Title: Curse you, Icon!
Post by: Phaetan on April 29, 2013, 10:20:21 AM
So, I explained a couple weeks ago to a player in my AMber game that you could still use the character creator with the clever adjustments from here and gave him a copy of the files and showed how to fire it up.  After watching him recreate his favorite character from CoH and mess with the forearm sliders a bit, I got hit with massive nostalgia regarding how much fun the completely different characters you could make were.

*sigh*

@#*&$^@*&@^#$!!!!!! NCSoft...

Ditto  :-\

ICON is a blessing and a curse; being able to still make characters is fantastic, but not being able to play with said characters is awful.

I use Icon to make a tabletop RPG character's picture for the character sheet, such as D&D/Pathfinder (fantasy), or Champions, which the recent campaign never got started  :( .

Although, for a science fiction RPG I can't seem to make a one piece jumpsuit for starship crew.

Right now, I am using ICON to create visualization of some of my fan-fiction characters.

I used it to create all but one of the toons for this wallpaper....https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=591795250831770&set=oa.175048929313400&type=1&theater  (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=591795250831770&set=oa.175048929313400&type=1&theater)

You can really tell which one doesn't fit. Clearly its Nebularian.

But seriously, Icon gives me that shot of coh-drug that keeps me going through the waiting, I'm so glad it was something that we got early on, and not something that took us a couple years to figure out. its a great tool.

So long as I stop trying to log into Atlas Park after I'm done creating the chartacters, I really enjoy it. The problem is resisting that urge, haha.

I've created some characters I always wanted to create but couldn't because I didn't have the costume pieces. That's something I've loved about Icon.

For something fabric-like, try Jackets -> Dress Shirt with Military Formal or Victorian Steampunk 2 sleeves, and your choice of Bottom between Tucked In, Tight Pants or Pants -> Camo depending the look you are going for.
If you're going for a skintight look, Tights Smooth or Bodysuit Muscled might be what you need. :)

Glad to know I'm not the only one using it to mock up (N)PCs for gaming purposes and the like.  Still want to log in and pick on some Goldside Clockwork, though...

I thought goldside clockwork were SO cool. I always wanted to try out their powers - felt like an arm mounted cannon like the ones they have was always missing from the game.

Well, if I lived in somewhere where I could get a GURPS Supers campaign going, I'd be using Icon for that :)  Great idea.

(Digging through old conversion sheets..hmmmm LSH from DC to Champions to GURPS  LOL)

Assuming you haven't, check out http://roll20.net or http://www.infrno.net/ if you can't find anyone around. Google Hangouts did great things for people playing pen and paper RPGs, online.

You know you can now with the latest update.

you can go into atlas, or outbreak or the villain or praetorian starting zones. and walk around and use /fly to fly your hero around.

Its empty but its a joy to do something I never thought I would do again.

Better - you can switch between zones too. :)

It's totally methadone. It takes the edge off for a while, but then it sorta makes you miss Paragon that much more.

Still, its WAAAAY better than nothing.

How do you do that? Switch between zones?

I'm very much loving Icon; it's really just what I needed, as someone else said, to keep me going.  It's weird, really, because I'd rather either make my old toons or come up with new ones then fly around AP or wherever than play any other game right now.  Not sure if that makes me really pathetic or the other mmo's really pathetic.  Maybe both.

Then we are both pathetic. I feel the same way. I have spent more time in an empty Atlas than playing DCU or CO this last week or so.

You need a map name - there are several lists linked to in the Icon thread . Pick one, copy it, then start Icon. In any starting zone then press F1, paste the map name into the dialog and click OK.  Bam, you're in whatever map you chose.

Yeah, Icon is now capable of letting ypu fly around every zone, and spawn every NPC in the game wherever you want.  It's not the real deal, but it's much, much better than when I started this topic.

If you don't have Icon 1.6, get over there and grab it now.

You can make practically every NPC do any animation you want, too.

The Nemesis Monstrosity can dance, as can huge Rularuu, last I checked.

Your own character too, but limited to animations which only work with player characters.

Wow.  Thanks for the links!  Think I will check these out and see if some one has a Traveller campaign going  ;D

Here are two Traveller games on Roll20 that seem to be looking for players at the moment:
https://app.roll20.net/lfg/search/traveller?days=&dayhours=&frequency=&timeofday=&timeofday_seconds=&language=Any&newplayer=false

I already have an account there that I've been using to toy around with possibly running a Praetoria game, so it was quick to check for you.

So far you can create a toon, log into a zone, run around, fly.

But the fact that powers won't toggle on or emotes don't work from the list means that was a server side issue then?

I thought to at least toggle powers or emotes would be a local thing.

The /mov associated with each emote is executed locally.  That you can do in Icon.

The interpretation from an emote to a /mov had a few more moving parts.

Though someday I hope to be able to pick and emote from the list like the good ole days.

I'm just happy Codewalker has done everything he has so far.  I just hope it's not taking away from any time he is (or maybe) working on a server to actually play with you fine folks again.

First of all...Kudos to Codewalker.   I am STILL loving the ability to fly around the city again.

But one thing this has pointed out to me is that, though it might be a bit difficult, offline play/capability IS possible!

Naturally such offline content would naturally be extremely limited.....but then, so was the old Unreal Tournament or Call of Duty (1 and 2)....and I STILL play them a lot.

I hope the three Project Z programs (and I am now counting Valiance along side the Phoenix Project and Heroes & Villains)  take note of this.

I am in no way dissing Codewalker here.  In fact, I thank you so very much for showing that offline content is NOT a pipe dream.
