I can tell you one thing that the Facebook crowd is doing - setting themselves up for disappointment.

I have joined the groups there and they seem to think it will be throw a switch and the game is the same! That scenario is HIGHLY unlikely. To be exactly where you were when the game went down at the beginning not something I think that will happen. It is not out of the realm of possible as it goes forward but to start out of the box after 18 months down and a new group?

I don't want to chill anyone - I want a realistic idea and have tried to be positive, yet open about all of these things. Folks it is growing ever more likely we will get the game in some form back. It is also quite likely it will not be at day one exactly as we were. I think I can safely say there may be an Alpha and then Beta and finally an open Beta to just start return on investment. Then market, and all the other stuff will likely be added in as we go just like NCSoft did it. In fact I am almost certain there was a 3rd party who ran the market.

So please, please, please temper your growing excitement with reality. It will be our home but it is going to need some coats of paint and maybe some holes got punched in the drywall. I can tell you the Devs are seeing some of the wild discussions and I know they are concerned that people will be disappointed with the immediate product. We don't yet know all of the details as to what is coming with the game - hence all the talks and meetings :)

I made a post a couple pages back saying they will go from hero to goat in 24 hours - it may not take that long!

Step 1 - get the game.
Step 2 - everything else.

The journey of a thousand miles starts with one step. I plan on being with the game the whole thousand miles. Whatever we start with - is far better than we have now.

I've have seen the post on FB also,  I wouldn't worry too much.   I think a lot of the people/past players have just found out, that there is a possibility of t he game returning.   A lot seem really excited and just reacting to the news.   There will always be people who expect too much Ironwolf, they are in every game and forum.   A lot of us are excited and grateful for the chance to have our beloved game return, and realised early on that it has and will not be an easy as a click of fingers.

I so agree with you, Whatever we start with is better thank have now!   Thank you and to all the people working to make this happen.

Cheers xx

The main object is to get the game back, then the next stage can proceed, people will always think they know better, this is what makes things interesting. But let's get the game back first!

Well we want the game back, and yes there is some pie in the sky stuff out there but we are wishing on stars because we have nothing concrete in front of us.   Its excitement, unbridled and unfocused but I think when the game comes back, in what ever state, people will just be happy to play again.

I might speculate wildly, but if I can blast or scrap stuff again, I'm not going to complain regardless what shape the game is in.

This is pretty much exactly how I see it. And I think when other people see an actual login screen in front of them, they'll forget all about the little details they thought were essential. They'll just be happy to play again too.

I'm glad you're posting that here and elsewhere, Iron Wolf. It will hopefully keep people from being disappointed by their own expectations. :D

duane

thank you iron wolf for your efforts and those who are helping you.

You are correct about the facebook crowd/coh community:  it is like herding cats and the passion for the game sometimes blinds the reality of the situation on the ground.

Thank you again.

City of Heroes, the Choose Your Own Adventure book!

City of Heroes: Golden Age rises again!

You defeat the Mortificator! You receive 54 experience and 218 influence.

Look around

You are standing in a narrow sewer tunnel. There is a passageway in front of you. Nearby sits a large crate, pulsing with light and humming softly.

Search crate

The lights go out. You hear several splashes disturbingly close to where you're standing.

It's dark and you are likely to be eaten by a hydra.

I agree with you here. I am super happy and thankful  if we just get the core game back. Does not matter what issue or shape it is as long as it is as good "core" game as it was when it closed.

Really nice to see lots of new folks coming to the forum. Activity is fantastic :) Positve vibrations like ripples in the water.

First off, I would like to say a big THANK YOU to Ironwolf for taking on such a big endeavor as trying to get our City back.  And, a big THANK YOU to the folks/team that are endeavoring to work with NCSoft to purchase the IP/Game.  This is by no means an easy task, in fact, more like monumental.  Patience is a virtue. ;)

It would be great if we get the game back at I23, with the new DEV team working to release I24. Get I24 out the door and stable, then begin work on CoHV 2.  This is my pie in the sky. :D

i24 is a "would be nice" thing to me, but if they release it as stable as the game was at i23, and throw all their effort into making CoH2, I'm completely fine with that too.

Actually I have thought along the  same lines.  With COX back there won't be a mad dash to any of those legacy games. Its just a  fact. Why would you go to COH lite when you can have the original?

What I would <hope> happens is that  <somehow> those teams fine fine efforts were somehow  used in either
a) the development of  COH 2
b) possible additional content while COH 2 is being developed
c) a combination of both.

All of these people put a tremendous amount of time and effort into something that we all were grateful for them doing. It would be a disservice to them if their work wasn't used in some way.

That being said, they may want to go ahead and test the market waters and try their luck in the market place. I for one, will give them  a shot.

ALSO being said, we're no where near a  done deal on this  resurrection, and if it falls through we will all be clamoring back at their sites with anticipation.

If we go back to I1 there won't be any MMs.  ;)

I1 means the loss of 8 years of goodness, but the most frustrating thing for me when I first started playing (June 2004) was having to read the sign at the train station and waiting FOREVER for my intended destination's "Next Stop:..." to appear on the sign and clicking the doors at the right time to get where I wanted to go.  Keep in mind that CoX was my first video game EVER at the age of 25, and that focus wan't one of my strong points, and you'll understand the myriad of faceplants that occurred before I realized that I was not in King's Row!

Ironwolf, on behalf of the Guardian server....

<licks for all the efforts>

Licks?  That's it?  No cookies or bacon or pie for the man?  What kind of Guardianite are you?   ;)

drmanbot

I know an instant money maker for the new team.

IF they get the data , and all of the characters/alts/ whatever you want to call them exist,  you pay a certain fee to have them unlocked from the nethers of the old game.

Now I'm sure some would @#$@#$ and moan about that, but that would be instant cash for the new Devs, and it gives us what we want. I don't want a repeat of shut down central to happen, and anything these peeps can do to make money to get into the black should be fair game.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Microtransactions and Pay2Win were killing the game, IMO. Sure, they made money, but it wasn't the same game and its soul was slowly being eroded. Playspan being terrible for the storefront on top of that was just the icing. I'd be happy seeing it come back as just subscription based.

drmanbot

....... Can we  <please> get the game back first before we start tearing it a new one? Right now the game has no soul, because its deader than Elvis.

They can charge me .05 for every time I take the Green line for all I care. Lets get it up and running first and then we can act we're all  entitled  to something.  :'(

Codewalker

Are you saying Elvis has no soul because he happens to be dead at the moment?

Oh, IDK. The option to choose a "no stability guarantees" server with i24 on it would strike a nice balance.
We were heroes. We were villains. At the end of the world we all fought as one. It's what we did that defines us.
The end occurred pretty much as we predicted: all servers redlining until midnight... and then no servers to go around.

I wanted to say again:  Thank you for all the efforts.   I'm enjoying the hope of playing in the city once again.

And I wanted to wish the best to all the people working on the deal:  and that all parties can come to a mutually beneficial agreement.

So we get the game back, but it goes into maintenance mode?

Depends on the size of the dev team. If it's big enough, developing both games is fine. But if it's too small, I'm more in favor of getting CoH to a stable point (stable I 24), and then working on a better engine for CoH2, with more options for storytelling and a dynamic world.
I used CIT before they even joined the Titan network! But then I left for a long ol' time, and came back. Now I edit the wiki.

My guess - not based in knowledge - just a guess, that likely the game returns and gets running and in the meantime gets ported to UnReal 4 and updated to more easily worked platform.

I am not positive of this just that it seems very likely. It would clear the spaghetti mess of 10+ years of code and get a nice graphic update that way. i honestly don't know if they plan to update the Original CoH after the purchase, if they do I am sure we will get more answers, soon.

And of course that would be "Soon" after the purchase is successful. If this attempt is successful. They have more to focus on with the deal itself at the moment than the what ifs, and they have plenty of time to iron out their development plan after they find out if they're even going to need one.
