Favorite Primary/Secondary Combos
« on: June 08, 2013, 07:04:41 AM »
So I was reading the "The very first hero you ever made in the game?" thread and I was thinking about all the 50s I had.  Some were UBER, some were goober.  So how about a list of Primary and Secondary power choices that made your best/favorite combos in each AT...

Here's mine:

HEROES
Blaster: Energy/Energy of course.  Being able to play the knockback was a big help on teams, and running with my SG mates, Energy Torrent was a great way to scatter a buddies herd and make him furious (@Obsidian Ram)...
Controller: Ill/Rad.  Solo AVs, Stealth any and all missions.  Off-Tank, buff, debuff, make Ill/Storm jealous.  Ah yes...My main on my second account...
Defender: FF/Dark.  I only had a Emp/Energy and she was meh, but I had a friend whose main was a power house solo and team (@Perfect Black)...
Scrapper: Spines/Regen (pre-Regen nerf). I basically stopped playing Scrappers after Regen nerf as my guy (Spines of Fury) became so underpowered it was pitiful.  Ah the old days of herding wolves with my Scrapper...
Tanker: Stone/SS. The Tank among Tanks. Built for Hami, STF, and anything else I could get him in...Glorious!

VILLAINS
Brute: Invuln/Electric & Fire/SS. Have to put both in here as both builds were great in there own right.  Play and PL respectively...
Corruptor: Archery/Trick Arrow. Great on teams! Solid solo.  Only Sprint and Ninja Run on this one.  Took all powers in both sets (Except Stunning Shot)…Great fun…
Dominator: Gravity/Energy. What started off as a concept character turned into a turn powerhouse.  Great control and damage and Power Boost in the Secondary…How could you go wrong?
Mastermind: Robots/FF.  Great all around MM with plenty of flexibility, however, on the last room on the sewer mission on LGTF (the one with the Rikti Riders) had a team wipe except my Ill/Rad and I was called the ‘original’ Mastermind after finishing the mission solo…
Stalker: Staff/WP.  This was one of the fastest leveling characters I ever played.  Great survivability and damage.  Never PvPed with her though…No big loss…LOL
Arachnos Soldier: Crab Spider. Good off Tank and cool looking attacks.
Arachnos Widow: Fortunata. With capped out Defense, this was my SR Blaster.  Very survivable and good team buffs as well.

There you go…I left out the Epic ATs as they only had shapeshifting and no true alternate primary and secondary.

For me there are a number in each category, so lets go with the ones I used the most often

Heroes:

Tank:  Electric Armor/Titan Weapons:  This was one of my 8 Electric Armor tanks, and happened to be the one that I favored while doing I-trials.  Nothing like the sick numbers I was able to get in my resistance and defense..to add to the overall survivability in any Trial, hovering taunting Maelstorm was always a hoot.  In fact anything with Electric Armor as a tank could do some  impressive things.  The EA/Dark Melee and the EA/Ice Melee stand out to me for how much fun I could have with sets not normally seen.  2nd runner up was my Stone/SS that I made prior to Stone being a big deal, and pre-ED, as I used to 6 slot swift to make the -speed almost tolerable.

Scrapper: Had lots of these, but the lack of toughness during farms kept me from using these as much, but a spines/fire scrapper always amused me.
And I turned my Electric Melee/Shield into something fun to play with.

Blaster:  Fire/Energy..my first blaster made before pvp was big, and blappers were popular, I was around pre-wolf farm nerf, so I recal the epicness of a fire/traps with sb...

Defender:  Empathy/Rad as this was the combo of my first 50, later on my favorite combo that I never really played but enjoyed the concept was a Storm/Psy

Controller:  Ill/Rad for AV killing, but my all time favorite was a Fire/Kin...

Villian Side was my preferred play side so I suppose I had more of these than any other

Brute:  Titan Weapons/Fire Armor for farming, or my Claws/Fire for the same, or for fun during Trials, was always a hoot to out taunt some of the tanks during a BAF..

Dominator:  Fire Control/Earth Assault perma dom ended up being a favorite of mine

Corruptor:  Major Redraw was a Beam Rifle/ Trick Arrow that became one of my favorites from the wickedness of the combo, and the name I snagged.  But my AR/Kin was my overall favorite

Stalker:  My favorite was my Electric Melee/Electric Armor/Fire with a T4 Pyronic, so many AoEs, so many ways to kill.  And the most fun I had with her was tanking Anti-matter during I-trials, or for killing the spawns around the terminals during TPNs, when I didn't have to tank, this was my go to toon of choice.

Mastermind:  Bots/FF, my original name was a evil poke in the ribs to a player from my old server...

VEAT:  Huntsman Bane build, just fun with a gun

Sadly, I never got to my goal of total 50s..which for me was my own mini-game in COH.  I never was a badge hunter, or a base builder, but I sure self-farmed the hell out of the game.  Some days I really miss the destressing I was able to do during a 15 minute AE mission mindlessly burning massive groups of difficult critters.

Blaster: AR/Fire - good damage and no crashing nuke.
Controller:  Plant/Storm -  good damage, good control, and easy to play both solo and on teams.  Plus fun as heck to play.
Scrapper:  MA/Shield.  Good single target damage combined with the Shield Charge, who could ask for more?
Tanker: Inv/SS.   Decent damage (for a tank) and could survive almost anything.
Brute:  SS/Fire.   This was my money guy, could plow through AE farms and pretty much equipped most of my toons.

Never really got into defenders, MMs, or any of the other villain ATs.

Heroes
Tank:  Invulnerability/Ice - my main.  Played him almost exclusively for 8 years.  maxed out on influence on him 5 times during that time and gave it all to alts which I never played...
Scrappers: Martial Arts/Super Reflexes - had a lot of fun with this power set.  Insisted on using no travel powers as part of the concept.

Squishies:
you know those other guys who were not either Tanks or Scrappers.  didn't have a lot of use for them except for defenders.

Villains
didn't really play them but I did have a brute with a sword...

In many ways, this will be a list of my favorite characters as much as of my favorite combos. Maybe it's because I'm a roleplayer, but I can't really separate the two when it comes to picking a favorite.

Tanker: WP/DB - Built specifically to max her HP, my Willpower tank was huge fun and really, really hard to put down. Laughed at psi-users..
Scrapper: Katana/SR - Some of the best combat animations in the game (the other sword ones were absolutely awful).
Blaster: Ice Blast/EM - I also maxed movement speed/jump with this PvP-oriented build, and she was a riot in pitched combat...blapper goodness!
Controller: Ill/Kin - Picked this combo solely for thematic reasons on a Luna Lovegood tribute character (no, really), and she turned out to be absurdly effective. Very expensive perma-PA build...but she tanked Reichsman.
Defender: D3 - Anyone who regularly teamed with me knows I was something of a Dark Defender specialist. Best power combo in the game.  ;)
HEAT: Warshade - A bit slow to mature...but worth the effort.

Stalker: Elec Melee/Nin - The single deadliest character I ever made...
Brute: Fire/FA - A bit fragile by Brute standards, but day-um, could she put a hurt on things.
Corruptor: Ice/Cold - Chill em and kill 'em...
Dominator: Mind/Psi - Not an AT I really got into much (one of the few I never played to 50), but this combo was a fun one to make a themed character with.
Mastermind: Bots/Traps - Another AT I never warmed up to, alas. This combo was fun, though (excepting the horrible, annoying racket the bots made).

In most cases I had a 50 taken to at least T3 for every AT, and often more than one. I tried a good few combos, but these were my favorites. Close call in a couple cases, though, as I also really liked Psi Blasters, Dark Controllers, and many others besides the above list.

I absolutely loved Inv/SS or SS/Inv Brutes and Tanks. I just enjoyed how neutral their powers seemed. If I wanted a normal boxer, I could make it. If I wanted a behemoth of a man? I could make it happen. Hell, if I wanted a guy who fought by igniting his fist on fire? I just added an aura.

It was my go to power whenever I wanted a guy who punched.

Wow.. OK.. I liked some things because of the combo and some things because of the way the build worked but here goes..

SandStone-Dark/Stone Tank. Being and to stack the stuns of Oppressive Gloom and Fault was awesome and having Dark Regeneration on a fast recharge just added to his survivablity.

ShellShock- Elec/SS Tank. He had good resistance and minimal defense but what made him great is that I was able to get him to Perma Energize. Plus using the Combo of Lightning field and Powersink to drain Endurance and Foot Stomp to keep them on their backs.. nasty...

Avalanche-Ice/Stone Tank- So yeah Im softcapped to S/L/N/E, Have Perma Hoarfrost and Hibernate.. yeah good luck killing me..

Sunstroke-Shield/Fire Tank- a toon I made in honor of my son when he was born. Softcapped to all positions, Shield Charge, Fire Sword Circle. Fireball and Combustion PbAoE Goodness

Bryan Fury- SS/EA Brute- Lets See..Softcapped to S/L/E, Perma Haste, Perma Rage, Perma Energize... Plus Overload In the back pocket.. Footstomp down to 5 second recharge with the Superior Brute Fury Proc..

Reactor- Rad/Fire Blaster- Softcapped to S/L/E. Irradiate as the opener for damage and that 21% defense debuff. Blazing Aura, Fire Sword Circle, Combustion, and Neutron Dropped close range for PbAoE goodness. You need a toon to hold that BAF door... Thats Reactor..

Shiv'r Ice/Thorn Dominator- What ??? Ice/Thorn ?? PermaDom.. Artic Air, Ice Slick and Thorntrops combine to slow foes and confuse them with Fling Throrns, Thorn Burst, and Ripper take you down.. also Sleet and Ice Storm to further reduce defense and drop damage and Frozen Armor helps get to 45% S/L defense.. This toon made a lot of Spine scrappers jealous..

MajorHavokk- Crab Spider-Soft Capped to Ranged.. Tend to fight in Hover to stay at range. 7 AoE attacks plus the pets and I never even got to make the tank build.

I will get angry if I continue to talk about

 Borealis my Ill/Rad Controller
 Light/Blight Ill/Dark Controller
 Psy/Fy Fire/Psi Dominator
 Firewall Earth/Fire Dominator
 Taser Elec/Elec Blaster// Blaptroller
 Shifter DP/Time Corruptor

My favorite combos to play were (and in no particular order):

Blaster:  Ice/ice (hands down), but I also enjoyed fire combos on teams
MM: ds/dark, with ds/poison running a close second
Controller: plant/emp

I had a LOT of toons, all squishy--most blasters--and enjoyed a lot of powerset combos, but these were my all-time faves and "go to" toons when things got dicey.  I was starting to enjoy the water and nature affinity powers, but . . .

PvE:

1) Spines/Dark Armor Scrapper- AoE Powerhouse and, properly slotted, tanked like a boss

2) Dual Pistol/Fire Blaster - Another AoE powerhouse. Slotted to be able to take some hits to utilize some of /Fires great melee-range attacks

3) Fire/Dark Corruptor - Rain of Scourge, nuff said.

PvP:

1) Dark/Energy Stalker - Round in every aspect: Tank ability, burst damage, ability to play strategically, and ranged (Shark>Shark>Shark)

2) Psi/Ene Blaster - Duh.

3) Arachnos Soldier - Another versatile toon. With incarnates, pets could shred through enemies, the debuffs were nasty, and the ever-hated net to stop people from jumping around so much.
