Just a quick little tid bit about private servers, reverse engineering wouldn't be required of a certain dev had the source already. We've had this discussion several times, the problem occurs when it would be traceable back to that dev leaving them liable for lawsuits from NCsoft. So that is why IF there are any private servers they would be kept extremely hush hush.

As far as it being static, well if you had source and a few good coders I'm sure you could develop the game on a continual basis. I for one would happily replay CoH with a small group of people and keep it secret. I'm sure most of us would at this point.

That's just my two cents though, and I'm crazy like a fox.

No argument here. If I had a fully functional "secret private server" in my house where I and my friends could play to our heart's content, that would still be a pretty lonely game.

Agreed. I can only hope the SCORE team gets their creation done and proliferated so the world at large can once again enjoy COH. I'd also take a certain amount of satisfaction if I found out that NCSoft was upset at their impotence to do anything to shut the new servers down. Can't put out a C&D for software you didn't create :) even if it talks to software you did create (and people legit purchased).

I never got the chance to try Darkness Affinity(too busy with all my other toons)is it any good?I'm looking at all the different builds and thinking I'll never take another break from the game when it gets back :).So many combo's I want to try,not min/max builds just so I can see how each play.

If such a server existed, the operators would be insane to mention it to anyone they were not 100% certain would not be leaking its existence on Reddit. The only people hearing "rumors" about such a server would be the actual people playing on it, and no one else. In effect, such a server would exist beyond an event horizon: whatever happened there would not be observable in the rest of the universe.

Technically speaking, NCSoft could at any time issue takedown orders for the actual game client, and order all players in possession of the game client to delete it. The EULA for the software didn't just cover the game servers, but the entirety of the game software. We don't own it, we were granted a license to use it. Legally they would be within their rights to terminate our use of the game client.

In practice, I think that's unlikely, but if they were sufficiently annoyed at a reverse engineered server, they could easily attempt to legally prevent us from using the game client. They could also prevent us from using the intellectual property they own the copyright to; in particular the artwork and other game content of the game.

If I had the capability to make a server and share it with the world i'd find a way to do it regardless of a C&D. I really don't give a f*** at this point. This holding game ips hostage pancake is getting old.

I think we've played nice long enough if you ask me. Time to release the hostage we will gladly pay the ransom.

The solution to that is quite simple. You put the server software and full instructions up on Pirate Bay. They would quite literally NEVER be able to shut it down, then. Servers could spring up faster than they could trace them.

Indeed. I keep laughing every time I hear a news story to the effect that "this time the Pirate Pay is shut down for good!" Suuuuuuure it is...

Nope infact tomorrow I will be 29. And we will never get the game back if they don't decide to sell it without either completely recreating the game in our own code or doing something illegal. It will require risks at some point and if they want to try and sue they will try to sue regardless.

Indeed, without our large and thriving community, any such Seekrit Servers would be a truly pyrrhic victory. The owners of the server would win the battle, but lose the war.

I would go, not gonna lie. But it would give me much the same feeling that ICON does now: an echoing sadness instead of joy.

Anyone else feel kinda sad at checking the forums every day for no new news? I kinda feel pathetic/desperate sometimes.

And, I'd rather not see the pirate bay option happen. Best option is community ownership of the game, or a new company ownership. I want legit status.

If a secret server did exist, was legit and not a scam, I would be there in a hot minute. Sure I miss the thriving community but also miss being able to log in and start pulverizing bad guys with my blasters, khelds, ss/fire brutes, etc.
