If they were still up.. id still be talking on them..

I posted something here, for those folks who haven't figured out how to navigate the archived version: http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,9924.msg143460.html#msg143460

For now, Titan forums is the perfect spot to continue, re-start or re-invigorate any such discussions, but this one thread seems to be where people are posting everything. So... I would respectfully suggest that anyone who wants to discuss anything, please find an appropriate topic HERE and go post something. One can always refer to the archived discussion using links found using the above instructions.

Let's get this party started. I'm hopefully assuming this current effort will go through. If so, those of us posting here will surely be the new SG leaders, helpful veterans (etc) of the second wave of CoH.

Hey we get to be mentors and take on Side Kicks!  Like back before the whole "Super Sidekicking" system went into place.

... Do we get account data? What does it buy? This is what the talks do - they specify exactly what is to be purchased and then the lawyers step in and insure everyone gets what they expected to get.

It occurs to me that there would likely be major hassles with getting account data back.  We know that NCSoft deleted the NCSoft player accounts for CoH players who were not actively playing other NCSoft games after shutdown, a number of people posted that they couldn't sign on to try to play other NCSoft games using their old accounts after several months post closure.

But obviously SOME accounts that were active on CoH are still actively playing other NCSoft games.

To me that suggests that the player data is not in a single repository form and that some (but not all) current NCSoft account data would have to be included in any sale that included old account data -- but that much of that old account data is in some form other than current NCSoft account data storage.  That sounds like a tracking/clean-up/data merge nightmare to me -- and one with a million potential legal pitfalls --  how do you sync-up the old data, security passwords, new account changes, people trying to claim old accounts ... gaaahhh -- I don't want that job.

I would doubt that NCsoft deleted any player accounts.

It's more likely that they simply deactivated them?

Just remember to keep an eye on your sidekick. If they wander too far away from the forum, they'll drop to noob level and get swarmed by a bunch of Freaks!

.....Wait, isn't that just called "the internet"? ???

Nobody, except the IRS maybe, deletes data anymore. Storage is way too cheap.

Corporations keep everything they can because you never know when you will need it. At the very least you keep it for seven years or so. Most potential lawsuits would have been filed by then. Most auditors don't generally go back further than 5 years (unless they suspect fraud and can make a case for it).

No idea what good those records would do them, but they don't know either so they keep 'em. Seriously, it is very unlikely they deleted them. How accessible they are is another question. But they kept them, just for marketing if nothing else.

Character data is probably tied to account but stored separately. If you recall, it was a bigish deal when you could log into your account from inside the game. This was something they did only because they wanted to enable in game purchases. Before that, you had to exit the game if you wanted to buy something then apply it your account.

Most likely, they just turned off the game in NCSoft accounts as noted previously. My account still shows Guild Wars and even the promo codes for Guild Wars.It could be something as simple as NCSoft having a master game list and turning one off. All accounts associated with that game will just no longer show it. Remember, they have experience with closing games.

Fixed :P

No, we shall not think of that day, we shall party like it's <whatever day the game is back up and running!>.
Currently; Not doing any streaming, found myself with less time available recently.  Still playing starbound periodically, though I am thinking of trying other games.  Don't tell me to play mmohtg's though please :).  Getting back into participating in VO and the successors again to.

August 30th was the day before the announcement. I'd love to party like that. Like my game never left.

Storage is cheap, keeping track of data and keeping data accessible isn't.  I work IT at a Fortune 100 company, and there is lots of data we keep for 5 years, 7 years, 15 years and we occasionally get memos from Office of General Counsel on data we have to ensure gets kept until notified to the contrary.

Everything else is disposable.

Data to support deactivated operations, after a time, is deliberately destroyed to ensure corporate resources aren't wasted dealing with it.  All email auto-deletes after 6 months unless manually marked business critical.

I wasn't contending that NCSoft has no trace of it's account records, I'm sure they have lots -- Activating that data to get actionable information out of it to restore people's accounts after two years is another story.

Hmmm, perhaps, I just want to put the bad day behind me.  The day I was forced to move back to CO and find CO had gotten worst, and the day that I also had to reload all the data on my computer because some jerk threw a bad tiny url at me that most definitely had viruses in it.  Not to mention losing so many things like that.  I was pretty agitated.  It was, honestly, the worst moment for me in many ways as I'd just begun starting an SG, and to top that off I was looking forward to I24.  I was also beginning to run +4 teams.   I used buffs, debuffs, I actually enjoyed playing support.  And that was taken from me, as support in CO sucks, badly.  Actually hate being confined into doing only one thing, as I get bored from that quickly and I feel anyone who thinks support is only doing one thing, meh.  Anyone who thinks I like doing damage and healing don't understand me either, as support is so much more then just healing.

I feel alone on CO for it and I feel like i'm just playing a boring mary sue game at times.  I still try to rp but go figure, meh, change that, shouldn't even be doing that come to think of it.  Cannot roleplay very well in a game world where it's all mary sues.  Then someone says star trek online is all damage, I ponder if I should play that while I wait instead.

On this I agree with you.  Odds are, they have the backups and whatnot still, and the account data, but translating it to another system will take time.  I think it can be done, but it'll certainly take time.  I know it'll be at least a couple months before CoX is online should the talks succeed and we get the game.  I am confident though things can be done.  They may even be trying to figure that out now as I'm sure NCsoft wants to be sure we, their former customers, can be cared for properly.  They don't want us to be left short again when enough damage was already done and it's understandable.
