From the Ashes..?

Icon.

What a stunning achievement.  Its mere existence offers hope.

Access to?  Coh's greatest achievements.  The ground breaking Character Creator with class defining POWERS!  The vast and Irreplaceable Zones brimming with distinctive character.  The 'best in class' interface.  ...and 'all' the NPCs..., the mission maps, Lighting - the immersive 'time of day', the legendary silky smooth animations.

A stunning achievement.  Worth repeating.  4 gigs+ of game client sitting on my desktop.  The agonisingly close to launch 'beta' Issue 24.

What's missing?

The 'spark of life.'  Server side.  Powers and Combat.  aka.  The missions.

But as difficult as bringing this 'spark' back to life is.

I feel confident with a client with 'most of that' data that defines Coh, character creator, classes, powers and maps....

...could there be a tremor in the force?

Obviously, I couldn't condone :P a top secret reverse engineering product done in absolute (for now) secrecy.

But it wouldn't break my heart if it did. ;)

My old duo partner was in the Coh beta.  I found the game a few months afterwards.  ED Issue 4 upset me.  But I stuck with the game ever since, only not paying my subs for about 9 months during a sabbatical.

There will never be another Morg to replace this one.

I take a dim view of NC Soft corporatively squatting on the CoH I.P.

They could and should have given the game to the open source community as a gift.  They could have kept the I.P to develop another game in the future.  Still.  That's not how the corporate I.P game works.  There are examples of previous titles/games forcing a Corporate game maker to 'co-operate' with the gaming community.

And on that note, I feel, having spent about £1000 on Coh over the 8 years I played it...I FEEL a strong sense of MORAL ownership of the game.  I bought it many, many times over.  I have three copies of the Disk.  I subbed.  I bought in game content.

The very least I feel I am owed is a single player game with the missing server side info to bring the game to life so I can play it by myself.  It often gnarked me that neither Paragon or NC allowed a single player capability.

That's the thing with 'iCloud'.  Someone can just pull the plug on you and no more game.  Despite having invested a thousand pounds or the best part of.  And if you count that over a 100,000 players.  That's a lot of money for a game you don't own!  BUT, in my view, morally, SHOULD!  At least on a personal to play basis.  Maybe it's time the rennaissance Coh community should author a new agreement with companies like this.

I guess that's what the Coh 'LIVES' movement is all about.  Moral outrage at our 8-10 year unique investment and community like no other being ripped out of our hearts.

Yes.  Community.  That's the one thing missing from 'in game' Icon. ;)  Sure.  I know what it is.  And what it isn't.

But what it is...to me.  Is more than rememberance.  It's hope.

At the very least, the 3 'spiritual successors' can use Icon for reference.  Interface.  Character creator.  Zones.  3 killer areas where Coh owned the morg opposition.   If not to copy outright but to look at what Coh did right.  And boy didn't it do the basics right.  SO RIGHT!  Sheer bloody poetry.

Reading between the lines.  It may take several more years.  (At least as long as any spiritual succesors take - and I do wish all 3 of them well at Heroes And Villains, City of Titans and Valiance.)

However, I believe, one day, Coh will live again.  There's rumour of one project that is re-birthing the early years of Coh through means of dark magic. ;)  I'd certainly love the opportunity to play Coh upto Issue 4 again!  ED be damned!  The later issues would come.  In time.

If other games can be brought back from the dead...then...by all that that's holy, let Coh breath again.

Hey, Tim Cook of Apple (and I say this as a Mac owner...), how about using some of that 150 billion horde to give something back to the community? :P

Failing that...I feel quietly confident that the Coh community will take matters into their own hands.  And sometimes, in a corporate biased world, it's individual and community action that counts.

Demonstrated with such emotive power last year and every day since...Coh's closure...

As Mace Windu said, 'Not yet...'

...or my favourite...

'Do not go gently into the dark...'

PS.  I have a nice picture of myself standing in front of the large Steel Canyon statue.  But I don't know how to insert pictures.  Anybody able to help.  It's a rather, 'defiant' pose. ;)

Use a site like http://imgur.com/ to host images.

Click "Computer" in the upper right corner, find the picture you want, select it, then wait a bit.

When it finishes, look for a way to get to your picture (Should be obvious..I don't use Imgur myself much, so yeah...)

Then, in your post here on Titan, edit one (or make a new one) and click the picture button near the Sp button and the globe.

It will insert two boxes that say IMG, put your picture's link in between them IMG like this /IMG, save your post, done.

Sorry this explanation sounds kinda strange, just woke up.

:)
I'm all dressed up with nowhere to go
Walkin' with a dead man over my shoulder

Waiting for an invitation to arrive
Goin' to a party where no one's still alive

Thanks for the info Arachnion.

I've finally gotten Icon to work, had to install newer version. Still buggy though.
Walking is fine but when I jump , I am stuck floating.

It is nice to see Atlas again, with the trainers there. 8)
I'm still learning how to use other maps.....

so weird to fire up CoH without anyone in it.
