TMZ caused CoH flashback
« on: January 16, 2013, 04:11:18 AM »
I just had a stroke or possibly the equivalent of a Vietnam flashback. Okay, it was more mild than that but somehow just as bad.

I was hit with a little fatigue and laid down with the TV still on but before doing so I hit play on today's episode of TMZ that I had recorded a few hours earlier.

I could hear the room discussing Oprah and her interview with Lance Armstrong when suddenly I heard something I haven't heard in far too long.

"Oh great, it finally happened. I've snapped.", I thought to myself for a moment but I decided to rewind the show just in case I wasn't crazy and sure enough, playing over a few seconds of a clip on TMZ was the fanfare I first heard 8 years ago upon first entering the city that I love so much.

I can't forget. I won't ever.

I have that music saved, too.   It's wonderful music, and, for many players, it was their first musical introduction to the sounds of the City, a song that evokes heroism and grand adventure.

Please tell me they didn't play this song with Lance's entry onto the set...

Actually, this has perked my interest lightly.
At least over here in Germany, using music in a TV show is a commercial use, meaning the show has to pay royalties or have explicit permission by the artist to use it. I fail to imagine NC giving that permission.

Forgive my ignorance here, but what is TMZ?
We're heroes. When something threatens our fair city, we fight it tooth and nail, and by God, we make it pay for every bloody inch!

A TV comedy/tabloid format.

Here's the clip in question, btw:

The licensing issue was discussed pretty thoroughly in the early days of Plan Z. NC evidently licensed the music in the first place, so it's basically out there in the wild and available to license by anyone with the right color of money (which is to say, any). I believe GG is already planning on using it for H&V.
I wouldn't use the word "replace," but there's no word for "take over for you and make everything better almost immediately," so we just say "replace."

dwturducken is correct about the licensing.
I had a similar moment of questionable sanity several years ago, just a few months after launch, when I heard the same music being played over a bumper in the Ellen show.

I was initially excited, as I thought Ellen was about to feature the game.
Alas, after some research, I learned that the stiff was just licensed 'from the wild' as you say.
It appears that a lot of the initial music was done this way.
I'm not sure how long that continued though....

Harvey (the boss) or the voice-over guy?

The voice-over guy. The one who was scream-singing.

He's one of the producers of the show. He's quite good at sounding that kind of scary. I've often wondered what it would be like to hear him in real life.

I kinda envy people who can do those "Hype" and "Dramatic" voices on cue. My throat would be raw in a matter of minutes. This guy is pretty awesome at it, too:
