Once had someone hit on my female character as well. Turned out it was another girl. Then she asked if I were gay.  :P

Me: No, I just like looking at a ladies behind.

I've been asked why male players would run female characters. In CoH, I found that some power sets just seemed to work better on a female character. My first MA scrapper was male. I ran him for a while, but he just didn't click with me, so I deleted him. A few weeks later, I had a bio idea for a female MA scrapper, so I made one. Watching her do the exact same moves was like watching her dance. It just worked better.

And sometimes, I get concept ideas that have to be female: AuntieMatter (energy/energy blaster), AuntieFreeze (ice/icy dom) and AuntieGravity (grav/energy dom) leap to mind (those are blamed on my love of wordplay and puns).

Most of the people i played with were the sort who would always try to bring along a couple heroes who really needed to respec; usually some of the random people shouting for help with doing it.
That was exactly my problem.  My first toon...was not built well at all.   bleh...who knew I shouldn't slot rest and sprint?   ;D    I found out what enhancements were for about lvl 22 as well.  (Yeah...I had no clue what slots were for and just threw them into random powers)
Quotei would spend my time between waves seeing how many Trip Mines, Acid Mortars, and Poison Traps i could surround the core with and then watch the glorious carnage as mobs would charge into the traps. The Sky Raiders respec was one of the funniest because Porters would teleport in next to the core and go cartwheeling away in a massive explosion as mortars went *PHOONT* and clouds of gas erupted all around the core. Those were fun times.  ;D
That sounds awesome!   I gotta try that!

LOL

Mostly Men Online Role Playing Girls. Not really true anymore, CoH probably had the most gurl gamers of any MMO I played.

No doubt. That says a lot about the appeal of the game!
I am an ass, but don't we all love a good ass!

Mageman

I remember when CoH was first in beta - they were talking like they didn't want specific character types (Tanker, Scrapper, Blaster, etc.). They just wanted the powers and you would choose a Primary and a Secondary, with no other restrictions. Now, since they have given inherent powers (like the Tank's taunt power), that would add another power to choose from. However, I think in Beta they discovered that people were creating the "Tank Mage" (a defense power with blast power), so they changed it.

That being said, I really liked the MM (Bots/Dark was my favorite, but was getting into Bots/Storm). I really wish for (and would pay to get) /Kinetics as a secondary for the MM. The biggest drawback from playing a MM is that on a team, you didn't seem to have a lot to offer. But solo (PvE), you were close to unstoppable. /Kin would knock the MM into the stratosphere - increasing your power solo and while teaming! I can see why they didn't release this. This doesn't stop me from wanting it though!

Anyways, I wish someone would go through an prune this thread to remove all the BS posts with nothing to do with CoX. I think that this thread is up to almost 20 pages per day. Way too many and way too hard to read each one (I try to skim, but I'm afraid I will miss something important).
My Reality:
#1 I love my wife!
#2 I miss CoX!
#3 Refer to rule #1!
#4 I seem to have an itch!

I had Miss Anne Thrope as a dark/dark fender, but sadly never got her more than Level 10.

People are excited. They have no outlet except to post here and hang out with people who are also just as excited.

Your post was fine - it is just the waiting gets us all on edge. Some people deal with anxiety in different ways - they get angry, giddy, go quiet, get defensive or any gamut of human emotions. Just don't take it personal and understand this is just people being excited to get the game back.

Excited?  Me?  Just because I check the forums about six times a day and hit refresh every ten minutes?

maybe a little...   ;D

I got negative responses for "gender bending" but really, of all the things to worry about in game, why worry that the player doesn't match the sex of the avatar? I'm more concerned about, can this person team well. After that, being good conversation is just a bonus. After awhile, you don't even think about it, you know them by their global or most used character.

I'll never understand the logic behind that question. I mean, its like asking why a normal human would play a yellow sliced pie looking thing that eats dots, or a muscle bound gun toting super-soldier, or a squad of pig-hating angry birds armed with giant slingshots. Its not like people expect you to actually be an Italian plumber to play Mario, or to resemble Link to play Legend of Zelda.

Character selection never requires deeper meaning then "It seemed cool at the time."

Once I started using vent a lot more I was initially surprised by how many CO and WoW players were female: Until then I had sort of bought into the legend of it being mostly guys playing female chars.
Guns don't kill people, meerkats do.

Parabot

You know, I hope they can get the user data for one reason. I don't need to get all my characters back, I'm fine playing them all from level 1 to 50 all over again. In fact, it seems like an exciting prospect. I just want all my veteran's rewards back. I don't really want to wait years to accumulate all the rewards I had previously. Of course, even if I have to start from the very beginning, I'm there. With bells on.

As far as CoH2 goes, I want the basic mechanics to stay the same. That's not to say I wouldn't welcome SOME updating of powersets, but the rule of thumb should be "Does it still PLAY like CoH?". That being said, maybe it would be kind of cool to see some of later mechanics integrated into some of the earlier powersets to set them apart from each other a little. Let's face it, the mace and axe sets were almost exactly the same. The same could be said of some of the blast sets as well. I wouldn't mind some changes that gave them some flavor.

Having a gender-ambiguous first-name IRL, it barely makes me blink when people assume I'm not male in any virtual context.

After a while, I stopped making male characters other than when my wife and I had a "couple" concept we wanted to play.  To be honest, I just found the female avatars more interesting, and with more varied costume bits.

...and I got tired of staring at dude-butt...

I had I think three female characters out of my entire stable.  I had several reasons for having them.  They fit with a concept.  (I'd mention names, but I'm saving them for the relaunch.  All three only worked for a female.)  "If I have to stare at a butt the whole time it may as well be an attractive one."  I got to dress them interestingly.  (Yes, I am a perv.  You might note that for future reference.  Whats your point?)  I also found that when I teamed with them I was treated less harshly.

I think I'm gonna go back and rewatch all my CoH vids so I can get my head in the right space for making new vids once we get the game back. Also gonna watch all of Aralcox's vids since NOW I can do most of what he did! (And I have the high-rez versions of all his stuff, thanks Aral!) :D

I generally played male. I would play a female character if the concept seemed right. Madame Mardi Gras was a black woman from the Treme in New Orleans. I am none of those things but it worked with the idea of Magic and Time control. She was just trying to save her family from Katrina, but time travel only made it worse.

Personally, I have never understood hitting on other people of either sex in a video game. When I want to date someone I try and find someone I could conceivably meet in real life. CoH is where I feel like a hero (occasionally a villain) not where I'm trying to get a hook up.

But, meh, if that is you bag, just take "no" and "piss-off" as answer. Be respectful of others and let them play as they like. We will all be happier that way!

Lol, This thread just about has a monitor dedicated to it. Refreshing and reading while I work on Revival. xD

"Does it still play like CoH?" is a great question that any CoH-project dev should probably ask themselves while working.
Whenever adding NEW content, or systems...I think the two most important questions that should be asked are "Does it feel CoH-y, does it fit with the established content?" and "Is it FUN?". If the answer to those questions is anything but yes, then you need to go back to the drawing board.

So true. Most of the people I knew in game, and that knew I was male, never gave it a second thought. I'd say my characters were about 50/50. I always went for what felt like for concept. And yes, the female form>male.
I am an ass, but don't we all love a good ass!

As far as mechanics go... I think it's key to look at the evolution of power sets in CoH. If you look at the later power sets, they had some pretty different mechanics from the beginning of the game. Dual Pistols had ammo, Water Blast had "tidal power", Dual Blades had combos... these are innovative things that went beyond the normal feel of power sets, which was basically "a bunch of powers that do damage." Building up momentum in a Titan Weapon is completely different from hacking away at a guy with a Battle Axe. So when people are dead set against changing the gameplay style or mechanics of CoH, I have to wonder if they like sets like Dual Blades or Staff Fighting, which were so different from "standard" power sets. And even if you do like the cool new sets, saying that any change to gameplay is terrible would limit more innovative sets like them being created.

To be honest, I liked the older power sets better.  I don't like having to do powers in a particular sequence to get max benefit or having to build up power to enable a power.     I have no problem with them trying new mechanics with new power sets, but hopefully they'll also add a few new sets that are done the 'old' way.  I tried Dual Blades, Staff Fighting,  and Water Blast - all of them just left me feeling "meh".
