Harpo, Devil, FFM, please just stop it already. Okay? Please?

Take the argument elsewhere. It is abundantly clear that NONE of you are going to let this go. And I know I'm not a mod, but Gods almighty I am really getting tired of this.

Very curious what it's ok to hope all the players don't get their characters back.

...And the instant someone calls that selfish hope what it is, then it's time to stop talking about it?

I'm actually not going to stop taking it personally when people hope I don't get my characters back.  Sorry.   :P

This idea that because a person does not realize they are hoping for something negative for me that excuses them is not logical.  It becomes personal to me the instant it effects me.

I see no harm in clarifying exactly what he is hoping for and how that would harm me.  It is a very selfish hope.   And he is not the only one.

Until it was made abundantly clear that this wasn't the intention at all.  Hence, you're complaining for the sake of complaining.
Reminder: No game = No data, no characters...nothing.  However, no data/characters != No game.

I think a true gimp would leave all slots empty.
i think a more truly gimped build would pick a set with lots of knockback and slot for nothing but knockback. A pity there weren't more powers with toggled self-debuffs like the classic Group Fly.  ;)

At this point nothing has changed and due to the nature of the deal - it will take a while to finish. NCSoft does not at this point - appear to have the original source code. Other data like that for users is a maybe. What it appears they have - at this point - is a disk image of the final issue 24. NCSoft also does not appear to have any documentation or development tools - at this point.

None of these issues is a deal killer and in fact helps reduce the price as work will have to be done to be able to get the game running again.

Folks like Codewalker, Downix or Arcana may be able to explain what would be needed to reverse engineer this into a working game. I know Downix said he was thinking it might take 6-12 months to get this going - at this point.

I keep saying - at this point because it could change, NCSoft may find more or another source may have something they were sitting on. The team has said in messages that this could be an ongoing things where NCSoft finds more stuff as time passes. Obviously all of these things affect the price and conditions of sale. If suddenly NCSoft hits the jackpot and finds everything - a year from now - what happens? This is not an easy deal and just remember - this game was not shutdown with the intention of selling it later. It was in storage. I really think if we could have hindsight of what we know now a deal could have been done far earlier and not trying to find a 2 year old closed games backup data.

For your own sanity just hang in there as it is very likely the next real movement will be a yes or no - or possibly both. In a deal like this NCSoft may go the way of Cryptic/NCSoft sale and ask for a 2 year deal or some other condition. That is what both sides are working out now. It will take a while to work through each step. Just remember it is easier for NCSoft to do nothing, they are showing respect for our community for even bothering to make a deal. It has been a while since a serious offer was made on the game. I believe it was completely off the NCSoft radar.

I will monitor this thread and chip in when possible - but it is going to take a while at this stage for anything to happen. I do know if NCSoft was going to try and republish CoH - it would not be easy and they would have to spend time and money to get it going as well. In spite of people thinking - it is simple just turn it on! The servers will have been wiped and reused long ago. All that is left is backups. Try not to drive yourself crazy and enjoy the ride, something like this is not completely new but I do believe it will send ripples all over the gaming world.

Oh, we talked about that already. They aren't worried about that stuff - yet. They are very intent on getting the game first everything else can be worked out. You have already seen Downix and Samuraiko say they used to do those exact jobs unwinding the reverse engineering and making documents. I have had other folks volunteer to work for free and some looking for jobs. I think there will be no lack of folks who want to help.

Someone, somewhere has the code. I don't know this for a proven fact but I find it very hard to believe someone doesn't have it. In the days of $15 - 32gb flash drives, someone has it or at least enough of the tools and stuff to unwind it.
When the game shut down 32gb flash drives were usually still a bit more than $15, but i agree with your general point. i would be really surprised if there weren't copies of the dev tools and some of the source code floating around somewhere among the former devs even if some of it might be from much older versions of the game. Possible legal issues with acquiring it aside.
As far as not providing the source and tools being a strategic move to delay competition it seems possible that a clause where NCsoft gets a share of the profits for a time would be a reasonably effective incentive to suddenly "discover" the missing code and tools. "We completely forgot to check the warehouse's inventory database when we were looking for the code. What a silly error. It's so lucky that it suddenly occurred to us to look there after we agreed to get a share of the revenues."
So far so good. Onward and upward!

Here's a helpful discussion you might want to take part in. This is exactly where people can voice their opinion of what they'd like to see if they get no user data (and even voice that they'd much prefer to get their user data!)...

It doesn't take too much effort to cap defense on a team. This whole thing came about from a debate of should you tell someone they are doing it "wrong" or should you say nothing? As we see here just from some of the discussions here some folks would take serious offense if someone were to say "you goofed up your emp defender" while others would say "as a friend, I would expect my friend to tell me when I am messing up".

I prefer solid teams and generally I want people contributing.  If I feel someones not doing anything whatsoever why would I want them on my team?  At least your friend uses his attacks, 90% bad empaths didn't attack, didn't buff, only occasionally used the RA's but never used fort.  If a team was alive it was everyone else on the team, not the attackless buffless empath :).  Not being a stop having fun guy here, make no mistake if I was doing that i'd be mad at anyone not playing the absolute perfect best build.  The only playstyle I really have anything against is people ignoring everything but healing as support players.  Or those who only take such players but then again I avoided such teams like the plague.
Currently; Not doing any streaming, found myself with less time available recently.  Still playing starbound periodically, though I am thinking of trying other games.  Don't tell me to play mmohtg's though please :).  Getting back into participating in VO and the successors again to.

Reading a few post and felt I should throw my 2 cents in. I would love to play my main had well over a 1000 hours with him. However with that said if I had to start over at lvl 1 I would take that chance if that meant I could play my favorite game.

Exactly why I don't like playing defenders. Everybody else has ideas about how it should be done. Demands for SB, Why don't you do this or do that? They don't want to play one but are happy to tell you how to do it.

As did i, but when soloing and doing minimal damage having the enemies you actually do hit go flying out of reach isn't as useful. Hell, for a really gimped character just use nothing but Force Bolt slotted for knockback to fight. i loved force Bolt for its utility, but as an attack if you're trying to defeat something...

Myself, I am a total power guy. If we ran an ITF in 18 minutes, I want to try for 17.

Generally speaking, Good player with so-so build >>> Bad Player with "perfect build" just my .02 inf.

When we did play on the team with the emp blaster defender I ran my dark/dark defender so he could just blast. Yes, I have an even better emp defender story, another player I knew while he had all of the emp powers, he didn't use them and thought his emp was a tank and would run into the fight first and die. There was a reason the rest of us had vengeance. Note: he didn't or any other leadership powers.

I said "technically, those activities could be defined as end-game."

I did them after 50, you did them before. It's still min-maxing, and the fact still stands that that activity could be defined as end-game.

Question though:

If you spent so much time coming up with the build and having back-and-forth discussions on the forums for the build for the character, why not actually play it when you've finally completed what you worked so hard at planning?

Just curious...

Well, technically a horse could be defined as a rocking chair, but I won't quibble, grin.

In answer to your question, the payoff for me isn't having a level 50 completed character. Once the character is done, I feel that I am also done with it. That's why I almost never pursue purples - you can't slot them until 50, and by that time, I'm finished with the character.

For me the journey is the character more and more coming into his own, as he gets more powers, more slots, completes IO sets, etc. But once they can't get much more power I want to start anew with a new mechanical idea. Sure, I could grind Hamidon, or grind Incarnate Trials, but compared to the 1-50 journey the post-50 journey is a slow crawl through broken glas - which would be worth it if the amount of power you'ld gain was cosmic, but I never felt the Incarnate powers were all that compelling to get. I did a few, and they were fun, but I didn't suddenly feel like I hit a whole new level of power. Kinda meh.

So that's why I shelve characters at 50 - because IMO they don't change much more, and it's a nice place to call closure and take a new journey. And the thing is, CoX is pretty much the only MMO in which I could level well over two dozen characters, and have each journey feel unique. CoX was massively successfully massively serial, IMO.

i did it not because it was a particularly useful heal (it usually wasn't) but because it allowed me to truthfully say that i had a healing arrow power.
Then again i mostly played Defenders and Controllers and if someone started whining that the team needed a healer i would offer to switch to my DM/Regen Scrapper. "i heal enormous amounts of damage, probably more than any other character i have."

Aye, I usually played corruptors and defenders myself.  As I said, I'm not that picky on styles of play, just don't like people pidgin holing themselves to only healing on support toons.  If I was only going to do damage on a corr/defender most the time I'd just play a blaster if I wasn't buffing anyone, debuffing mobs or soft ccing things.  Most the time, anyhow, depends on the strategy of the powerset combination.

Ironwolf, et al, for what it's worth:

While I would love to have characters back and stuff - if only for the Inf on them - I am FAR more concerned with the ability to leverage the game adjacent stuff that makes life easier/better/more fun.  By this I mean:

* Veteran Awards! I had almost all of the them, and especially the Sands of Mu and the Nemmy Staff and Blackwand helped my pre-level-10 characters fill out sparse attack chains. All the free respecs were great too. The Prestige dashes were nice. Assemble the Team.
* The Paragon Store! Especially the Boosts of all kinds. And the super long lasting Inspirations.
* The fact that if you had enough Inf, you could almost always find even rare stuff on the market to buy. I am very concerned that supply being so limited upon the relaunch, how will I be able to snag 5 Luck of the Gamblers off the market reliably? Or a full Decimation set? Karma? Kismet? A low level +Stealth IO?

To me, getting back my character is no concern, compared to getting back my play experience. I would be thrilled to roll a new level 1 character - if I new I still had access to my Vet Awards, the Paragon Store, and a fully stocked market! :)

I had a SR/DB tanker near the end and i liked it a lot. I can't quote the numbers but for sheer 'you can't hit me' fun, it was great :) Of course, sometimes a hit would get through but you avoided a lot of the debuffs that could normally cause annoyance and you could enjoy running circles around sappers etc.
I had a claws/sr scrapper that I loved.  I used to read complaints about sappers and carnies and such and I didn't understand the issue until I leveled my peacebringer.  I loved not getting hit and not having to worry about all those effects.

Granted this was on a scrapper, but between the SR and the knockdown/back of focus, shockwave, energy torrent, and elude, my character only got hit when I allowed it.  If/when the game comes back.  If I have to remake my characters I may remake my sr scrapper as a tank (maybe a brute).  But I'm also planning on making 2 more sr's one will definitely be a scrapper, the other may be a stalker.  Or I may just make 3 scrappers.  :)
