City of Heroes / Villains on YouTube
« on: December 18, 2012, 06:47:03 PM »
I just woke up to a Terrible thought.

What happens if we lose our content on YouTube? All our Battles & Demos. The Last Days of Paragon City?

Has anyone started to archive these videos?

Odd stuff sometimes happens. It would be best to always have a back up.

If that did happen, then you would hand out the video files and demos from your hard drive, of course.

Yeah there's.... something to be said about backing up your own stuff - I've seen too many people who claim "omg they wiped x and y off the net and that was my only copy!!!"

Why is it your only copy?

Never delete anything. Ever. I mean hell - I have like 4 copies of COH on ONE computer. I have redundancies aplenty.

So... if you find a video you like? Copy it. Set aside a partition on your drive and just log what you don't want to lose. I have several friends' geocities sites on my computer, when they announced they were closing I went to sites I knew hadn't been updated but played roles in my life over the years, and I got all the pages I could from them. (of course, 3 other more or less official archive sites sprouted up overnight also archiving them, lol, geocities closing 'to save space on the internet' caused a bigger problem than it solved...)

Anyway: archive away. But never rely on online sources to keep YOUR work 'safe' because it simply isn't. Make multiple copies of everything, because hard drives fail. Burn to disk.

I use download helper for firefox to save youtube vidoes.  Creators like Michelle host less compressed versions you can download of her work, others may do the same.

Just started using firefox but still a bit antsy about it. So far so good.

First sign of information collection I'm bailing. I cant use stuff that makes me feel paranoid and or not at ease. Whether it's real or perceived. Better safe than sorry later for me.

Agreed. That one always makes me face-palm.

Agreed. When it comes to your important data, redundant backups are key.

Burning to disks is less efficient in the long run IMO, taking up significant physical space and being more vulnerable to accidental damage.
I'm in favor of just getting spare HDDs to store backups on - much faster to work with, much easier to transport.
We were heroes. We were villains. At the end of the world we all fought as one. It's what we did that defines us.
The end occurred pretty much as we predicted: all servers redlining until midnight... and then no servers to go around.

Somewhere beyond time and space, if you look hard you might find a flash of silver trailing crimson: a lone lost Spartan on his way home.

I am in favor of backup HDDs as well, and burning files of particular importance to disc. It may be less efficient, but it adds one more layer of redundancy that I find comforting.

I've got copies of my videos on hard drive, flash drive, and my server. :) I've also got all the official COH videos (I think) saved locally, plus the high-rez versions of Aralcox's videos coz his YT qualify ones suck.

The HQ versions of Aralcox's videos were posted at one point though, right?  When I linked them in theother thread, they did seem surprisingly low-rez.

I don't think it's likely that Google will ever lose anything.

They were on a now-defunct blogspot site.
