Are we ignoring the fact that there is still a slight possibility that we might not have to start over?  I'd love to keep my characters too, but as other people have said already, I just want to play the game. Starting over again or as it was 2 years ago, I don't care.  I just want to climb Atlas with some friends again.

Cool, you're upset you're losing your characters. Join the club.

Be grateful. If the fact you have to start over like everyone else irks you so much, to the point of not wanting to play the game anymore, go away. We don't care.
I quite concur.

Not ignoring i think, but it's such a slight possibility, all things considered, that at this point i would consider a bit unreasonable to really expect it. While i would love to get my characters back it seems pretty unlikely considering what NCsoft has offered so far.
So far so good. Onward and upward!

Okay, could we please not get into the "shut up"/"go away" kind of thing again? For months, we've been wondering whether or not character data would be brought back, and even arguing over whether or not it should (as if we'd influence the outcome). Well, now we know that it won't; we now have to accept that, and adjust our plans accordingly. Abandon the conjecture and the discord, and drive on. Getting at each others' throats again would be pointless.

Kindly do not tell people to go away for missing the progress they'd achieved in CoH before shutdown.  That seems entirely unnecessary and mean-spirited.

I agree - though I do understand the intended sentiment.

It isn't really that anyone wants anyone to leave, it's that right now it isn't a productive or helpful thing when nothing is written in ink, much less stone, and as it is we're all mourning what we've lost, or accepted what we've lost, etc.

Right now none of us have anything. It isn't helpful to say there's no point in the game if we can't get anything back - but I think we can all agree commiserating over the loss of characters, builds, SG bases... that's something we may need to do.

A lot of put months, years, and so much emotional energy into the game. The things in that game came to embody so much for us. It sucks to lose those things... and I will be the first to say I'm sad that the GAH (my old supergroup) lost it's SG base, that I'll need to put in a lot of work to get anything with a build going... but while I can look at those things as opportunities to grow and recreate these things even better than before, I don't want to force anyone to feel that way too.

Let's be respectful of all viewpoints during this process. Maybe we should make a thread to discuss the feelings associated with loss of character data? It feels somewhat removed from the rebirth efforts specifically, especially since they may yet yield that fruit. We do not know what the deal will entail until it is signed.

This also just in:  Half a loaf is better than none.

THIS!!!

I will miss my IOed-out 50s too. We all will. But you know what? My alts are not mere collections of pixels and data, they are in my heart and in my brain. Just waiting for a chance to remanifest....

One thing I wonder about, would a sale without the existing customer data get us what we want FASTER? Would you wait another 6-12 months if you could keep your characters? What if a data wipe meant the game would cost a lot less? That is a really hard question for me. I'm kind of not wanting to wait - I have gotten to 50 so many times, I know it would not be hard to do again. Yet, all those millions and millions and millions-worth of IOs.... argh...

I'll never quite fully understand the (Frankly) stupid mindset of "No characters? This game is gonna suck then!"

Yeah, sure the characters will be missed and all, but the audacity of going "THIS SUCKS! THIS GAME ISN'T WORTH MY TIME" is just laughable. As opposed to what? Not having the character at all. You know, because the game won't be online

It's not like it takes just a week of try-harding to reach 50, or anything like that.

At one time during the first iteration of the game there weren't any level 50s.  I think it was pre-issue 1.

Prior to that, it was a while before any L40s were in the game.

And (gasp) there weren't any Villains for over a year.

Yet somehow, City of Heroes/Villains survived.  And people actually played it.

I bet different people found different ways to get to L40, then L50.

Wacky.

I never said anything like that.  No need to be rude.

Not getting something you wanted is normal here.   Every single one of us is grateful for Icon yet we want more....we want the game back.  Why aren't you just grateful for Icon?

I quite concur.
The "clean slate" people are easily the most rude on this forum.  Nothing but attacks for people who express the desire to get their characters back.    A person can say "I hope we start over from nothing" over and over and that's never "We get it...no need to keep saying it".

Nice double standard.

Seconded. Also seconding Kistulot's thoughts. Like Downix has said before, the deal is not set in stone. Neither are the terms. We don't know for sure what we will and will not have until ink has been spilled. NCSoft may yet just decide not to let us have City of Heroes at all.

Even though at this point I'll be happy to be back in the City again no matter what, I do sympathize with the people who are upset at the prospect of a blank slate. I spent hours with my stable of characters, too. So ... Let's not tear each other's throats out over this.

I haven't seen "I hope we all start over from nothing" so much as "I'd like to have my stuff but I won't hold my breath" or "If we all can't get our stuff back then we should all start over" or "It'd be interesting to see the dynamics if we all have to start over."

In other words, some people are more willing to accept that they may have to start over than others.  And the most vocal people in the latter category are easily interpreted as whiners.

HEATSTROKE

Im tired of the "no data" back and forth.. maybe some people not having their character data affects them more than it affects you.. but the reality is that there may be no choice whatsoever in the matter..

No, what we are saying (do try to actually listen), is that, yes, we'd love to have our characters (and loot) back as well.  But if that's not on the table, getting the game without them is better than not getting the game back at all.

Don't worry too much, Kistulot! I'll offer my services once again to make the GAH base as awesome as it ever was. As, I'm sure, will the other builders we had. ;)

Hey Psi! Good to see you around! :D

Oh I firmly believe it'll be rebuilt... but that doesn't mean a part of me isn't sad that the data isn't likely to rematerialize. I spent (entirely too many) hours with Argent sitting in the YGA lounge. Investment, ya know? :)

for myself I am not upset about losing my gen 1 characters because, through them I learned a lot that I can use when I make my gen 2 characters. :) To me I just want to play and apply what I learned to play as blasters and trollers, plus it will be easier to make inf.

Oh yeah.

It's hard to lose the things we had, but the chance to rebuild is a welcome alternative to what we have now, in my humble opinion.

Power Gamer

Although the character data and source code are not part of the current deal, it is possible that could change.

I suspect the reason that character/account data will not be available has to do with the migration of accounts to other NCSoft games. If you played CoX until the end but maintained your account and play another NCSoft game, handing over account data would be a violation a bunch of lawyerly language. It would be a nightmare no company wants.

Yet I wonder if it were possible to verify your account info, including character data with NCSoft and then they could confirm your purchases to the new company. Then pii would be protected, character data restored, both companies getting kudos for caring about the loyal player and the interwebs would flow with apple blossoms and fairy dust.

Just because it is not on the table now, doesn't mean it won't be later.
It takes a village to raise a child. And it takes a villain to explain the value of lunch money.

Okay folks, be nice.  Don't make me summon Agge, she's tired and cranky from four days of PAX.  You know it won't go well if she has to get out her modhammer.
