Jack Emmert: We've Learned A Lot From City Of Heroes

Ten Ton Hammer interviewed Jack Emmert at Pax East last weekend.

They asked him about Neverwinter and he immediately tells the interviewer; "Star Trek has more users than City of Heroes did at its peak."

Which just seems weird to me. The question is about Neverwinter, and while the interviewer does compare it to Star Trek Online, what's going on in Jack's brain that a question about Neverwinter makes him want to suddenly tell everyone that Star Trek Online is doing better than City of Heroes ever did?

It just reminds me of the last interview that Jack gave a while back.

Jack also says; "But you're absolutely right on the companions. Believe me; we learned a lot from the bridge officers."

Which also seems odd to me because the AI for STO's bridge officers is horrible. It's in every way worse than the AI for Mastermind pets was. Bridge officers routinely get stuck on cables on the floor or faceplant themselves into a nearby wall for no particular reason. They also have problems negotiating doorways. That's open doorways that do not have doors.

So what exactly did they learn from STO's bridge officers that's going to make Neverwinter's companions so awesome? I hope it's something like: We learned that we suck at writing AI, so for Neverwinter we subcontracted that job out to someone that does know how to do it.

While I never interacted with Jack so much but was he anything like the stuck up, jerk, bow down before my awesome god of thunder punching, "Everyone is beneath me and a mere sidekick as I am better than everyone" attitude of Statesman?

On the other hand with all the flack (justified or not) Jack been catching from the COX community, I dont surprise me if he isnt showering down praises on the game or anything dealing with the game.

Jack was on my list of people I'm glad left the game, as Mr. "You have to enjoy things the way I want you to enjoy things."

The full list is as follows:

* You have to enjoy things the way I want you to enjoy things
* Oops, Controllers got two copies of Personal Force Field
* Psionic and Toxic are resisted so little that they should do less damage
* It's been five minutes since the last post in this un-locked thread
* TODO: DESCRIBE SHORTCOMINGS
* My players will play my trials for my many currencies

MMORPG.com posted video of a panel they hosted with him and five other guys, including one each from Wildstar and GW2. Good watching, but, yeah, JE was kind of a douche.

I really don't know how to take his references to CoH. He brings it up on his own, which seems a little strange to me, and he makes a point of drawing connections between it, STO, and NWO, with only a passing reference to CO. Doesn't sound very good for the hope for those improvements to CO once NWO drops...
I wouldn't use the word "replace," but there's no word for "take over for you and make everything better almost immediately," so we just say "replace."

He has always struck me in much the same way. I was not sorry to see him go.

The hilarious thing is that STO is F2P, while in its peak years, CoH was subscription-only.  So who cares if STO has millions of free accounts?  First off, most of those free accounts are probably not even active now, and second, free accounts seldom buy from the cash shop a.k.a. pay to keep the game going.

It's money coming in that matters.

Honestly, I think Jack is secretly pissed that CO bombed so badly, came off like the redheaded step child and was constantly compared derogatorily to CoH (which got rave reviews when it launched, and for years afterward) and he just isn't going to get over the fact that SO many people bemoaned CoH's shutdown anytime soon.

Yeah. That was the same feeling I've had. Especially after I read the article that I linked to back in February when I started this thread:

Jack Emmert Smack Talking City Of Heroes

It just seems like every time he opens his mouth, or anyone asks him any question about anything, Jack makes a point of saying something bad about City of Heroes.
