Oh, I keep my machine well maintained and in tip top form for the best performance possible. Then I crank every game setting to the max possible, to see how bad it can get, and then reduce it bit by bit until I get the performance I want.  In the case of CoH/Icon, everything that can be maxed out, is maxed out, and it's TOO FAST!  Pretty sure that with super speed, I wouldn't be able to control my char at all in tunnels...
I was a pinball in buildings on my super speeders. I also managed to make a Widow that could run as fast as a Super Speeder with Ninja Run. Fun times.

I don't know about you or if it's just icon. But I still can't run around with everything at maximum in icon even with a r9 295x2 in my system. Some places will drop below 22- 30 frames. Especially in rogue isles and imperial city. And sadly cox will not use the second gpu at all. I think the game has lots of issues such as the tree problem they discovered in city of titans because I'm able to run newer games with settings on high and no problems.

You know, when messing with Icon I really haven't bothered with Ultra Mode, and I am not sure why, unless it is the hassle of having to set everything up again, every time I launch it. Now you have me wondering though what it would look like with my new card. . . :D

Sorry to hear about your loss.  I'm sure you're echoing the feelings of a lot of CoH players, in more ways than one.

Amethyst Avenger and Greywolf sound familiar.  i have a feeling we ran across each other on Triumph, maybe in the old days.

We did. If I recall, you had a character you used to run iTrials with called Amethyst Princess. That name stood out to me as it was a hybrid of the names of two characters I had been running since the first few weeks of the game.

And thank you all who responded. It felt important to eulogize my friend here, as some of you may understand. I know this is not by any means the first member of our broad community to pass away. But it was one that struck very close to home for me personally.

I have everything to maximum other than distance and that other setting that bleeds coloring. Turned off shadows. Distance doesn't matter so much because even with it at maximum you really can't see too far because of the damned fog. Turn on accesslevel 9 and turn off the fog if you really want to see how beautiful the game is. Visit the abyss and enjoy the waterfalls that you normally can't see.

All this talk of simple graphics is ok, but I absolutely HAD TOO update my card when Ultra Mode Graphics came around, even then, because of my iffy internet connection I had to curb it some. But I was blown away but Ultra Mode. . . Having seen the UE4.7-ish graphics though, I gotta say I am drooling, and this time I am ready with a high end card already installed! Bring on the visual loving!

I never said the graphics were simple.  They were, in fact, quite advanced.  I did say they have a comic book feel to them which was the point behind the game.  let the players play their personal heroes/villains in a shared comic book.  CoH was one of the first games to take advantage of the Aegis Physx cards.  I had one.  Together with an nvidia 7900GS, the graphics were incredible.  I remember seeing the tail fire from the missles my robot/ff mastermind had.  Talk about impressive.  And, blowing up mailboxes in the police station raids.  letters flew in ways paper would likely fly in such an explosion.

I enjoyed CoX's artstyle because it wasn't overly cartoony, like CO, and it was more 'real'

The only thing that was really 'meh' was the meshes/textures on the player models in comparison to some of the newer stuff, but I never took issue with it because I had a tenancy to play 'faceless' characters (Bandit masks, jester masks, hoods with blindfolds, ect.)

The Cryptic developers "got" the game.  NcSoft didn't.  And I think the differences between those two boil down to culture.  The fan base of CoH consisted of individualistic westerners who appreciated the individualistic elements of the game as they related to character creation and game play.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but the NcSoft games that are big hits in Korea and the Far East have a different dynamic and simply do not play well in the West.  When the shutdown announcement came, the fierceness of the reaction by CoH's fan base stunned the powers that be in NcSoft, and the reluctance of that fan base to transfer its business to their other games, such as Aeion (sp) left them puzzled and confused.

You're not wrong.  Games that appeal to people in Asia often are often not well received by westerners and vise versa.  I can believe NCSoft's management could find it confusing that we weren't happy to see CoH die.  Real life friends of mine who though CoH sucked were stunned to hear the news.

I was left feeling the same way, in that NCSoft really didn't know what they were doing when they were shutting CoH down.  They thought that westerners would go to an extreme hardcore grind with even faker looking people when in reality, western gamers are not the same animal.  Save maybe the WoW players being maaybe close to south korean/japanese gamers in terms of willingness to fall pray to a grindfest, but most other westerners are not interested in a game where it's nothing but an extreme grind.

They also I feel over-estimated the competition city of heroes had, which was perhaps the worst mistake they ever made.  It was like some CO troll went to them and said "Hey, we are way way more popular than your game, shut it down so they have to join us" and they just said "OK."  Course, that didn't really happen, but thing is CO was nearly dead when city of heroes was shut down.  It actually got worst even though it's popularity rised for like, 3-4 months at the most, but then CoH players who did got there got bored and saw it for what it was; an exploitative cash grab without the depth or appeal of city of heroes.

Edit: Though, to be fair, I think the CO community turning into acid might have also had something to do with that.  Way to many anti-socials with no sympathy or empathy, especially when you count the nerf-heads.

I tended to think CO was due to a urine match between Jack and Matt.  Of course, I could be wrong.  Those that played it that I knew all told me it felt half baked.  I didn't even make it out of the tutorial myself once I finally tried it.

Downloaded it back in December.  Some parts of the game felt familiar.  I persevered with my character until I reached level 14 (Yay me!)  I quit one afternoon and haven't booted it up since.

That was 4 months ago...

Yeah, I actually subscribed for a month or two (and freeform characters are a lot more fun than the archetypes), but quit when I realized I hadn't logged in for two weeks even while subscribed.

I even kinda miss my pseudo Bots/Storm Mastermind sometimes (with powers from Gadgetry, Wind, and Electricity), but not enough to want to subscribe again.

The fact that they haven't actually made any major changes or additions has also kept me away.  By now, CoH would have had another dozen powersets, story arcs (including the long-awaited moonbase, and much more), and trials added to it, but CO has only added a few laser sword powers, gimmicky villain fights (where one mistake means you die - granted, some iTrials had fights like that, but that wasn't the only thing CoH added), and a ton of P2W lockboxes (with prizes that are almost immediately nerfed).

I just realized, I don't think I ever shared this with you guys.  I made this a long time ago, slightly inspired by a certain forum poster who made the "Wrench Strike force" and later "A pug play".

http://co-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=264291

I made it way back when I first saw what was happening to CO.  It was then I began to realize how narrow minded and thick-headed some of them were when Gradii was the only one who got it, though she spoiled the joke on everyone *sigh*.

To think, how people treat the rampages these days; they ignore them like the plague.

I might finish that little short story I started writing on my ipad.  Though I still have a name to change in it.

Edit: Another note, the lack of eventfulness and overall blandness in the actual "gameplay" is deliberate.  It was more how the players treated one another, rather than a disaster.

The last part had gotten so bad people made a "Bait and switch" thread, it was later renamed to "Cash shop concerns, nerfs".

http://co-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=266931

What amazed me is how some of the thicker skulled people either don't say anything unless it lines up with their agenda, or they resort to victim blaming.  Though, I think even more stupid, some of the people I disliked most, in this later thread DEFENDED the price hikes after the vehicle scam was blown wide open;

http://co-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=303791

There are other related threads.  It's like those people, that side of the community, was actively attempting to destroy the game.  I feel they succeeded.

the cheesy voice acting got me. the tutorial was annoying, way too long, but the stereotypical native american voice actor in canada just blew it. it was mildly offensive and I'm not even native american. then there were all the people in game saying "dude you just need to get to LV 25 after that the game is a cakewalk, you don't really need to be higher than that."

and they were right.

Soooooo, I logged in a few half years back to show it to the GF after CoX shut down, she was mildly amused then didn't want to play. Mostly because figuring out HOW to DO anything on an actual mission list is Difficult if you are new.

Also Thanks Agge for the blabber cleanup. I really was out of line bringing outside topics into a Superhero game forum.

The graphics and animations in CO also had some rather obvious points I didn't like, when I first played it, it was stuck in a rendering mode which made everything pixelated... then I learned to switch that off but still it had ruined a good deal of the game for me. The animations, especially running and flying seemed a little 'off'.

And then there was the background sounds in the main city section, they messed up on the 'people talking in the background' sound effect, it has almost legible speech on a loop and in an annoying voice tone none the less..

not too thrilled with it, even after playing it for a few hours now, I feel like I have nothing to do. there are no real task forces, just shotty events.

not to offend anyone, I respect people who like it but I just don't, and these are my reasons.

I've actually played through all the content in it, or nearly all of it, most of it I soloed. just seems like a graphical lame duck super hero game.

There is always another way. But it might not work exactly like you may desire.

A wise old rabbit once told me "Never give-up!, Trust your instincts!" granted the advice at the time led me on a tripped-out voyage out of an asteroid belt, but hey it was more impressive than a bunch of rocks and space monkies.

I really like the perspective in this photo; makes it look like Jack and Eochai are normal sized people in front of a lovely garden of horrors they cultivate behind their house.

I feel it's easy the moment you have any form of self-healing in the game, but it's also due to, I think enemy damage doesn't scale very well past level 30 or so, as I couldn't help but notice the enemy damage drops drastically in the 30+ range, except for viper.  And they nerfed viper, course.  Then buffed players a ton after they'd already nerfed the enemy attack rates when for a while they were doing enough damage to actually be a threat.  But instead of listening to anyone smart they listened to the players who were playing gimped toons back then.  Which resulted in a lack of incentive to fix the weaker powers, to.

Some of these pictures taken really bring me back and make me smile, because of just how awesome those places were.  I am always left thinking "Where is the water in CO?".  City of heroes may not have had aquatic mechanics in it, but at least they made good use of the area they had paragon city take place, and the water around Rhode Island.  It felt like a coastal city, which I liked alot.  No water = blandness to me.

And many of the areas not specifically in Paragon city also had water everywhere.  The game just, had a good variety to it's areas, even the main zones.  And seeing the zone above...man what is the name of that place again, I need to check it out in icon sometime.

I played CO for the first three months it was live, and came back to CoH.  I never regretted that decision, and after CoH went away, I played SWTOR until very recently.  Even with the new end-game content, I just really was not enjoying it anymore.  I considered CO, but got the impression that not much had REALLY changed since I left, so I went with DCUO.  Not really having that much fun there, but for now it is something new.

I just keep hoping CoH makes a comeback before I have to spend too much time in DCUO, as the combat/movement system is SO different, that I am afraid I will get used to it, and then CoH will feel strange!
What was no more, is now reborn!
