The bartender looks at him funny and says "Get out of here. We don't serve food in here!"

A string was wanting to get a drink at a bar, but the bartender definitively said to it "We don't serve string drinks.  I don't care how amazing it is there's a sentient string, no."

Frustrated, the string walks out, and a passerby happens to cross his path.

"Hey, mister, can you tie me into a figure eight?  And then play with the ends to frizz them up a little bit?"

The man, after getting over his inital shock at the talking, animated string, and reassuring himself it wasn't a kinky thing to be doing, did what he was asked, and tied the string as requested.

Confidently, the string went back inside the bar, and gets the bartender's attention.

"Yes, what can I... HEY.  You're that string, aren't you?"

"No sir!  I'm a frayed knot."
