Gleefully Disregarding Copyright Laws
« on: February 18, 2013, 04:55:29 AM »
So, one thing that occurred to me while I was writing my other post about how I would make the game solo-capable/server-less was that if such a thing came to pass it would make all the TOS rules obsolete.  Since my characters would no longer be in danger of Generic-izing, there would be a few I would definitely be creating...

My Little Super Team

Twilight Sparkle - Magic Corrupter - Kinetics/Energy Blast
Fluttershy - Natural Mastermind - Beast Master/Nature Affinity
Rainbow Dash - Natural Scrapper - Martial Arts/Super Reflexes
Rarity - Magic Controller - Illusion Control/Radiation Emission
Pinky Pie - Natural Brute - Titan Weapons/Willpower  (might want to fudge the system a bit to give her a giant clown hammer or a Gummy-on-a-Stick)
Applejack - Natural Tank - Willpower/Super Strength

I would probably make more tribute teams/individuals but these are the first that occur.  Later I'd probably make ones for the crew of Star Trek Next Generation... Stargate: Atlantis... as well as some of my other secret loves.

What would YOU make for tribute copyright violating characters if you had the game without the risk of TOS?

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFIREFLY!!!!!!!!

pancake it, I just don't know how they'd work out other than Jayne being Assault Rifle with the BFG and Zoe/Mal being DP or maybe Beamers.

My FF/Rad Defender Viridian Beacon could discard the thin veneer of not-really-a-Green-Lantern-honest.  He already had Alan Scott, Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, and Sinestro costumes.  I got my costume nixed once, but I made a slight alteration from green to more properly viridian and never had an issue again.

And I already had Damnd from Final Fight as a Thugs Mastermind, with appropriately named Thugs that he would appropriately whistle in.  Never got called on that one.

And Inferior Blaster could just be straight up called Vegeta.  I had a couple of more recognizable Vegeta costumes for him, but I usually ran around in a pink button up short sleeve shirt and yellow-green pants which isn't as recognizable but is still a Vegeta costume.

I could finally have that Male Widow Mysterio...

Definitely Mortal Kombat. Oh wait I mispronounced that... I meant MOOOORTAAAAAL KOOOOMBAAAAAT!!!

I always loved the movies, even though I'm fully aware they're terrible. I don't really like playing the games though... I intensely dislike competition and twitch-based controls. So it kind of boggles the mind that I like fighting tournament franchises so much. :o

I did have some sweet outfits made up for a few of my chars though. Sonya Blade for my Street Justice, Kitana for my Dual Blades, Nightwolf and Frost for a cc. I'd happily put together more, plus a few from Street Fighter. Oh yeah that'd be awesome.

That reminds me: I had a Rayden Electric Tank, though it didn't get that much progress before I had to delete it to make room.  I think it was specifically inspired by a new storm cloud aura option...

I had a Rainbow Brite character (Empathy/Energy) after the original one got generic'd. I then kept the name, while redesigning the outfit and the back-story. But everyone knew who it was supposed to be. Her classic 80's outfit still sat in the costume closet, and I used it whenever I was around trustworthy people. And I used it a LOT in the final months, figuring nothing would happen. It didn't.

I also had a Dr. Jenning villain (Gravity Control/Electric Blast). An ordinary astrophysicist who became possessed by a dark alien entity after a mishap with a prototype telescope. I don't think one person ever got the reference.

And of course, Tim the Enchanter, who never, ever got in any trouble. But I think everyone, even the suits, knows Monty Python wouldn't have given a damn.

All my other homage characters were from public domain.

I made Destroyman from No More Heroes some time ago, since he fits the subject matter so well. Of course, he's not completely accurate, since he can't do a Destroy Buster...

I already had a Hit Girl ripoff from KickAss called Tweenage Rampage (DP/elec blaster).

Her normal costume was the one you see at the end of the film when she goes to school (white jumper/green skirt), but in adventures she occasionally changed into the one more often seen in the film with the purple hair and I could just hear the banana splits theme playing in the background.

I had TWO incarnations of Hit  Girl.  Bad Reputation (post Big Daddy incarnation) DP/ Dev her Biography: "They say I have a "Bad Reputation" but the bullies in my school don't pick on any of the kids any more. What can I say I am my father's daughter *shrug*"
and Bali Song  (partnered with my Beloved Husband's toon  "Big Poppa") DB/WP her biography:" Working with her father she helped rid the City of influences from  The Family. Hers is not a normal childhood you would say but she has a blast helping her father!"

"There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, and the sea's asleep, and the rivers dream; people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, and somewhere else the tea's getting cold. Come on, Ace. We've got work to do!" - The Doctor

I loved how the Costume Creator was robust enough that you could actually make such characters.  I wish other games had similar flexibility.

I've tried to flip this idea on its head and create a Wyvern agent in DCUO and could not get the look right.  Though I think a Longbow agent would be possible.

Still, it'd be fun to create the Freedom Phalanx in DCUO or CO, if it hasn't been done already.

Martial Arts/Super Reflexes
This combination was made illegal in forty-nine countries after the termination of the City of Heroes game servers. The act also prohibits Ninja Blade/Ninjitsu, Super Strength/Invulnerability, and Demon Summoning/Dark Miasma.

We were heroes. We were villains. At the end of the world we all fought as one. It's what we did that defines us.
The end occurred pretty much as we predicted: all servers redlining until midnight... and then no servers to go around.

Somewhere beyond time and space, if you look hard you might find a flash of silver trailing crimson: a lone lost Spartan on his way home.

I would have an entire set of Barbies.

I would make the occasional Barbie - in fact I kept AR Barbie until the bitter end:

I also had Broadsword Barbie and Sonic Barbie for a short period.

I also had a cosplay version of Ironman named Ironette.
She would be the anchor of a whole superteam of cosplay superheroines.

I never did my version of DC's Legion of Superheroes in CoH, but I always wanted to do them as well.

Rimmer, Lister and Kryten :D

I never did decide exactly what superpowers I'd have given them, but the Red Dwarf crew certainly did deserve a presence in Paragon City! :)

I've been gleefully plundering other folks' copyrights since the game began. The trick is I plunder Public Domain, or characters so obscure nobody under a certain age would ever know -- characters like the sword-swinging Colette Valiant, the hawk-princess Dale Vultan, or the vengeful Tisiphone d'Erinyes.

My knock offs were, let's see. I had Friday Bawdin (Traps/Beam Def), and Oscar Gordon (Sword/SR Scrap) who was just started "Time Corps" what was going to be my first public SG abouta month before we got the notice.
I had Frankie Stein & Claudia Wolf (Monster High) duo with my daughter.
Time Spirit (Time/Fire Def) who was in a Doctor Who SG as a kinda Tardis personification (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Doctor's_Wife).

I had  more homage characters than copyborrowed. Chromed Ninja (Bots/TA) and Wage Mage (Fire/Plant Dom) for my Shadowrun character, Captain Electron (elec/shield) for Superman/Captain America style etc etc.

Good times...Good times.

Meh, I so badly wanted to create The Phantom (When the Phantom strikes, lightning stands still) but unfortunately couldn't do so because the Pointed Mask option should have to be moved from the "Face" section to the "Detail 1" section on the character creator...

Ah well, with the new animal costumes, I'd try rolling a Hong Kong Phooey instead

Many of my characters started with the thought "I want to play a character with a powerset like 'X'" (where 'X' was some existing superhero or even non-superheroic character)

BluePulse (Elec/Elec/Mu Blaster) was a bad take on one of my tabletop characters (he should really have been a MA/SR/Mu Scrapper, but side-switching didn't exist when I created him, and I didn't know about Epic/Patron pools yet anyway).

Dr. Bodog (Robot/Storm/Mace MM) and Thunder Glove (Elec/Invuln/Energy Brute) were takes on Dr. Sivana and Black Adam (though TG eventually got his own backstory).  Gravity Hold (Gravity/Elec Dominator) started out as Sinestro.  Ms. Stungun (Energy/Energy/Energy Brute) was an evil Ms. Marvel (in her classic Silver Age costume, no less, but with an "evil" color scheme - instead of heroic reds and blues, I used greens and purples).

When the shutdown was announced, as a mild form of protest, I made alternate costumes for each of those characters based on the original (so Bodog got a Dr. Sivana costume, Thunder Glove got a Black Adam costume, and Gravity Hold got both a classic Sinestro costume and a Green Lantern costume), and I'd walk around in them.  Never got generic'd, because by then I don't think the GMs really cared.

Not all my characters were based on existing characters.  Some I just started with a powerset or powerset combination I wanted to play.  Sgt. Greenstone was my first Tanker, because I wanted to try Stone/Stone. Diamond Clarity was my final Dominator, because I wanted to try Earth/Ice (she was originally Earth/Earth, but I wanted more ranged attacks in her secondary, so I rerolled her).

And then some just slipped over the line on their own.  Dark Eidolon (Staff/Dark Brute) was another case of "I want to try out these powersets" and wasn't intended to be based on anyone, but while I was struggling with a costume, I looked to the Internet for inspiration, and there was Wraith, so jet-black skin and a trenchcoat it was.

Of course, in my saved-but-unused pile I have lots of copyrighted costumes, from well-known characters like Superman, Batman, and the entire Marvel Family, to obscure characters like the Whizzer, the Black Terror, the Golden Age Blue Beetle (with the chainmail armor), and even advertising mascot Captain Tootsie.  I never planned to use them, but I just made the costumes to see whether I could.  (And CoH's costume creator was so good, nine times out of ten, I could)

Sadly, no pictures.

That is just awesome.  I once teamed with  a tank by the name of "Bahzell"  he had been playing for over a year and I was the FIRST person to get who his character was.  Being a David Weber fan helped.

I had PINNACLE set aside for making COBRA characters. Most were intentionally based on original action figure or comic book appearance, but I tweaked a few, did a few "upgraded versions" and made a few customs.

There's more variants, as well as the customs on my FB photoalbum: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.2146145446775.123019.1040433906&type=3

Since beta/launch I had:

Jem - Technology Controller - Illusion/Radiation/Primal (all her costumes used color schemes from actual outfits from the 80's show!)

Nic - Mutant Dominator - Psi/Psi/Psi (He's basically my interpretation of what I'd be like as a "Phoenix" character. I used my own first name for his to avoid weird spellings or genercizing)

Out of all my characters those are the only ones that were in any danger of copyright infringement... Jem most of all. I never had an issue with her though. Her back story placed her as Jacqui Pacheco, the daughter of the original Jem (Jerrica Benton) and longtime love interest Rio Pacheco. But I always got tells from people about much like they liked my character and no one ever reported me in all these years. Nic was less obvious especially since he's not female or red haired. He's more of a fantasy fulfillment character for myself :) But I did not wear the iconic green costume often just out of fear of being genericed.

Dear Kyriani (and everyone else too), Thank you for sharing those images and stories.  The Jean Grey/Phoenix archetype fantasy makes a lot of sense and definitely has strong appeal for a lot of us.  Your version as Nic is KEWLNESS Incarnate!  I'm wondering whether you to took Nic to the "dark side" (e.g. Fall of a Hero) then back via Redemption?

One of my perhaps gleeful disregards of copyright as a rarely played lowbie I played solo when up with insomnia (like tonight); I named my homage toon "Stephen Warlock" (Mind Control/Empathy with LOTS of powerset color customization) and dressed him as closely as I could to Marvel's Doctor Strange.   By the Vishanti, he really glowed and looked magical in darkened warehouses and layer-cake caves; of course he levitated too.    8)

My fave homage character tho wasn't from comicbooks.  One of my many personal heroes I haven't met is Judith Martin, whose persona is likely known to most of you as Miss Manners (she writes lovely books about etiquette in the postmodern era and I believe still has a column), so my homage toon to her I named Miz Manners (Ice Control/Empathy) since she could freeze with a look or even turn a cold shoulder, or else heal with her warmth (eep, maybe I'm misremembering but I don't think I gave her Thermal but Empathy.)  Sorry, I'm not good (read: able) to upload images but she dressed in an elegant teal bolero with fancy white lace trim and an even fancier hairdo.  She also would have gotten to max level, but I'd created and mostly parked her on a server I rarely played.  Ah well, so many books, so few men, or something like that.   ;)

I never actually went villain on Nic, though I intended to briefly just to unlock the patrons. I would have likely worked that into his back story in a very "dark phoenix-esque" way. :)

I sort of had a reverse wherein the character that was ages ago inspired by Jubilee and taken in a wildly different direction was thought to be an homage toon... because Silver Girl was taken on Virtue so I had to choose another name, and nabbed Argent Girl instead.

I'd never even heard of Argent... wondered how many people thought that when I found out.

Twilight Sparkle - Magic Corrupter - Kinetics/Energy Blast
Fluttershy - Natural Mastermind - Beast Master/Nature Affinity
Rainbow Dash - Natural Scrapper - Martial Arts/Super Reflexes

My brother and his friends actually had characters with these names.  Fluttershy was spelled exactly the same but the other ones were done a little smarter.  Rainbow - and Twilight Sparkleys.  Still in the clear violation of copyright laws, but they never got changed.

I actually had a Invul/Fire tank that was named Flaming D-bag and it took a good 5-6 months before they generized me.  I told them it stood for Flaming Dufflebag in the email reply back.  So they changed it to that lol.

A friend had a toon called Cupid Stunt for about 4 years before it was generic'd. The thing that astounded most Americans was that it was actually a knockoff of a creation of the late great Kenny Everett from his prime time TV show in the 80s (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkqxagJglaI, not the best one of these but the first one I found in decent quality, the cardboard cutout "she" performs alongside is the 80s UK main chatshow host of the day).

I also ran across Buckaroo Banzai who apparently had existed for the whole 8+ years of CoH's existence.

The two I had generic'd were Debbie does Talos, and The pocket rocket which is entirely innocent in the UK and I got back on appeal.

ROFLMAO! over all the brilliant and silly names, as well as re-reading (re-viewing?) Ultraamann's JSA Golden Age costumes.  (Note: just because I find them impressive does not negate the possibility that I'm easily impressed.)  I especially chuckled over the Mozart toon (tune?) character names from The Magic Flute; Flaming Dufflebag LOL and awww that they wouldn't let you keep Debbie Does Talos  ;D - which seems quite in-line for PG-13/Teen wherein "Beavis & Butthead" is over the heads of little tykes and the rest of us just don't care.  LOL, I guess that at 52, I find "the pocket rocket" even in the U.S. innocuous - tho I suppose someone somewhere could take a Freudian view to practically everything; e.g., the Victorians who found it necessary to cover and dress table legs simply for being "legs" - now that's kinky! LOL, I guess that at 52, I find "the pocket rocket" even in the U.S. innocuous

Google it and you'll see why they generic'd it.

It is completely innocent in the UK and indeed has been used by sportsmen as a nickname (boxer Wayne McCullough being one).

Most of the 1st page Google page refers to motorcycles, etc. and even camping equipment tho LOL yeah i see what Amazon.com is selling under this name.  Oh well; someone out there is having fun and we must put a stop to it immediately!   :P

 8) You have a nice homage there--Fun!  And now I am ready to  Log In and Do Battle against that penultimate world-wrecker, NCSoft, optimally while feeding the execs to the Devouring Earth.

Guess we can tell what alignment I am playing tonight...   :D

I had an entire story arc revolving around this theme, set in the 80s-90s cartoons of France (my childhood :P)

(Right) before CoH's closure, I made a demo record of me doing the SA in my main. That means all the costumes are copyrighted, since my main (Mister Bison) is also "inspired", from Street Fighter (we don't know what the M. stands for, but in France, it's "Monsieur", the equivalent of "Mister", which should be abbreviated Mr, but things that stay are not the most logical ones.)

Briefing text had you going in a super market and stopping in front of a television show showing your heroes getting beaten down by the Clockwork king, and Lord Recluse, and inviting you to enter the telly to save them. It was another Nemesis plot, and after you saved them, they thanked you from inside the telly, but you woke up in a couh in front of the telly in the supermarket, wondering if it was just all a dream, even though you would remember it forever.

There are two versions of the demo, mainly for two of my main's costumes, and I think the second one ends better, but the costume is from the StreetFighter 2V anime series, where the first started with my favourite costume, Beefy Bison from Street Fighter Alpha 3: take one take two (right click and save)

List of the characters (their serie) [their powersets]:
Cobra (Space Adventure Cobra) [Super Strengh/Dual Pistols]
Ryo Saeba (City Hunter) [Super Strength/Dual Pistols]
Duke Fleed (UFO robo Grendizer/Goldrake) [Super Strength]
Starlion (Thundercats) [Broad Sword]
Ryo Sanada (Ronin Warrios) [Dual Blades/Fire Armor]
Ulysses 31 (Ulysses 31) [Broad Sword/Shield Defense]
Mark Landers (Captain Tsubasa) [Martial Arts]
Captain Planet (Captain planet and the planeteers) [Earth control/Storm Summoning]
Conan the Adventurer (Conan the Adventurer) [Broad Sword/Shield Defense]
Flora (Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors) [Plant Control]
Red Bioman (Choudenshi Bioman) [Broadsword]
He-Man (He-Man and the Masters of the Universe) [Broadsword]
(Adult, super saiyan) Gohan (Dragon Ball Z) [Energy Assault]
Captain Harlock (Arcadia of My Youth: Endless Orbit SSX) [Dual Blades]
Fantomette (Fantomette... more a series of novels, comics, and series) [Martial Arts/Gadgets]
Sailor Mars (Bishōjo Senshi Sailormoon) [Fire Assault/Fire Blast]
Seiya (Saint Seiya) [Energy Assault/Regen]
Kenshiro (Fist of the North Star) [Dark Melee/Martial Arts]

And my main: Dark Melee / Super Reflexes / Soul Mastery / Vorpal Judgement / Seers Lore.

If I didn't take the most iconic character of the show, it was either for costume or powerset feasibility. All of them had a complete bio, fitting freeing and death dialog (especially Seiya, hich would ressucitate crying Saori's deity name ^^ was fun to watch).

I just rewatched the second take... Yeah, City was fun more than just the gameplay, the RP... You could also live anything...

As an end note, the second take's end is also how I left the game till disconnection (which happened early the morning of Dec. the 1st). In my universe. We stood together till the end. I floated, arms crossed, grinning maniacally, atop the corpses of Recluse and Nemesis.

I had a Hit Girl homage called "Hail of Lead" (had to use the capital I for the lowercase L trick since someone had that name... the only time I ever did that trick). She was a DP/Storm Corruptor, and even had a Hit Girl costume which won a Halloween CC on Virtue. Her backstory was that she was from Praetoria and was Reese's foul-mouthed niece. When she had the choice to leave, she chose Paragon, mainly because it would have pissed off Uncle Reese... and when Emperor Cole met her before leaving for Talos, she flipped him the bird as she walked by.

Vigilant Huntress was basically a homage to the TV version of Huntress from the show Birds of Prey, and with the Gamine hairdo and leather trenchcoat was able to do a really close copy of one of the Ashley Scott promo shots for the show. The character actually gained its own "voice", so outfits changed to pull away from the copyrighted version but I did still have the original outfit up to the end.

Ashes to ashes,
Pheonyx

I'll suppose you're on Windows, not Mac or worse.

Open a file browser, and navigate to your game (if you don't have it, then you have a bigger problem. Should be in C:\Programs\NCSoft\City Of Heroes or somewhere equivalent. If you can't find a "cityofheroes.exe" file anywhere, you have to download the game from someone)

Now, without letting go of it, push the right mouse button (or the left, if you have made your mouse left-handed) on the cityofheroes.exe file, move the cursor around a bit, and back on cityofheroes.exe or in another browser window, and release the right mouse button. In the popup, choose "create shortcut here".

Right-click on the new shortcut to cityofheroes.exe you've just created, and open up its properties. In the target field of the shortcut tab, add
Code: [Select]
-demoplay to the end of the field. So that the content change from something like this
Code: [Select]
"C:\Programs\NCSoft\City Of Heroes\cityofheroes.exe" to this
Code: [Select]
"C:\Programs\NCSoft\City Of Heroes\cityofheroes.exe" -demoplay. Close the properties.

You can rename the shortcut "Play City of heroes demo" if you'd like. And move it anywhere. All you need to do now is drag & drop a .cohdemo file on it and it'll play it.

For better enjoyment, you can pause and resume the demo replay with the 'p' key, and you can free the camera with 'F2', you'll then be able to move around as if you were in a PvP Match, except you don't have a camera model.
Yeeessss....

Pure AWESOME SAUCE!!!!!  *chants "We're not worthy" from Wayne's World*   Guess it's just as well I got in on the last 3.5 years (approx.) rather than the full 8 of so many of you (as well as my many SGmates who don't even lurk here.)    Musing, maybe I should wander over to the Stock Watch thread and see how B. & S. and GW2 are doing.   Maybe I'll even (*gag*) log into DDO again.   *sings "I Want My CoH" to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAD6Obi7Cag  (Dire Straits, "Money for Nothing")
