There's a feud going on between Apple and nVidia, and nVidia is refusing to supply older graphics drivers.  So they don't quite support all of the OpenGL features.

I suspected this was the case.

Haven't had Nv' GPU cards in a Mac in years.

It's amazing that in all this time the hardware power is there but software prevents the support of 'Open' GL.

Corporations.  Yeesh.

It all seems rather churlish.

I have to play the 'PC side' in Bootcamp to get the visual fidelity which 'should' be on a Mac.

Ironic.  The graphics on Mac CoH look 'flat' and primitive compared to Ultra mode.  It's night and day in terms of fidelity.

I haven't fully tested it with CoH, but VMWare has an impressive 3D graphics system.

That might be worth trying.

My bootcamp partition is nearly full give or take 6 gigs (more than I had on my 1st Mac.)  I'm thinking it may be an idea to wipe it and go with a clean installation.

As in the link above, this wasn't isolated to Macs:

" I just yesterday got an Alienware m11x R2, very happy with it, and it works great. For almost every game I've tried it with so far, Optimus works perfectly. I'm really enjoying the laptop. With one exception.

City of Heroes seems to be having issues detecting the nVidia graphics card. The options for the game grey out almost all of the advanced graphics options, limiting me to pretty poor graphics settings for the game. I'm guessing it is running the nVidia card however, since the framerate for the game is very smooth, but the game itself isn't detecting it in the options menu, and is instead detecting the Intel graphics, and is thus disabling all the options the game knows the Intel card doesn't support."

Obviously, integrated graphics might be a problem.  Sounds like a driver issue in the above instance but they may struggle to run ultra (thought Integrated graphics THESE days shouldn't be for such an old game.)  A 680MX should run ultra on a Mac aka piece of cake.  But it seems the petty squabbling between the two companies has got the better of their customers in one way or another.

Apple froze Open Gl dev' years ago (and for a company their size they just couldn't get it right...with about half the performance of WIndows machines on Open GL...)  I can see why Apple did it.  MS had Direct X.  Why shouldn't Apple have Metal?  Now they have iOS to leverage that back onto the Mac.  Sooner or later, hold outs will support Metal for the Mac.  Sooner or later, Macs will probably run Apple CPU/GPUs.  It seems inevitable.

What I'm after is taking screen grabs ('Print Screens') of my characters.  I've tried to do it Windows side with MS Paint but all I get when I paste is a little black square.

I thought doing this 'Mac' side might be easier as I have my graphics programs on this side.

Fusion might be a good option (thank you for the suggestion, Manga) as I can run Windows programs as 'Mac' apps without the navigational nightmare that I find with Windows.

Been to the website.  £70 to make your life easier?  Small price to pay.  It's something I have looked into before with Parallels and Fusion (a few years back...) but it now seems like the performance and graphics APIs are better supported and faster.

I've installed both Island Rum and wineskin.  But when I try to run Island Rum, I get "Error loading Manifest".  How do I get past this?

Make sure the manifest is correct.  Otherwise, I don't really have any control over the server the manifest is located on.

First, if you haven't installed it before, download this:

http://ir.powermad.net/macclient-wineskin.zip

Install it in a folder like Applications.

Wineskin keeps asking for a executable (which one?)

Also where is Wineskin? I can't find it-- to uninstall it..

Don't launch the CoH app, use Island Rum to download all the files and launch the game.  Otherwise the Wineskin part of it doesn't know what to launch.

If that's absolute, we're pretty much screwed anyway, as CoH is a 32-bit application.  There's no way we're going to get a 64-bit CoH app in the next 3 months.  So I'm hoping that info is incorrect, otherwise a lot of developers will be in the same boat.

Apple confirmed today at WWDC that 32-bit apps will not run at all on macOS 10.15 Catalina.

I didn't see that.  I'm probably going to install the dev version as soon as I have some time to do a proper backup first.

And Manga has an announcement here.  Island Rum will indeed stop working with macOS Catalina. :(
