QuoteFirst live-action monster movie movie from the minds of Studio Ghibli
Some of the best monster makers in the business have put together one amazing short, Giant God Warrior Appears In Tokyo (Kyōshinhei Tokyo ni Arawaru) — which also happens to be a live-action film from Studio Ghibli!

Director Higuchi Shinji is known for his work animating on the Neon Genesis Evangelion series. The project itself was commissioned by Anno Hideaki, director of the Evangelion series and key animator on Miyazaki Hayao's Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind, for the Tokusatsu Special Effects Museum in Tokyo. And as Twitch Film has pointed out, Miyazaki himself provided the design for the giant warrior beast we see here. creature. Thus making this the first live action short to come out of the Studio Ghibli brain trust.

I've only seen maybe 2-3 episodes of the Evangelion series so I don't if this film has any tie ins to it.  However, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is one of my most favorite animes.  It was the first one whose visuals pressed all my buttons for wow! Wow! WOW!!!  In fact, I think it was the first time I saw a laser sweep attack and it blew my mind!  So, I'm really happy to see it here.  Nicely done.

Ah, crap.  It was still playing a moment ago.

Edit:  thanks for the new link.

It was a CG FX + classic miniature effects short dealing with the start of the 7 days of Fire.  It was awesome.  Nice to see the next generation at Studio Ghibli looking beyond animation.

Just because it's not on YouTube anymore, doesn't mean it wasn't harvested and saved.  Changed the name in case someone was scanning for it.  Original name is "Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo" if you want to change it back.

My only gripe about this is the monster design (mechanical ray-gun?). I liked the abstract firey look of them in the original film.

Maybe they looked like that in the Manga series though, which I never managed to get my hands on.

That aside, wow... I think I need to go see what Gojira has been up to in recent years.
