So much for the end of the world.
« on: December 22, 2012, 02:39:55 AM »
Well, as usual, seems like the end of the world didn't come. We still have time to come out with Plan Z before someone picks another random date for the end of the world.

I know that this has been happening since the beginning of recorded civilization, but I am getting really tired of doomsday predictions.

The jokes just arent funny anymore!

I always took them about as serious as dropping a penny on the street. Good for a good laugh, but nothing remotely serious.

A statement I made in 2008 at work is still posted in the office.

"In the beginning, there were two people sitting and talking about the future of the planet. Then a third person approached them, pulled out a cardboard sign that said "The End is Near." and thus the world has been ending ever since."

Fair enough :)

If enough people derive enjoyment from this end-of-the-world then whatever, I'm just jaded to it. Y2k makes these other predictions all seem silly.

Haven't you heard? There were miscalculations and translation errors. The world will actually end on the 23rd.

I wonder what the next excuse will be when the 23rd passes in a quiet and uneventful manner....

I'm a little late to this party, but:

Seems that the Mayans, well, they pretty much sucked at predicting, otherwise they could have predicted the end of their own civilzation and stuff I guess.-

Maybe the world did end, and then got replaced by the current mess.  This has probably happened more than once.  I blame scientists.

I heard it from a far more credible source than the internet: David Letterman

This is true.  I was hoping we'd wind up with superpowers and either unmake the world through CoH-style PvP, or somehow create our own real-life Paragon City.

Hey, nobody seems to know this, but the origin of the act of "prophecy" didn't necessarily have anything to do with foretelling the future.

Kinda like how "terrific" means something good. What's that all about?

Most "prophecies" seem to come from a couple types of people - users of copious amounts of "sacramental" herbage of one or several varieties, or folks bordering on senility who have been wandering in extreme climates with little food and water for extended periods of time chatting with the denizens of their subconscious.

I'll take my illusions with a cape, please  ;)

Perhaps they had it all wrong. The Mayans were predicting the end of the world a few minutes into Dec. 1.

This. It also explains why all the little figures on the Mayan calendar were wearing capes.

Actually, first time I've heard about the end of the world wasn't on the internet, I was living in Mexico at the time and somehow it became the main conversation theme on a dinner with some friends. I honestly thought Mexican ppl would know anything about what Mayans said, seems they didn't (mockery emails about this whole end of the world business already sent to all of my friends who attended said dinner btw  ;D).
