seriously consider a positional softcap (Melee/ranged/AoE). You need to do all three to reap the benefits,

At some point i stopped bothering with AOE defense bonuses and never noticed the difference.

Let's not forget that, first and foremost, it's Star Wars!  That is primarily what has kept me playing for three years.  However, lately even that is not enough.  If CoH were to come back tomorrow, goodbye SWTOR, hello Paragon City!
I stopped playing when my guild split up. Most of us were playing city of heroes together for awhile but after we joined the 3rd or so guild people stopped logging in and I called it quits. I just didn't want to bother anymore with finding a group for it to fall apart right when im having fun with them.

Some of us eventually met in Wildstar but when my computer died I lost my ventrillo information for that group and I haven't been able to catch them online since.

I have 24 55+ toons in swtor. I have cancelled my account there and wont be back unless there are major changes in the leadership there
i dropped my sub two months ago and haven't played since partially due to the restrictions on free accounts. The other part was that i'd gotten so tired of the gameplay and limited roles available. So, i'll bite; what happened in the last couple of months?

(Really hoping CoH comes back simply because i have yet to find any game that supports the variety of playstyles, character concepts, and customization that CoH supplied. Sure, the successor projects have potential, but they're years out from being complete; CoH could be back in a handful or two of months if the deal goes through.)
So far so good. Onward and upward!

I stopped after that latest patch where they did away with hybrid builds

Full softcap is worlds away from "some defense". Like, the last 5% of defense improves your survivability by literally as much as the first 40%. Either plan to be at the soft cap, with or without inspirations/temps/external buffs, or don't really bother with adding defense becaue it's not going to do much.

I disagree with this statement. I have toons below the softcap.. Hovering around 35% and it improves survival without a doubt. As much as being at the softcap.. NO.. ( and I have plenty of toons at the softcap as well)

10%-20% is barely noticeable in my experience..

I have found that around 32% defense I start to notice defense against minions..

But between having 35% and Zero.. Ill take the 35 % every time..

Oh, geez, this.  I've yet to find another game where a single class could be played in literally millions of different ways thanks to powerset combinations.  Where the class that summons demons and the class that summons animals are the same class, and those were only two out of seven different types of pets that could be summoned (along with eleven different types of support abilities that could be chosen, making for very different combinations).

Just try explaining to a typical WoW player that the demon-summoning class and the wolf-summoning class are the same class, and that same class can also summon undead, robots, or one of several different types of human servants.  (Though it's unfair of me to single out WoW; most games that have both demon and animal summoning have them as distinct classes)

... basically, I miss my Masterminds most of all.  I wanted to get my Thugs/Traps to 50. :(

they cant fix major bugs in ops but seem to have no problem making new cartel market garbage. they waited 7..yes 7 weeks to fix an exploit in an op that they new about before it went live, and then acted all butthurt that people used it. they released a slotmachine that dropped tokens to be used to trade for high grade mats. lots of people were getting into crafting and getting excited about it. they even came out and made an official statement that it was working as intended. they said they might adjust the drop rate of 1 thing on it. then they nuked it into the dirt...as in extreme overkill nuke. adding a crappy reskinned mount that drops on a .0001% chance does not make it useful. people dropped a lot of real $$$ to get that item. biowart has refused to make an official statement about it, they mentioned something at a cantina tour off hand but that is questionable.

while on that note, did anyone go to any of the coh meet and greets? they were a blast.

I went to all the PAX meetups here in Seattle. That dinky little tavern can die in a fire. Cannot understand why they chose - TWICE - to hold it there after the horrible player response the first time.

I think explaining that all types of pet are variations on a single "pet class" would be doable. It's the bit where a group of "support class" characters will almost always out-damage a group of "damage class" characters that will make their head spin.

UPDATE March 4 2015:

Talks are ongoing. There is almost definitely an NDA in place (which means we can't even officially confirm there's an NDA).

I wish they could confirm if there was one. The presence of an NDA would be a fantastic sign...

I almost want to say this is probably the best sign we've got, if there's an NDA in place.  News enough for me for now that things are probably going forwards.  To what end is anyone's guess.

I know it is standard business practice to have an NDA in place for these kinds of things, and I certainly don't expect anyone to violate it, just to placate our desire for information.  I just think it is particularly noteworthy that this scenario sets up the most painful situation for the faithful imaginable.  First, there is hope given by starting the process of negotiation and making it known.  Then we as a group supposition a timeline for completion in our minds (that was probably unrealistic to begin with), about when we would have our beloved game back.  When that did not happen, and the news dries up completely, that hope begins to slowly drain away.

I am not complaining, so much as noting that from a psychological perspective, you can't get too much more demoralizing than that. We have now kind of gone through all the stages of grief here to finally arrive at acceptance.  I know the crew negotiating their hearts out on our behalf are aware of all of this, and l am sure wish they could do something about it.  They want us playing the game as much as we want to be playing it, but as long as money, and reputation is at stake, this will go only as fast as the business situation allows, and we just have to find a way to hang in there long enough to see it happen.

I for one will be doing just that.

At some point i stopped bothering with AOE defense bonuses and never noticed the difference.

With many characters, I didn't consider melee defense as very important. Controllers, for example, would generally not be in melee range unless they had some PBAoE control or major debuff power, so if they were in melee with a spawn it was usually because they were controlling it or debuffing its attacks. So for them, I'd max out Ranged, get a good amount of AoE, and shrug at the melee defense.

NDA in place.  Pretty much 'confirmed' already.

I'll take that as a good sign... ;)

It's an old game now.  It has value to Coh fans.  Be nice to get issue 23 back.  I'd play the game in a 'zombie' state for another 10+ years.

Hopefully we'll hear of a deal struck by June.

Allegedly when the current group went for the IP it was NC Soft that said what about CoH Issue 23, want that too?

And, of COURSE I do.

That.  And the right to port it to Unreal.  Be real nice.

We'll see what the future brings.  I'm optimistic.

Azrael.

Yeah i'd usually go softcapped or a luck away ranged on my fendurs, corrs and trollers. All my doms were permadom so it hardly mattered on them but i'd throw in some ranged if i had the slots.

After 8 months of negotiations, I beginning to suspect more incompetence rather than professionalism in this deal.  This is taking ridiculously long now.  I'm sorry, but no. Business just does NOT take this long for something as simple as an obsolete IP sale.

Hell, the entire company I work for was sold to an Irish firm in far less time that this deal is taking, and that was an international, multi-million euro deal involving the sale of a large software development studio, including many patents.
