins at lvl 6. of 99. At level 6 your beginner PvP protection goes away. You can refresh it up to lvl 20 if you want. To attack a monster you target and attack it. To Attack a player hold down ctrl-Key and the rest is the same. :-)

Names are color Coded.
White are currently not attacking a player.
purple are currently in a combat with a player,
Red killed a white player.
green have a free PK. their name turns white if they kill a white, instead of red.

The Game was always very grindy. In the beginning it took me some weeks to get to lvl 30. Also it has the grind for gear and the grind for XP. Good spots are fought over.
Death has an XP-Penality, and red players can drop gear on death.

With the awakening of Shillen, one of the last BIG game Updates, the Grind moved
The Max Level was 85 bevore, it moved up to 99.
At the start you choose a race and a basic class. the class path splits up into additional classes at 20 and 40.
Then you are for example a Blade dancer, a Titan, a Shillen Elder, or one of the 36 classes. With 76 a further Power leap occurs, but it doesnt affect your class, until 85.
Theese early levels are now really fast. You could get to 20 in a few hours, and the Path to Awakening from the website, helps in staying geared. With a Mentor providing mentor Buffs, you can blaze to 85 now
Something I did over the course of 3 Years before.

with 85 evrything changes.

The last of the Giants, the survivor of thier war against the Goods, senses your power and offers you a chance to get the power of the Giants. to be able to fight Shillen, the Goddess of Death.
When you take the power, (and you need it) you transform into one of the Giant Base classes. That is Healer, Knight(Tank), Warror(AE Melee DPS), Archer, Rogue(single target DPS), Enchanter(Buffer/debuffer), Summoner(Pets and debuff multi purpose) or wizard.
You get a major boost in HP and stats and complete new skills, with only a few from your old class.
And now you are ready. the real grind of L2 has gotten to you. until 90 it is manageable, but afterwards you dont see progress without dedication and a hefty dose of cash for stacking XP Items.

I say look if you like it. I have a much Love/Hate relationship to Lineage 2
In my opinion the complete free world and PvP together with clans fighting for supremacy, fighting for the castles is one of te best PvP systems i know, because it further politics between clans, which could form alliances, break the alliance in the middle of a battle, to try for the castle themselves.

You can play on private servers, there's a multitude of them and not all use completely broken experience rates. Enjoy the game while sticking it to the man. (I'd link you, but I assume we're not allowed to post links to pservers...)

LydiaFrost

I prefer the Original.

And why do you need private servers, when the original is free and regulary updated.

I really dont know what you want to say with the pic or your post.

...embodies everything I loathe in mmog's.

CoH was the one thing on the buffet that wasn't the same old Low-Fat Tuna Salad. I won't go back until the menu changes.

I'd assume private servers don't have the "pay to win" system in place and that cash shop items are obtainable through drops or ingame currency. But all K-grinders are the same snoozefest in my eyes, so whatever.

All of those are reasons why many former CoH players will never play it, and that's before taking into account that NCSoft's grubby mits are all over it.

Most people didn't like PvP, grinding for loot and exp shouldn't "require" cash shop purchases to just advance in the game, and I use the term "require" loosely since NCSoft likely would charge us to level past level 5 in your F2P game if they thought hey could get away with it, and honestly the game suffers from a closed-minded ideal that having a new pair of boots makes you swing your sword harder, and the tired old mandatory cookie cutter groups of tank/healorz/dps that punishes the individuality that we're all so spoiled to have had in CoH...

If that's the type of game you enjoy, more power to ya, but don't be too surprised that many on this forum aren't looking for that type of game.

Actually, pservers tend to be worse in the "pay to win" department, usually via paypal donations giving you a Sword of the Umptenth Slayer with 100x the stats of the best gear in the vanilla game, turning you into something stuck halfway between plebian player and fully immortal GM. If you ever play a private server ANYTHING that has PVP, avoid the ones that do this, or mentally prepare yourself for losing to said donators if ever/when ever they feel like winning (Read: Most of the time)

I'd assume that private servers have some sort of [ahem] ingratiate-yourself-to-the-owner-to-win-system.

PvP on a private server not corrupt? I'd sooner believe in the tooth fairy.

I agree that L2 is completly different from CoH. It is very restrictive now, and the awakening to the typical core classes is something the L2 community didnt like.
They even made a Poll in Korea how to change the Game again, so it would get the players back. They lost some of their Korean customers, after the shiny of the awakening wore of.
We were informed of the poll by our Korean speakers, when it was up in Korea. The funny tidbit about this, is, that when we got the same poll in the official Western Forums the Poll was already decided and the Korean L2 Forums already had concepts of the changes. That shows how strongly NCSoft feels about its western audience ;-)

But at the core I still think the Idea of building a strong clan, working for upgrades together, fight for Server supremacy in the end, and doing politics  is something thats unique.
The concept though got eroded through botting and real money transfers long before L2 became free to play.
NC soft couldnt and still cant handle the bot armies, that essentially destroy a core concept of the game. But thats another story.

I strongly dislike the Red vs Blue settings like wow, since they even forbid politics, by not being able to talk to the other faction and the red always stays red even if it would be better to form a temporary alliance, or change sides completly. Such freedoms are in L2, but not in WOW and in GW2 neither.
In CoH we at least could talk to each other, and we had Cooperatve zones, where red and blue gould work together.

I described the game, so you could make a decision of trying it. :-)

I wouldnt advise a Private server, since you will never get the feel of the games concepts, if the core concepts get eroded by a high rate server, that essentially is just a donator haven.

I hope my descriptions of the game help you.

I love tuna, and low-fat tuna, and tuna sandwiches and tuna salad...

But it's tuna in a can versus grilled Mahi Mahi with roasted raspberry chipotle sauce...
