HEATSTROKE

Ive never had a problem getting a name or coming up with a name and I had like 48 characters

silvers1

I absolutely hated the name@global system in neverwinter.    If I come up with a name, I want it to be unique to me.
Cannot tell you how many Drizzt's, Gandalf's,and Legolas's I saw running around.

I never had many problems coming up with a new name in CoH.  Were there names I wished were available? Yes, but someone else
got them first, and I was fine with that.

CoX naming conventions were freakin' awesome compared to WoW or some other mmos I had a light dalliance with after the recent unpleasantness.

That's fine, but CoH's system penalized players who came in years after names they may think of were taken. Most people were reasonably clever, but creativity of one person can only go so far when there are hundreds of players who have been taking similar names for years. Plus, it may turn off someone who finds the game years later, and has a concept and name they're set on, only to find that they can't have it - in a game that supposedly has the best character creator in existence.
Nice job dissecting my post in order to take out all of the pertinent information that goes against what you then tried to talk about. ;)

I repeat: I was making more characters in 2012 than I was in any previous year. I made hundreds of characters over the years (and deleted most of them...). I rarely had issues with unique names. Of course, I was never *ABSOLUTELY MARRIED* to a name (and if I was, I'd just switch servers because I wasn't *ABSOLUTELY MARRIED* to a server either) - if you limit yourself, that's not a failure of the game's naming system.

By default, names may be reused unless a player reserves a name as unique... which they'll have to pay a fee to do each time. $$$  8)

Or better yet, put Name Reservation Tokens in lock boxes.  ;D

I always found the character limit on CoX to be more of a problem than other people having the name i wanted.

And it's nice to know joshex is grooming the next generation of chinese gold farmers.

Wasn't there like 32 characters? lol

Vee

not sure, but i ran out several times. definitely not 32 as there weren't enough characters for me to make 'Droopy-eyed Armless Child' during the Charlie Sheen interview craze. I had to settle for Droopy I. Armlesskid, which is its own minor tragedy. Paragonwiki doesn't say but my guess would be 20 was the cap or i'd not have had to make child into kid.

All I know is, after several years, Master of Disaster finally fit without smashing any of it together (unlike back at launch).  Woo!

So at some point that name line had character spaces added to it. :)

Yeah, character limit kept me from using "Crazy Eddie Pistol Pants"

But that's your *individual* creativity. It stands to reason that one person isn't going to trip over their own names, or repeat the exact same name (too often-same character with different powers is one issue there, but not alleviated by the char@player solution anyways.). The issue I'm talking about is when you have years of people such as yourself, creating hundreds of characters, each with their own unique creative name, you're going to get at least some portion of later arrivers finding themselves disappointed.

So what I snipped actually helps my argument: the more people there are making more names before someone joins the game, the more likely it is that it will cause issues for others.

This is true. I've found it an issue in Paragon Chat, since we can't see globals so I try to add "Felder" to the character name when I can.
I used CIT before they even joined the Titan network! But then I left for a long ol' time, and came back. Now I edit the wiki.

I'm not fond of the way "penalized" is being used here, as it was often used to describe any situation in which people didn't get whatever they wanted.  If I can't have the name I want just because someone else has been using it for the last five years, I'm being penalized.  If I just started playing yesterday I'm being penalized if I can't afford to buy the things long time players have saved up to buy.  If I want to use a costume piece that is unlocked via content I don't want to play, I'm being penalized.  None of these things are penalties.  If you want to fly but don't want to take the flight power, you're not being penalized by gravity.

Requiring unique names may not be desirable by everyone, but it penalizes no one.  There are advantages and disadvantages to unique character naming, and the people who want to use a name even if it is already taken have no more valid a desire than those that want their character names to be unique.  There are some technical compromises you can make, but ultimately this is a situation where you get to decide whose preference to validate and whose to ignore.

about the only way I can see someone being "penalized" would that if they want a name that is taken, but it was on an account that was inactive, be it trial account or someone that left the game and the name remained on their character.

I wanted to name one of my tankers "Supa Dupa Oompa Loompa", which was too long at 22 characters.

All right, penalized was the wrong word. I value being able to get the name I want using the char@player system more than I value unique names.

Remove two spaces. SupaDupa OompaLoompa. Hmmm... Does look weird.

As to the game: considering negotiations actually started Spring-ish 2014, what's an actual good "despair" date? End on the fiscal 2016 year?

I would say October 23, 2077

If you wait too long you might completely miss out on a perfectly good despair.
