Arkham Origins

So I have to say, I'm excited for this game.  I really liked the first two and I think this game looks like it could be a lot of fun.  Expanding the playable city, setting it in the dead middle of winter before christmas, having playable Area from Arkham City available from the last game, but showing it before it was all run down.  These are all things I think are great for the setting.

Also, having Black Mask in the story, billed apparently, as the main villain and sending 8 mercenaries after a younger, more inexperienced batman seems like a great idea for a story, and I'm really curious to see how it plays out.

Then I found out the Joker will be in it.   Honestly I think the Joker is over used, Batman has had some very good stories without Mr. J and honestly I think the Joker becomes a little stale, a little one note after a while.   Also after Arkham City, I honestly would be okay if they didn't use Joker in another Batman game for a long, long time.  The whole Joker arc from Arkham Asylum to Arkham City was genius and the way they handled the ending of Arkham City was, to me, just utterly perfect down to the last laugh.

They've done the joker, they've done him very well and handled a story for him that was one of the best I've seen.  I know some people hated (SPOILERS Ahead) in Arkham Asylum when he got all Titan formula monster mutated, and honestly the first time that came up I rolled my eyes at it too.  However in the larger context of the two games combined and the ultimate story being told, it really works for me.  Arkham Asylum set the stage for Arkham City which was an amazing game by all accounts and really got the whole Batman vibe down and they nailed the Joker and had a great 2 part story arc for him and a fantastic ending.  (Seriously I geek out to this day about that ending.)

So do we need him in another Arkham Game? It's been done.  The Black Mask with 8 Mercenaries out to get him is plenty for me, and when you introduce the Joker it begs the question, is Black Mask really going to be the head bad guy of the game?  If so, then having the Joker there threatens to over shadow the main threat.  If not, then the whole black mask thing is just a side story, which is disappointing since they keep plugging him as the main villain in the previews and interviews, and that means we have yet another main joker story where we could use some variation.

Also, and this is a personal thing I know, but I loved Mark Hamil as the joker.  I get that he's not really into the role anymore and said he won't be doing anymore of it after Arhkham City, yes eventually the role will have to be passed on one way or another but I think some time before we hear another joker wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

All said and done I'm still excited for the game, I'm probably going to pre-order this week and that's from a guy who almost never pre-orders anything.  I'll play it and I may end up loving it, who knows maybe the Joker bits will surprise me and make me like them, but I still think good Batman Stories can be told without the Joker and I think he suffers from over-use.

I may be wrong, but I don't get that he'll factor into this game much at all. Joker could just be there to set up the stories for AA and AC.

I'm super excited for AO, but I wish the "younger, inexperienced" Batman actually seemed younger and inexperienced. So far Batman appears the same age and his suit/armor and gadgets all look more advanced than AA or AC.

This is kind of a stop-gap title to fill in until the follow-up to AC is released, so while the world will be larger, the gameplay might not be that different.

I agree. That aside, though, the more I see of the game, the more excited I get.
