City of Heroes References in the Real World
« on: January 30, 2013, 03:31:45 AM »
As I make the short drive in to work each morning, I usually turn on the local public radio station to catch a little of the news from NPR. During the particular time slot of my trip, I tend to hear a short program about global economics and market events. This short program sometimes has a segment that features a multiple choice quiz about recent economic-related trivia. The regular contributor of this segment is none other than...

"Lord Recluse".

Every time I hear it I smile a little bit and think that he's not too far removed from the in-game character (aside from the whole obsession-with-world-domination thing, natch).

I'm curious what other references to City of Heroes you see or hear in the real world on a regular basis, and what memories or emotions they might trigger.

Edit: for punctuations

This was an image in a real estate article at queensnyc.com .. There were a few articles that discussed the troubles of this place in Queens, NY; including foreclosure, auction to the highest bidder, and the wish to change the name due to association with failing companies.

Quite a parallel, huh?

Full articles here:
http://queensnyc.com/2012/09/atlas-park-mall-in-glendale-queens-wants-to-change-its-name/

To be honest I haven't seen that many real world references, but when I do I get hit with nostalgia so hard it hurts.

Here in Houston every other weekend when we go to pick up our granddaughters we pass a business named Paragon Pools. Without fail I think of our city.  :(

What's weird is, I know that it's not, but I've been down streets in Charleston, South Carolina, and in Boston that look almost exactly like that.
I wouldn't use the word "replace," but there's no word for "take over for you and make everything better almost immediately," so we just say "replace."

Saint Martial is the name of several villages (communes) here in France. One of them I got through each time I visit my grand mother (once a year).

Though none of them has the Golden Gizah, several has a carnaval neighborhood xD
Yeeessss....

Mezz Street, huh? Quick question: does that dominate your attention while you're there? Or do you not let it control your thoughts?

Oh, and is the muzak stunning or does it make you fall asleep?

I kid, I kid. But seriously... whatever you do, do not try to hold people on an elevator. They'll get confused, and afraid, and then security will snare you and knock you down.

I do see the resemblance.. I remember leaping from rooftop to rooftop, slaying minotaurs and cyclopses..Is that correct grammar?  :o

Someone over at ThinkGeek decided to mourn CoH in an image for a product they just started selling.

Pretty cool, actually. Who ever painted that figure did a pretty good job.

I don't have any specific ones, but I get flashes, like things in passing that remind me of the game, the way passing a certain thing, like a park bench or something, reminds you of an ex-girlfriend or passed relative. Seeing a subway on a commercial gives me the strongest deja vu for the Underground in Praetoria, for instance.
I wouldn't use the word "replace," but there's no word for "take over for you and make everything better almost immediately," so we just say "replace."

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
"Frank! It's the love boat to Cuba! Shuffle board and pineapples filled with rum. Know what they do? They put little paper umbrellas sticking out the top so that when it rains, it don't thin out the liquor."

I guess I shouldn't be Surprised I don't see Pulsar in there :/ I was on for awhile with the vigils in Paragon but then I devoted the remaining days on COH beta playing content that would never see the light of day on live.

Necro!

My son is playing Legend of Zelda:Skyward Sword, and something keeps causing Link (or someone; I'm not really paying attention) to whistle. The sound effect is the exact same whistle sound effect used for the MM:Thugs Summon power.

I have had occasional washes of nostalgia while playing other games, but this was the first one from someone else playing something in the other room.
