Power Sound Effects

Which power sound effects did you like the most and least?

I think for me the sound effects for Street Justice were the best.  Great sounding smacks that went great with the dynamic movements of the power set.

I really hated the sounds for electrical blast though.  I wanted lighting strike power sounds.  I am not even sure what those blast power sounds were from but they didn't sound like electricity to me at all.

The hefty WHOOOM SMASH of Titan Weapons attacks was extremely satisfying to me.  The deep, echoing smashes of Super Strength were also quite pleasing to the ear for the same reason.  I enjoy the idea of pounding a guy so hard you can hear the impacts a block away.

The repeated sounds of capacitors charging and channelguns firing when you unleashed Suppression as a Crab Spider was also intensely gratifying.  It's so unique - in animation and sound, there's nothing like it, and it's very intimidating when a hulking brute of a crab spider hunkers down and unleashes channelgun hell on you.  I always wished that attack was stronger - several hits of around Channelgun strength, or at least equivalent per-hit to Longfang.

Speaking of, I hated Longfang.  I have energy cannons built into my spider limbs, why is my strongest single target ranged attack a piddly-damned machinegun?  I thought I gave peashooters like that up when I got my Crab Spider pack!  Why not let me focus-fire the channelguns in two, three, or all four limbs on a single target instead?

The sounds of Kinetic Melee were interesting the first couple times... but I eventually got to the point where I couldn't stand listening to them.  It's like standing out in the middle of the road as Japanese-made racing bicycles whizz by you.

I can't really recall any I hated. But I loved the cutting sounds of the Katana or ninja sword.
I am the gun that rains judgement. I am the chill in the spine of evil doers. I am the flame that burns with justice. I am the teal angel that rises from death! I! AM! KAIT0!

Lycantropus

My main being a claw/invul Scrapper in terms of play, for sounds it was:

Super Strength's Kapows! and Bams!  Like a gun going off in a punch!

That said, I got a certain amount of joy out of Sniper Rifle on one of my villains. "Bang headshot!"

After that, Kinetic Melee had a good wind-up/punch effect.

While I was 'okay' with Street Justice, it seemed the wind up was louder than the punch and therefore a bit anticlimactic- but maybe that's just me.

Earth control holding or immobilizing 6 or 8 mobs at once.  The pew-pew-pew radiation blast power that sounded like photon torpedos.  Grav control's Propel had a nice satisfying thump.    The tinkly shell casings you'd occasionally hear after a dual pistols attack.

Triplash

The swooshes from ninja run flips were awesome, I could listen to those for hours.

Dark Maul's rapid punches were a pretty satisfying series of meaty smacks.

Drawing a katana or dual blades. Ssshnikt.

Malta Titans launching rockets.

Footsteps on a metal grating.

On the other hand, there was a power in spines... Quills, I think it was called? The one where you keep sneezing spikes out of your back with this annoying rumbly fart sound. Every two seconds. That was irritating. That was what made me go looking for the "how to silence game sounds" trick.

The noise made by a kheldian changing forms. I ended that one as soon as I could too, but if I remember it was seriously boom-y. Very overpowering. They were also the reason I turned off camera shake.

But I think the worst of all was the alert sound you get when a proc went off. For some reason everyone around you needed to hear that sound too. It might have been fine in combat when you're not paying attention and you need the reminder, but when I'm standing around somewhere trying to do something else, and this guy's proc is squealing in my ears every few seconds... not so fun.

I mean there I'd be, just minding my own business in Wents, and there's like four of these chumps standing around me. There's quills whizzing past my face, gouts of fire farting out from their feet, robots and walking plants crowding the vendors, procs popping off every few seconds, obnoxiously large flapping wings filling up my entire screen, and a giant pink bubble making it look like someone's barely holding a Pepto Bismol elemental at bay. Shopping is such a chore in a big city. Jeez.

*blinks* What were we talking about again? Oh yeah, sounds. All in all I liked the sounds. Any I didn't, I used the silencing trick with. It worked out perfectly.

I always liked the great 'swoshSwooshSwoosh'  sounds in Sands of Mu.
Listen to the 'mustn'ts'. Listen to the 'don'ts'. Listen to the 'shouldn'ts', the 'impossibles', the 'won'ts'. Listen to the 'you'll never haves', then listen close to me... Anything can happen . Anything can be.

I absolutely adored the sound effects for "Street Justice", and it was a huge factor in the amount of enjoyment I had while paying over the course of the last 2 weeks of COX's existence. As I related elsewhere, my final character used that powerset, and man, was it a blast. I loved the thumps and bone-crunching impact noises.

Wholeheartedly agreed.

This!  I swear there were 6 or more different footstep sounds.  I always had music off, and I'd run around my bases to the sounds of footsteps, and I loved them all.

Off to listen to my old base videos.  :(

I want to echo the footstep sentiment. One of the things I adored about Super-Jump (my fave travel-power of all time) was the numerous sound-effects for landing on the various surfaces, including the ones for metal grates, sheet metal, etc, etc. It really made the experience THAT much more immersive, and it was such a little thing.

I love the sounds of any fist hitting the enemy. I especially like the ones with knock back. SMACK! Whoosh!

I hate the droning noise of Hide on my stalkers. Going into hide, fine, but once you're hidden, shut the hell up.  8)

Brightfires

I loved my Peacebringers' sound effects... KinMelee's "race-car" sounds were fun... SJ's were satisfyingly brutal... and yeah, the sound of a Titan weapon attack was nicely substantial.

The only sound effects I honestly DISLIKED were the Speed Boost sound (because people tended to spam it-) and Beam's "barnyard" whine. It sounded like one of those little mooing cow-in-a-can toys to me. Electrical had a few like that, too. o_0

Sounds wise, it was fun having lots of chars with Sands of Mu and/or Shadow Maul on a team. One hour on such a team and you HAD to go get yourself some popcorn  ;D

Super Firebug

It may be a bit odd, but I loved the helicopter sounds - the ones in Kings Row, Indy Port and the RWZ. I figure that they probably used publicly-available sound files from the Internet, but I didn't know how to track down the one(s) they used. (I'm nuts for aircraft.)

Actually, there were a lot of in-game sounds that got on my nerves. The "mission completed" fanfare, most notably. The redside and yellowside ones were treated as music, and disappeared with the in-game music, but the blueside persisted. Several power sounds were annoying, especially when they were left running in Wentworth's! I had found something online about substituting silent sound files for CoX's files, but you had to know the specific file names (and they weren't obvious names, such as the powers they were assigned to). I couldn't find a list of them anywhere, or I'd have done it in a heartbeat. :/ (CO's the same way. I'd love to silence the "got a mission", "turned in a mission" and "leveled up" sounds; I hear them far too often. And it figures that, now that they gave Telepathy its own passive, they paired it with the annoying Mindworm sound, that just rings on and on and on....)

I'd appreciate it if the successor(s) would consider giving us control over what sounds we hear - maybe have them as discrete sound files, that we can find, identify and substitute for on our own.

Steelclaw

The Steelclaw Award for best Sound Effects in a Power Set goes to.... Super Strength!

Honorable mention has to go to Power Blast.  Let's face it... any set that inspires FREEM! has to get a nod from the Academy here.

My least favorite power set was definitely Electric Blast.  Hated it.  Nails on chalkboard.  Not fingernails either... we're talking real carpentry nails here.

Dishonorable mention in this category of calamity goes to Teleport Self.  It wasn't that it was a bad sound effect so much as it really got on your nerves to listen to it over and over and over again when you had to travel a long distance.  Independence Port had my teleporters craving ear plugs.

Every single sound in Kinetic Melee. Loved. Them.
