On a somewhat-related note, the EFF is requesting that a DMCA exception be granted to allow the creation of third party servers for defunct games:
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2014/11/eff-asks-for-the-right-to-revive-abandoned-online-games/
Well, more specifically, it would make reverse engineering the communication protocols for online games legal; not quite the same as allowing duplication of an MMO's servers. It would still be a nice bit of progress towards allowing the revival of abandoned games.
So far so good. Onward and upward!

Though it doesn't apply to MMOs. "The group carves out space for restrictions on massively multiplayer games, though, saying the exemption should not apply to "'persistent worlds,' in which the game's audiovisual content is primarily stored on the developer's server and not in the client."

I'd like to see a zone where that was a thing....let people custom build a GIANT ROBOT costume for a generic become giant robot device or somthing...but alas
I like that idea a lot.

Thanks. All of this has been really awful timing... Nate makes a big announcement and BAM...
I have to move...and then I end up having hardware issues...and then I end up having health issues...
So there's this really great nothingness out of Revival *right* after the big fancy announcement... lol

-shrugs- C'est la vie.
I suppose all that will make the ultimate victory that much sweeter.

Well well...it begins.   In my opinion, it's only a matter of time before this "don't get emotionally invested in your game because it is going away at some point" thing has to change.

Alot of the problem of modern games and the whole server authenticating for even single player issue that DRM and the like introduced, is that before when you bought a game, you owned it.  Now it's like you don't actually own the game, the fee is just a lease until the server shuts down and then they just say "Screw you, sucker!".  Older games you could actually even host your own server, and have people join you for say, a cooperative or deathmatch game.  Then it's reversed so much that even single player requires internet and server access, which is not what gamers were originally paying for.

In a sense, the true damage piracy had inflicted on gaming was the fact that people are finding it impossible to play games that are recently made when developers had started using DRM and the underhanded issues that came with DRM.  Just as cheating and punkbuster caused damage to modding for a time, piracy damaged the whole original purpose of game ownership.
Currently; Not doing any streaming, found myself with less time available recently.  Still playing starbound periodically, though I am thinking of trying other games.  Don't tell me to play mmohtg's though please :).  Getting back into participating in VO and the successors again to.

You've not seen CO......think brown everywhere at ALL times.  Rusty redish brown everywhere at ALL times.....with no day night cycle for the whole month of october.  With events that are generally trivial and very bad lockboxes.  :/

lets just be glad they aren't a novice on the RGB scale or that brown could have a tint of green and that would just be messy.

in regards to CO..... I played it like 1 time for a few days back before CoH shut down, I came back to CoH very fast. the voice overs were just too corny and the gameplay was too random (secondary weapon items, "hey I'd like another one of those personal force-field things.... oh but instead I keep getting multiple copies of crap and new stuff I've never heard of."
There is always another way. But it might not work exactly like you may desire.

A wise old rabbit once told me "Never give-up!, Trust your instincts!" granted the advice at the time led me on a tripped-out voyage out of an asteroid belt, but hey it was more impressive than a bunch of rocks and space monkies.

This is a random off topic of the random topic being discussed right now post :P just warning everyone.

With the release of Big Hero 6 in the future, the soundtrack has been made available, and holy batman I wish Henry Jackman would do the compositions for ANY hero game. Even just listening to the samples on iTunes it felt like the story of a hero was being projected through his music. I really feel like this is such an under utilized tool in a game developers arsenal. Music can suck a player in so deeply and emotionally that it amazes me how overlooked this subject is. If we ever do get the City of Heroes world back, and someone goes on to make a 1.5, I beg them to consider this matter greatly. You know when you turn on a great hero movie like the incredibles for instance and you're sucked into this film, not only because of the imagery but the music flows so perfectly with said images it's almost like your brain opens a door to this universe allowing you to personally explore it, and although its destiny is pre-determined you really don't care because the journey is so beautifully immersive. I wish I could say -any- hero or villain MMO did this but unfortunately it doesn't seem to make a large impact.

So this is my plea, please carefully plan the musical aspects of 1.5 and so on, at least allow future modifications. This was a major problem in the CoH world, and even late in its life it was extremely difficult to modify the music in game simply because te system implemented was so old and archaic. They built themselves into a musical box and ended up regretting it severally and although attempts were made to change this, it would have been much to costly and time consuming... Please don't let my pleas be unheard!! :P anywho that's my rant hopefully some people agree...

P.S I strongly recommend looking into Henry Jackman for great compositions!

Archeage's halloween consisted of...

1.  Grow or buy 10 pumpkins and deliver to auction house agent for a crappy random reward, locked to once a day.
2.  Buy, with actual cash money, a RNG box with a teeny weeny 0.1% chance of getting the holloween costumes everyone wanted (and that they stripped the stats from anyway, unlike RU/KR versions of the same thing).
3.  A bunch of decorations you could BUY in the cash shop, for actual cash money, IF you were lucky enough to own land with a house on.

That was it.

I'd comment but already enough of a threadjack. Makes us appreciate what we got in CoH for our monthly sub and later for free*

Question, when the game comes back can I render the video stream of my playback wit Sony movie maker? I have this on my laptop :)

Does anyone know if the server structure will be similar to before? I was subbed with auto-draft from day one and made the move to Exalted when it went up (which I regretted) and would like to make sure I build somewhere populated this time.
I can't think of anything clever to place here as I am currently over-caffeinated on very little sleep. All the cool people have a signature, so I will drop random text here trying to fit in.

I would assume that there would only one or two servers when/if our came comes back.
