Halloween Event: Attack of the Clones

Hi All!

It's me, Graphite.  You know, that crazy guy who went to NY Comic Con dressed as Statesman.  In case you haven't seen the pics yet, here's the link.

Anyway, back on topic.

I'm hosting a Halloween Party! This Wednesday, at 10 EST in AP33 on Virtue.  But there is one catch... you have to show up in costume.  No, no.  Not your regular hero tights but as your favorite marvel/dc/image/disney/starwars/whatever character.

Some of you may say isn't that against the Terms of Agreement?  Well, yeah... but honestly that is also part of the point.  You might remember a lawsuit years and years ago where Marvel sued NCSoft over the fact that you could create their characters using the rebust character creator and NCSoft won!  However, part of the agreement is that they would police the servers and pervent us the players from making any clones.

Well, if there should EVER be an exception to the rule it should be for Halloween.  Lets dress up, have a few laughs, contact the Cape to spin a few tunes and maybe even scare a few lawyers.  I'll try to come up with some fun games like who can turn into a Rikit Monkey first to pass the time.   See the thing is if we all use an alternate costume slot and our regular player names I techically don't think this is breaking any rules.  After all this is in the spirit of having fun.  You do remember what FUN is right, NCSoft?

Worse case is that the GMs yell at us, maybe lay down a ban or too.  But the can't ban all of us!  Besides, I really don't think their legal department wouldn't like the idea of bringing to public more negitive press as the game goes into its final month of twilight.  I'm up for a game of Chickenman.  Are you?  Please help by spreading the word to all your supergroupmates and real life friends.

Wait, you mean I WASN'T supposed to make a Doctor Strange costume for my ill/kin troller for solo play?  Or a Tick costume for my invul/SS tank?!  Or a Green Lantern or 2 for my bubble/energy def?!  Depending on what is going on on my home server, I may use a transfer or 2 and take a trip to the party for a few minutes.

But do we want to attain the reputation that could be incurred by this? NCSoft could very easily make us all out to be reckless anarchists. Getting banned from the game under the guise of having 'nothing to lose', when we're fighting so hard to make sure there -is- something to lose, this doesn't seem like a good idea.

Partaking in this event would only give NCSoft the ability to point their finger and go: "See this? Players that do nothing but break the rules, attempt to incite legal action out of spite, and just act overall unruly. This is the community that they're rallying so hard to save."

Just saying. This could work against us pretty badly.

What really irks me is that NC got on our badside before the Marvel MMO went live. I wanted an army of us to go into that game, make copyrighted CoH NPC's, and then call up NCsoft to suggest they power up their legal war machine for some well-deserved payback.

I actually have a fairly decent (cartoony graphics not withstanding) clone of Statesman as my primary character on my free CO account.  I'm not sure what this new thing that Marvel is calling an MMO is going to be, since you play one of what I can only assume is any of their licensed characters, with what appears to be no customization or personalization. Kinda hits the opposite end of the creative spectrum from CoH, as far as character creation. I guess, if you can't do it as well, don't do it at all.

Yeah, that's kinda my read.  They call it an MMO, but the description is not at all similar to what we are used to from one. For giggles, I signed up for the beta, citing the couple of times I was picked for closed beta on Issues, but I don't expect anything to come of it.

If you have it, I will be there. Not sure about the legal junk on this, so I'm hoping someone farther up the food chain will weigh in on this, but this is a Single One-time event for Holloween for Heaven's sake. If it gets us all banned then NCSoft has their undies on WAY too tight.  :roll:

Not to mention (But I will anyway), I've seen WAAAAY too many copy-cats and "in poor taste" costumes and names that should have been banned over the years that NCSoft has little standing in this regard anyway.

The GMs over the years in CoX can't police literally every character in the game. They probably escaped notice, not ignored.

The fact nobody reported said names and costumes isn't really the issue. We kinda have it established up here that we intend to waltz in and violate the rules. Logged right here for all to see as premeditated. There simply wouldn't be any excuse we could hide behind.

Don't worry about the trademarked characters... Official Dev run costume contests often included such costumes as well.
Especially for Halloween. I've seen a lot of players use such characters for in-game Halloween costumes.
I understand people being a little overly cautious, given the nature of the sucktastic scenario we find our wonderful game in... however, this really is not a big terrible bad stain on our publicity, hehe... it'd be fun and, again, has absolutely taken place under the devs' watchful eyes.

I'll probably be able to hop on for a bit... and I love the Who will turn into a Rikti Monkey first contest!! Haha!  ;D

I can't really see anyone wanting to report anyone who is at the party, and if NCSoft was really watching the game, they would have known from the get-go that this wasn't the game that should've been shut down.  So personally I think it's fairly low-risk, but I also admit I'm not any type of lawyer or have much knowing in the ways of the laws as it pertains to this.
