You may not be, but your reply was to Codewalker - who is talking about the complexity involved with making it a single player experience - and how that related to the game & the servers & whatnot.

Then just the client? We have that already, so i guess you're all set and don't need anything else.
(Everything else was several interconnected databases/servers that you don't want to talk about or would have to be coded entirely from scratch if you wanted a single player version without using them. So, find a couple programmers and hire them full time for a year or two to recreate the game as a single player version. Easy-peasy.)

Is it really so difficult to distinguish between someone talking about the possibility of a solo version of the game and someone talking about what content was able to be soloed when the game was live? Just because the former was the original context in which the latter was mentioned doesn't make the distinction go away. Tyger only talked about what content could be soloed when the game was live after someone else asked about making a solo emu.

Sorry, I must be missing something...

Talking about playing the game solo during a conversation about making a single player version of the game means what exactly??

How hard would it be to make CoH a solo experience since it doesn't look like they are going to sell?  Have it play one your computer with no server.  If that makes sense.  I would rather have an mmo but if it means never playing it again I would go for solo in a heart beat.

If this is a silly question for computer and server peeps I'm sorry.  I'm not a computer guy ;).

O.P stated they were not very clued in on what was possible and asked for some clarification - simply stating "go play solo", is far from a real answer to a fairly? specific question...

It still means talking about playing the game solo. Context doesn't determine content. Tyger simply said something about having been able to play most of the game solo in response to the OP you cited about the possibility of solo emulator, then got tongue-lashed (or key-lashed I suppose) as if s/he'd said something like 'solo emulators are possible and easier than full and could be programmed by a child on a Speak-and-Spell so why don't we have them now, waaaaaa.'

Suppose we're having a conversation about making pizza. I say I liked the way they made it at a place that closed down years ago. Would it make sense to grouse at me as if I'd said that someone should make me some pizza according to that place's recipe?

No, in context it would more akin to you telling me you liked the way a certain place made pizza, then someone else told the story of meeting the restaurateur and the history of the recipe and then I said "they make pizza" - it adds nothing to the conversation.

How ironic that Tyger didn't "need" the workings of the game explained - which, incidentally, I actually took exception to the tone of myself - because similarly the OP didn't need to be told CoH could be played solo, what he needed was clarification as to whether making CoH an offline game would be possible and/or easier than a full emulation of the MMO.

I did try to explain what I believe to be the issue - Tyger seems (or seemed to be), unaware of what was asked in the first instance - hence the confusion all round...

the question of whether it did or should have added something to the conversation is a different issue. I just don't like seeing people get jumped on for innocuous comments, or at least if they are I'd prefer it be for what they actually said.

But anyways, dropping it now.

Tyger only talked about what content could be soloed when the game was live after someone else asked about making a solo emu.

The way I see it, there are certain posters here not simply suggesting a standalone CoH game is possible and easy to make, but instead asserting that as an absolute fact - and then considering any reasoning to the contrary to be off-topic and not contributing to the discussion.

So I'll follow that rule, and tell you two ways that a standalone CoH client can be made:

1) You'd have to write a separate game server application that runs on the local machine, but only supports one player connection, and can fool the stock CoH client into connecting to it and accepting commands.  It would have to contain duplicates of a lot of the content from the CoH client so it knows what the client knows, in order to command the game so it behaves like it should.

2)  You'd have to re-write the CoH game client in a new game engine, and import and re-use or adapt all of the textures, sounds, objects, scripts, and design it so it no longer requires a server.

Sticking to the same rule, I'll let you judge for yourselves how difficult or easy those would be.  It's not easy for *me*.  Maybe it is for someone out there.

Oh dear...

A question was posed about the possibility of an offline CoH - Codewalker explained why it was no easier than just rebuilding CoH as it was.

Still following?

Tyger then added that CoH could be played solo anyway - that statement was misinterpreted by a third party - who again explained how servers interacted with the CoH client...

Tyger rightly defended his/her statement - to which I tried to give an explanation of the confusion - which in turn lead to greater confusion until I more fully explained what I had understood had happened...

Then you posted.

In summary, noone thinks offline CoH is easy - someone simply asked if it could be done - Codewalker explained why it most likely wouldn't happen.

Oh I missed some juicy parts!  Anyway, I am with you Vee, I don't see why its so difficult to see Tyger was talking about something unrelated and was merely just commenting on the content of the game not the plausibility of it happening.   I can also see why people can't, or won't, take the mental leap there without first going through the "Its not possible check"

If you asked Tyger42 "Is it possible to play the game in Stand Alone mode" I would assume the answer would be "No" but if you asked Tyger the question "If we could would there be enough solo content to keep us satisfied" the answer would be Yes.  And that honestly seems to be the distinction here that is being overlooked.  I rather liked the Pizza reference, but I would be remiss to say that I don't get why people keep feeling the need to say "Ya but that's not possible" I just think Tyger doesn't need to keep being reminded how difficult it is, if a specialist says something is hard, in this case CodeWalker, then most of us are inclined to believe it.  But that doesn't change the fact that CoH DID have a ton of solo Content, whether its accessible or not.

I turn my back for a couple days, and this happens.
Wait until The THeM hears about this, they will be speechless.
