Awesome.   So basically we probably don't have to worry too much about Legacy CoH not working with the new Windows.

There was no real cause for worry anyway.

This is the Internet. "Cause" is not required.  :)
I wouldn't use the word "replace," but there's no word for "take over for you and make everything better almost immediately," so we just say "replace."

2. "All that bad mojo won't happen to us," they reassured each other during their teleconference calls. "All those lightning bolts NCSoft called down upon themselves, those won't strike here. That was an anomaly." There is no doubt in my mind that the lessons learned during the CoX shutdown have zoomed over the heads of over 75% [or more!] of the major gaming houses with the speed and facility of the Concord on its daily run to Europe. [Never mind that the Concorde is dead too. *sigh*]

Turbine did with one of their games, hence the release of the server code to the fans. I want to say Asheron's Call...

Smed has said directly that as long as there are players wanting to play Everquest/EQ2, they'll keep em around. Frankly, in spite of the other games Sony's shut down, I tend to believe him...EQ doesn't have the licensing snafus of properties like Matrix Online or SWG, and he's shown a particular fondness for Norrath.

I have to confess I wasn't worried personally.   I believe it was a few posts by people like Codewalker that put my mind at ease on that one.

Truthfully, I just posted that because it seems like it should be said often to help quell the "CoH will shutdown when they release the next Windows!" rumors.

I've always thought that Blizzard is awesome as long as you're not talking about WoW. -Looooooooooooong time fan of Starcraft, Diablo, and pre-WoW Warcraft-

Even WoW at the time of its launch was pretty different and out side of the box.  It took a bunch of ideas from other MMO's that came before it, and then changed them in small ways that players had been complaining about for years in MMO's.  Other MMO's were doing it at this time too like EQ 2 and of course CoH.  But WoW seemed to get the right of formula of old concepts that were loved in MMO's and change concepts that were hated in old MMO's.  Things like death penalties, zone size and zone travel, end game material as well as team mechanics.  I have never been a big fan of WoW simply because I just didn't ever get sucked into the world.  But it certainly made some changes to the MMO world, seeing how every game tries to compete with it now.  I just wish it was a Diablo MMO.  I could have gotten on board with that.

I think innovation suffered more due to WoW's success rather than what it did right.  Many see WoW and that it's successful but not really the how it was successful.  City of heroes likewise focused more on innovating new ideas and capturing the comic feel, and later tweaked and adjusted what people weren't liking after a time.  This was especially true as of, I'd say issue 9, but then i know others who say it began to really do that post-ED.  In that Post-ED forced the devs to listen to players more, and also the replayability began to really shine in CoX.  While WoW focused on end game heavily, CoH focused on replayability, giving more and more ways of playing the game and new content across the various level ranges.
Currently; Not doing any streaming, found myself with less time available recently.  Still playing starbound periodically, though I am thinking of trying other games.  Don't tell me to play mmohtg's though please :).  Getting back into participating in VO and the successors again to.

I remember how insane mids made me as I would decide my next concept/toon.

"There's not enough slots! I want too many powers!"

Then I'd play the toon and no issues with slots whatsoever (except for peacebringers... I couldn't get comfortable with slotting even with the incarnate alpha slot).

Builds made alternate power choices possible. I remember building my blaster around ko blow from the mako pool.

Peacebringer and Warshades would have benefited greatly if they could have gotten 4 slots for powers starting at level 30, too bad they weren't able to add more slots for them.

But when they altered Light Form for Peacebringers, that was a good start. Slotting for perma light form and defense cap when in human form was fun.  The downside was when transformed, defense powers shut off and had to be reactivated upon reverting to human form.

Power suppression rather then deactivation when transformed would have been so much better.

Hehe, yeah.  I actually put my lone screenshot of the shutdown (one was all I could bear to take) back onto my desktop as my wallpaper last night.  It's of my 50 fire/empathy troller, All Hallows Eve, hovering right next to War Witch in Atlas 2 on Virtue.

It's a little disorienting when I shut down my college work and see what appears to be CoH open and running on my computer, heh, but I love it nonetheless.  I'm still cautiously optimistic, but where Nate is still in phone talks with NCSoft and they haven't turned Team Hail Mary down yet, I became encouraged enough to finally put that pic back onto my desktop.  I have put that screenie back into My Pictures every time (through two different computers and a recent reformat of the second) but never had the courage to use it until now.

Here's hoping for Someday.   ;D  Someday soon.

My laptop has a group screenshot of (most of) my toons for wallpaper (see under Multimedia for my first effort). Seeing it keeps making me want to log in with any of them. It's still odd, seeing so many of my toons in Atlas Park at the same time. Before, I'd only ever seen two together, when I'd be double-boxing.

Speaking of which, I really like the idea, that someone had, about a successor game setting things up so that any of your inactive toons could be randomly selected to be seen hanging around in your supergroup base, as though they were off-duty, resupplying, getting medical treatment, making repairs, etc. That'd be really cool.

well speaking of returning, will the game still have everything in there except of player's character will be deleted?  ???

Content wise I would assume so. End use wise, character, Veteran Bonus, everything you basically had associated with will be gone

Yep. everyone will start at square one.  I have asked if it will be possible to either discount-purchase, or for all players to start with, a certain amount of vet rewards, maybe 48 to 72 month's worth if we pre-register.

For some people,I could see that being a problem. I know a lot of people won't be very happy having to re-purchase everything that they already owned. Hopefully something will be worked out, like a discount as you mentioned.

And the alternative would be not playing CoX at all.  Technically no one 'owned' anything, as per EULA.  We paid for the privilege to access NCSoft IP and long-term return customers were given extra perks.  The assumption right now is that those account records will not be shared, if they still exist at all.  'Proof of perks' will be difficult to verify.

There was a post by Iron Wolf asking about doing a some sort of vet rewards deal or just to let everyone start over. It was pretty obvious everyone wants access to these from day 1. Whether that will be the case is still up in the air, but I think it's safe to say the folks behind this ( if all work out ) will most definitely -try- to implement vet rewards either for free or for some cost. I personally hope they just hand these out free seeing as how the vast majority of those returning early on will be long term players, but hey if it can't be done I'm not gunna start crying and pretend like I won't be just as excited to start again.

I get the feeling there will be some sort of deal for getting back the vet rewards and such.   I'm also trying to convince a couple of friends that we can get our 50s back in a short period of time by powerleveling them. (They tell me they aren't interested in starting over)   I was never any good at it, but I'm a willing student!   8)

1. They really don't care about their playerbase's feelings. LOLWHAT. Why would they care. Caring is for feebs.

If you actually read what I wrote, you'll notice that I'm discussing promising to keep games open as a way to make money, not to avoid hurting people's feelings.

They don't own it now and never did. The issue with an MMO is the company always owns and operates at its whim. It can change the game at any time - even causing your powers to alter completely. This is reality.

The new company running the game has never been paid a dime. You can have no game or have the game and reroll your characters. We do not know the terms of the new game yet - it might be a pay XX dollars and get everything or a sliding scale where you can buy various levels.
