Thank the media: Hail Mary Edition
« on: November 28, 2012, 03:33:45 AM »
Hey there. Press releases are away - thanks to Rae - and I believe we could use a dedicated thread to help keep everyone posted on the coverage the TF receives. I'll try to keep the OP updates as I can, and any contributions to the list would be more than welcome {a search for "City of Heroes" and "Disney" should be a good start}, just send me a PM or post a link in this thread. Furthermore, I strongly recommend taking part in discussions or leaving feedback in the comments section if one exists, even if it's just to thank the journalists for covering the topic - let's make ourselves heard, but politely and maturely as always.

Side note - Rae has put together a great FAQ regarding the Disney pitch you should probably check out if you have any Qs that have probably been frequently A'd. Also, before the Disney campaign, a lot of arguments about CoH repeated themselves, so I took the liberty of putting together a quick "cheat sheet" to cover the common ones and the counter-arguments to them. Don't use them as copypaste material {and for god's sake, don't repeat them if you disagree} since using your own words is much better than a boilerplate response.

1} CoH wasn't making a profit.
A quick look at NCsoft's own earnings report will show that right before the shutdown, CoH was pulling in around 2,8 billion won quarterly, or 0.86 million dollars each month. While NCsoft has stopped publishing exact subscriber data after Freedom, that amount is roughly equal to 58K monthly subscribers. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/33551029/CoH/NCsoftReportGameBreakdown.jpg

2} Maybe it was making a profit, but for a measly 2% of their total income, they could just ignore it.
True, two percent is almost a rounding error in large-scale accounting. And twice that is their entire North American market.
Over seventy percent of NCsoft's total income came from Korea alone, with another twelve from miscellaneous royalties. So that two percent is almost half of their entire non-Asian market, especially since Europe dropped from last year's three percent share to below one. Q3 changed that for now, due to the GW2 sales, but I suspect it will revert once the release frenzy dies down.

3} It was old.
Correction - it was mature. Point out that throughout its eight-year lifetime, it constantly improved and added - a quick glance at http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Issues should serve to illustrate the point nicely. There are very few aspects of the game that weren't tweaked even built from scratch {power customization, for example} in spite of the original game engine not being built to support it. Another example would be the LUA scripting - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knCvNsPERlQ - that was supposed to roll out with I24.

4} You can go to another superhero game like CO or DCUO
You can probably answer that one better than me, since this point is entirely subjective. Good points to bring up would be the degree of customization, the scope, variety and depth of  content, variety of archetypes, propensity for altoholism, adaptability, lack of gear grind, ease of playing and the kind of community those things foster.

A note on NCsoft - it's unlikely to come up in the first wave of discussions, but since it's the one bent on killing CoH, it always surfaces sooner rather than later.

5} Stock and concurrency. Checking their stock chart - http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/chart?symbol=036570.KS - shows the release of GW2 making barely a bump in stock value. It begins to rise sharply after CoH's shutdown announcement, and that peak goes into a dive a week later, immediately following the Unity Rally.
Theory: Since the rally attracted media attention, it also probably attracted the attention of investors as well, which took a closer look at how NCsoft performs abroad and decided to get out while the getting's good. No proof, but the evidence fits. The chart jumps off a cliff on the same day NCsoft releases their Q3 earnings report - while we may all be armchair analysts here, seeing people making their living off it abandon ship en masse corroborates the theory that, even following the release of two blockbuster-budget games, NCsoft still has no future.

6} Profitability and survival. Tying into the argument of CoH's continuing profitability, NCsoft has demonstrated that it's not only willing to shut down games that make enough money to sustain themselves, but do so without offering any kind of explanation or reason. Therefore, buying into any NCsoft game is a risky prospect, at least for anyone with intention to commit - because all the effort and time you'd be willing to sink into it would be committed to a game of Russian Roulette.

7} Tabula Rasa and spite. Undercat investigated that angle much better than me - here - http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,5250.msg73319.html#msg73319 - and it draws some very, very unpleasant conclusions.

Can I insert my standard request that we pimp the doo-doo out of these articles? We need to make so much noise on this that Walt Disney himself hears us.

Tweet the articles, share them, blog them, drive up the traffic to those sites any way you can.

And please, above all else COMMENT ON THEM.

If we don't look interested in articles on our own campaign, why should anyone else be. You know. Like, for example, Disney?

Pimp those articles, guys. Pimp 'em hard!

Wow, you guys all gave great interview in that Starburst article!

I have to say, though, Ammon wins with his easter-eggish, "Disney is a paragon of a company..."  That definitely made me LOL.

Just contacted two more forums AND

I emailed Oprah to see if she could help!

EVERYONE EMAIL OPRAH!

We all know she loves to help out other peoples causes. After all its not just some video game we lost. It was the friendships we forged and the bonds with our families that we lost because THAT is what City of Heroes was to many of us! It was a community of loyal, Passionate people who love just being with each other.

I'm not meaning to be sarcastic, but I know this is going to sound that way:

If you're going to contact Oprah Winfrey, I'd recommend making a point to mention the ways the game and the game community helped you or a loved one get through a negative experience, or escape an unforgiving world, etc.  In the article I wrote (mentioned elsewhere earlier today; being published tonight or tomorrow), I have quite a few of them from my own player friends).

To be honest, Oprah's not going to care about some game being turned off; but tearjerker stories of heartbreak and renewed hope = ratings.  I'm not being insincere or insulting intentionally, but that's the truth of it. A significant number of us are going to need to play that certain angle to get anywhere with her.
If you see me posting here, you need to tell me to stop it and get back to writing.

This is what Oprah is ALL about.  If I email her it will be looking as if I am trying to promote myself.  If you mail her, it will be stories of people who had been helped by something and the Big Nasty Foreign Corporation cut their support network out from under them.

Then suggest that Melissa Bianco (War Witch) be contacted to speak for you.  Lead Games Designer in a field mostly dominated by men?  Damn skippy.

Side topic!  Apologies for breaking in here and if I'm using the wrong thread.  I am getting to the end of writing my Thank-You's to the many ezines covering City of Heroes and our efforts.  In doing so, I just found and posted to this:  http://www.incgamers.com/2012/11/community-driven-mmo-project-heroes-and-villains-now-underway/

It's my concern that open squabbling and charges of stealing IP and other "drama" will scuttle our efforts to get gamers and fans of superhero comicbooks (or should it be comicbook superheroes?) and seriously undermine our slim chances of TF Hail Mary's success.  In all seriousness, do we need to form a task force for Damage Control?

If you read the comments all the way through if makes us look really bad at a time when we need to be presenting a united and positive front.  Yes, I know we're all still grieving.  I can't count the times tears have leaked out as I read some article or went digging for some pertinent info.  While I can't prevent others from making negative comments (nor would I) I would like it impressed upon the community (Hello, TonyV if you're out there.) that even bereft and grieving, this sort of behavior and posting does NOT serve our cause at all.  I don't want anybody smacked or flamed, but everybody has to understand what is helpful, what is difference of opinion and polite dissent, and what is purely disruptive and undermining.  And that's all the rant I have to say about this.

On a more positive and constructive note--and really in the Other Ideas category--we should reach out additionally not just to gamers but also to fans of the comicbook and superheroes genres

Other than moving this post (which I copied in full to a different thread as well as posting a LONG rant to the Grieving thread I started), what steps would you recommend about this Quinch?  IIRC, you were part of the original Team Wildcard: TF Hail Mary LFM.  Count me as "more."  You can't add me to the team 'cause the TF has started, but I'm a lurking player and willing (nay eager) to slide you Inspirations or any other buffs I have.  Let me know how I can help.  Saving CITY OF HEROES is infinitely more important me than being "right" or winning some "flame" war.  (See: Phyrric Victory:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrrhic_victory ) :gonk:

Yeah, I pretty much shut up as soon as you pointed the first part out, because you're right and I missed it until you mentioned it.

The second is an excellent point, though. We have plenty of people in the community who have told their stories of how the game was actual therapy, but War Witch is the key. She can't write, though. It has to be the people who were helped by the game rallying around Melissa, for just the same reasons VV can't write.
I wouldn't use the word "replace," but there's no word for "take over for you and make everything better almost immediately," so we just say "replace."

Hopefully we will be getting more media attention. I have Posted Emails with Links to the VV Korean times interview, Press release response of ours to NCSOFT'S announcement and our web site and a nice mid length message to go with it. Nothing too long just a little under one page.

I have sent them to The Mail Tribune the Newspaper here where I live, KRDV News, NBC News, Game Informer, PC Magazine got a tweet since I could not find a place to send a letter as well as NY Times and I am starting to run out of ideas lol.

This question is probably best directed to Rae and others with media expertise, but it seems like we've gotten good coverage on this in scope and sympathy.  I find it hard to imagine that those working in the industry are unaware at this point either about CoH Sunset or the fans.  Even without hard data or specifics (thanks, but I don't need citations), I feel confident the dev team has been networking with their colleagues in the industry about this since 8/31.  My question is simply, what next?

My question is simply, what next?

In general:

For a story to stay in the news, it needs to be 'new'.

We need to look for new angles to keep our story out there. Whether it's things like Heroes and Villains and the Phoenix Project, or the Real World Hero drive, the Disney pitch..it needs to be something they haven't heard from us before.

This might be a good time for the testimonial people try get their stories out there about how they're coping (or not) now the lights have been turned off in COH. It's a great time to try for some more celeb support, to give the petition a good push (we've been at 21,000 sigs for a while, but at 25,000 or 30,000 it's another news story.)

Do something heroic - donate some time to charity, raise money, dress as your character and volunteer at a soup kitchen. We need to vote on the 'best community' and 'best MMO' polls, because that'd be another great story if a /closed/ MMO takes those titles.

We need to donate as much as we can to Real World Hero, because we need to show that the community has stayed strong, heroic and supportive after the sunset.

Right now, if you could start looking at new angles, the bits that haven't been reported on it'd be a great start on keeping the pressure on, press-wise. We need to keep up the noise on Twitter/Facebook/Google and in blogs. We need to be commenting on the articles and showing people there is a real interest in this story.

For Hail Mary, specifically: Keep sending the letters to Disney. Encourage your friends, other gamers to get involved, spread the word any way you can  (because, really, the press release I REALLY want to write is: Disney says yes!)

Team Wildcard have already started discussions about who our next target will be, if we don't get Disney's attention, but obviously we need to give Disney a decent amount of time to set any wheels in motion and do their own investigations. The last thing we want to do is start an accidental bidding war or something ;)

That's off the top of my head. Does it help? :)

I checked the petition on the morning of December 1st. It's closed.
I wouldn't use the word "replace," but there's no word for "take over for you and make everything better almost immediately," so we just say "replace."

The interview should be published Monday.

While still fighting the good fight I decided to do something a little extra.

I am sending a request to Guinness Book of World records to see if they would give us the world record for largest spread attempt to save a Community and computer game.

Sending the propor links, telling them what part I have taken and what the four main guys who started it all are attempting, the disney idea. Links to the best video, Korean times letter and our main web site area showing our press releases.

So Let's hope that Titan Network and the world wide players of City of Heroes can get in the book!

If we do...Than the mark we leave in our wake will be much larger than anyone elses.

I really do not think any other group has fought this hard to keep an online community for as hard or as long or been so spread out in its attempts to save it than we are!

OK - it's now 1 week gone and I'm looking through some of these posts so I can send out links to the YouTube Geek and Sundry team to maybe raise some awareness and get a bit of love from those geeks with a platform to spread some news...and I'm finding it hard to gather all the newest links that are not old, stale or repeats of other stuff.

Does anyone have a definitive list of all the various posts, news stories, coverages, etc?

thanks!

I checked the petition on the morning of December 1st. It's closed.

i can confirm this as well, the petition is closed at 21845 signatures

it probably closed because the amount of incoming signatures had slowed too much

While I know TF Hail Mary's main thrust and effort is on getting physical letters written and sent, would it hurt to open a new "Disney, please let us send you money to play City of Heroes" petition?

We've been sending physical mail pleas for a couple of weeks, now. While I absolutely think we should continue (they're on my Christmas card list :)), is it time to add electronic contact? DI has a Facebook page, but I'm having a little trouble finding a contact email or form. Chalk it up to not having my first cup of coffee, yet.

Alternatively, would there be any benefit to adding worldwide locations to our mailing list, for those of us not residing in the US? Alty Monkey's generous offer notwithstanding, of course. I'm not suggesting we change direction, but perhaps add directions.

Hell, plonk at the DCUO and CO forums if you feel like it.

As Vikki said in a couple places, it is unlikely that Disney will come to a decision before January.  The Holidays are coming and a large corporation moves slowly.  And it is probably in our favor that they mull it over for a bit anyways.

The best thing that could happen is for people to be discussing it.  The higher our profile, the more Disney has a reason to seriously consider the offer.

Visibility is our best ally.

Guys and gals,

A lot of these articles that were written in support of our cause can be a very intricate in catching the eyes of potential buyers.

The more articles there are (and even more responses to each article) only increases our chances of reeling in a new buyer.

Some of these articles haven't been responded to since DECEMBER! Let's not let this cause dwindle away and allow NCSoft to kill off our wonderful game and community.  So many people are sitting around wishing for CoH/CoV to return but  don't really feel that there is much they can do about it.

WRONG!!!
***Reply to these articles (all documented by Quinch on the first post) to keep the fire burning and the cause alive! The more activity we showcase, and the more comments we pile up, the greater our chances become! And the less we do, the less chances we have.

We can all do this guys, and there's no excuse if we really want to save CoH! Let's pull through and all start commenting and spreading the word!

Uhm ... hate to disagree here but I'd like to point out the following:

a. These articles that haven't been responded to since December ... If they were only written in November/December, I don't think it's doing much good to continuously be posting to what's effectively old news.

b. The community has been posting to lots, and lots, and lots of current/recent articles. So, I'm not sure where your sources are coming from, but if you take a look in the City of Heroes section of Titan, you'll see almost every article that has come out over the past few months, and the community's overwhelming response. We're  not sitting back by any means.

c. We need to be strategic, and careful to not just go wildly posting to some article that was written in December, just because. That'll do nothing but garner the opposite of support, if any attention at all, and will really only serve to anger the authors of said articles. We don't want to make enemies out of the press.

d. I think we're doing things on the right track. We're keeping an eye on current news. We're responding to current news. As far as continuously posting to places ... We're reserving that activity for NC's facebook pages :)

my 2 cents

yup. but over all not sure if going back to december will help.

One thing I did notice is that there seem to be more support in "fighting" distractors in articles that have been viewed as "give up all hope" by some than ones that are covering things for things that many say they support. I see more comments about COH and how it's gone and stuff on the recent GW1 going into maintence mode than actual show of support of the article that is covering the Plan Z.

As mentioned, all the articles are mostly posted here on this forum, just like the GW1, the nine reason one, the move on ones, and even the plan z one, but seems people are quick to jump on the articles that have not much to do with COX bellowing that COX is missed and there is a plan Z and people dont understand, and there is alot of support for the projects on other articles like the GW1 but remain silent when it's time to actually show that support they speak of on every NCSoft article, and any game articles having to do with closing a mmo, and ncoft facebook while ignoring the articles where a show of force is very proper.

People want them to cover COX and the plans and complain when the articles are not exactly positive and show up in force to express that thought, but here is a plan z article basically ignored. Great way to show appreciation for a media outlet that is showing support. But i'm sure when they write another article about moving on, many people wll flood that article like they did the rest again and wonder why people keep saying move on already, it's dead, there is no bringing it back. We say one thing, but by massively alone, it looks like we dont even support our own stuff, which we should show more support and will be very important when the kickstarter point arrives. If I was outside and knew about the plan Z games in the making from the outside and came across massively, I would think that it's another small game that isnt going anywhere and a buch of hot air as it seems the people that say they support it greatly couldnt even be bothered to leave a comment like they usually do and thus must not be important and thus wouldnt contribute a single dime to it.

This has been my impression. We have trailed off in just the simple "thank you" comments that we were pushing for when the thread was originally started over on the Save Paragon side. Most of what I'm seeing is rebutting misconceptions or downright contesting the central thesis of the articles. Most times, it isn't done in a negative way, but we are giving the impression of being more argumentative. Granted, most times, we're not prefacing any comments with "I'm from Titan Network, and..." I don't think I've seen more than half a dozen comment posters even identify themselves as being members here, but this has become the symbolic home for any and all efforts to revive the game, so it comes back on us, even if the poster has no ties to us.

The biggest little thing that we can all do for ourselves is go back to being positive. Every article should be posted so we can all go and say thank you. Even if we disagree, we should be saying thank you. We don't have to agree with everything (or anything) the author has to say for it to still be a lucid, cogent position.

And, to the points raised by Eliot in the latest MMR, is there really as much animosity between the two Plan Z teams? They certainly appear to play nice, here.

Yeah not much animosity here but on other websites there is like in CO foeum for example and even on the COX channel. On the forum and the cox channel, there is more than just a few that said they don't want anything to do with H&V because of *insert reason dealing with GG * and only support TPP. Some going as far as saying they wish one will fail. Then there is others mostly on the cox channel that blame TPP for the split and support only H&V. And some of discussions are heated. And some say both are pipe dreams and anyone support them is "crazy".

And of course the speculations surrounding how both projects came be.

Remember we are dealing with web and things that are said and reactions to the projects is also taken into account. Here we know its fairly decent here but out there and what people say ya think they at war with each other.

That why showing positive support for these articles because the perception is that its all about cliques and warring with other cliques.

Like how people think anyone that speaks against ncsoft have to be a paid shill when probably 99% of them probably nothing to do with ncsoft. Same concept. When only time cox or save cox or the projects is brought up is in arguementive  confrontational rude manner, then many think that "oh another one of those crazy angry Titan network members jumping down someone else throat again as usual. I hate ncsoft but I don't want mix those guys and get called a paid shill because I think yellow is good color and they like red" when many times its no one associated with titan but many are that rant rave but quiet on the positive stuff. They know who they are and hope they think about the effects of their actions.

We wanted media attention we got it for the projects. Let's act accordingly. Remember that negative PR thing against ncsoft and that talk about pr and negative pr? People forget the rules of pr applies for ustoo. We might be supers but not immune to pr good and bad pr.

TPP have always tried to be respectful to all of the various spiritual successor projects - we know exactly how much time, energy and work it takes to be involved on projects of this size.

Our visions may not have matched up, but it doesn't mean we can't respect the effort and work of the other projects. We try to treat them with the respect that we would like people to show us, for what we're trying to achieve.

It's sad (although people being people, perhaps inevitable) to hear that people are still yelling at each other over this. Particularly when the various projects settled their differences and moved on from this some time ago :-/

In re-reading the article, it looks like he was aiming his comment more at the community at large than members of either team. I guess I kind of misunderstood that bit, but it is a good point. I'm with Rae: this animosity is sad and more than a little pointless. On the up side, I am glad to not see it really flaring up anywhere on Titan.

I could be wrong, but I think the MMO Gaming Universe still knows that we are here as a potential player-base of fans eager to resume our adventures and characters in City of Heroes.  The evil daydreaming side of me would like to hire Clint Eastwood to pry the IP from the cold, dead hand of NCSad, but that is merely my sick fantasy, though bwahaha! it brings me a certain sense of comfort and amusement.  (I believe the technical term is Revenge fantasy.)  Pardon my digression.  Anyway, I feel certain that as long as we are here on Titan, apart from anything else that alone is sufficient to keep us in the consciousness of the Gaming Industry.  Surely some interested parties are sooner or later going to want to acquire the IP from NCSad, though of course when, and who, and for how much, etc. I haven't a clue, since the neighbor's dog ran off with my tin foil hat and both the Magic 8 and crystal ball are hazy.  (But then even the messages in my fortune cookies lately have been vague!  And, yes, much of the preceding is intended as humor, other than Keeping Hope Alive 'cause I do believe in time we  will prevail and have game back.)  Here, maybe one of you will get better results than I do http://www.ask8ball.net/   :P

Re: The Phoenix Project (TPP) and Heroes & Villains (H&V), I am perhaps a remiss fan in not keeping up to date on the progress of either Plan Z project--though I do appreciate the talented CoH Fans who are working diligently to bring us a spiritual successor to our favorite MMORPG.  As I have offered before, I expect one or both of the Plans Z to launch prior to NCSad parting with the IP--that I suspect will require a near complete "regime change" among the executive suits of a formerly mostly well liked and respected game publisher.   It seems to me that both H&V and TPP are doing fine and haven't had more than that initial hiccup or two when discovering the extent of their artistic and/or game design differences.  (Note: It's entirely possible I am not being astute and perhaps turning a purblind eye, but why stir up trouble when there hasn't been any, other than perhaps not getting off to the very best start when it became clear two visions, hence two Plan Z projects and two teams was the way to go?)  Thank you again, CoH fans and Titans, involved both in TPP and H&V!!!!  And Thank You, Rae, and Team Wildcard as well as all the fellow CoH fans here on Titan.   :)

I had absolutely no intention of aiming my comment at any team or person... Like dwturducken said, it was meant for our community as a whole to get out there and spread our desire and cause of reviving CoH/CoV.  And like JaguarX said, we should show more support of our own cause.  An inspiring post to get our community (myself included) to put the word out to the public together was my only goal.

And Tanklet,
yes, there is a great deal of discussion on the titan forums under City of Heroes.  That is great! But not many non CoXers check our forums.  And I realize those articles from my previous message were old, you're right.  But looking deeper, I was expressing my personal belief of the importance of our community pounding new articiles about CoH's close with our comments and support.  I'm not against anyone here, and I'm only doing what I can to help.  I just wanted to express the importance of our support TOGETHER in these articles.  Otherwise it's as if we don't even care about our own cause.  Just wanted to clear things up.
