This needs help!: NC Style (Brainstorming and production)
« on: October 10, 2012, 05:09:42 AM »
So, I've had this great idea to make a parody song of Gangnam Style called NC style.  The video would be performed by someone in a Yongary/Godzilla outfit wearing sunglasses and a bandana with NCsoft on it.

I've hit a bit of a snag in trying to think up lyrics, which is why I'm asking for ideas right now (and if you can think of lyrics on your own just from this idea, you know, that's awesome).  And after that's done, I'll need some help in turning it into a proper video.

Some small background info on Gangnam style for those that are unaware: Gangnam style is a parody video.  He's making fun of people who like to pretend they have class when they don't and probably the district itself (Gangnam is a wealthy district in korea). The lyrics are a guy claiming he has Gangnam style (like the people who live in the district), bragging about how awesome he is, and talking about the kind of girl he wants.  The video has situations that at first glance look classy, then when you pull back show something pathetic.  Like the opening seen that looks like he's on a beach, then it pulls back to show he's in a playground. Or just acting like he's great in a pathetic situation, like dancing in a parking garage with garbage flying around.  Or acting inappropriately, resting his head on a stranger in a sauna (while stranger looks at him like WTH ARE YOU DOING).  Treating a bath like a swimming pool. Singing in a closeup like is shown in rap videos, then it zooms out and shows he's on a toilet.  Also there's a cameo by another star of some sort, that's the elevator scene.

To sum up: likely to keep in the spirit of the song, we would have NCsoft (the person in a godzilla suit), acting very important but being shown to be ridiculous/not as powerful as it thinks.

So, small list of things that will be needed to make this parody a reality:

1: Lyrics.  I'm having trouble coming up with lyrics beyond the initial idea of NC style.

2: Scene ideas, and arrangement.

3: Actually producing the video

So, some ideas are needed, and some help in making the video, most likely.  If you have an idea? SHARE IT!  Don't just shoot it down yourself. This is still the brainstorming phase after all.

At my current level of video editing I probably can't do anymore than splicing/cutting bits of recorded video together and fusing it with the music, after it's recorded.  That may or may not be sufficient.  I'm willing to be the idiot dancing in a yongura/godzilla costume, though I don't know where I'd get/acquire one. Or how much it would cost. If you're in the Chicago area and happen to have one, know where to get one, that'd be great.  I'm also willing to sing the song.  I like to think I have a decent voice.

And to kick off with some ideas I've had:
One scene could close up to look like NCsoft is breathing fire, then the camera backs off and it shows NCsoft is sideways and the fire is coming from a lawn torch.
Closeup, NCsoft is burning a town or a hero or something, then the camera backs up and shows it's a model (and maybe not even really on fire).
Elevator scene: NCsoft between the legs (Like Psy in the video during the elevator scene) of someone wearing a Bobby Kotick (infamous CEO of activision, known for saying things like he wants to suck the fun out of making games) mask, or post edited with Kotick's face

Lyrics: NCSoft talking about how important it is and the games it likes to burn?  I'm still not sure on what the real content should be.

Anyway, share your ideas, and if you're willing to lend any expertise to creating it please say so!  I think this idea is great, but it's worthless if no video ends up coming out of it.  I want to see this turned into a real video, somehow.

Well, I'm still trying to roll ideas around in my head for this.  Anything that would help me look at things from another angle would be appreciated.  Having the original in a different language makes it harder than a normal song parody, with something in the same language I can just look at the skeleton of what they're singing and replace that with my own.  With this I have to build a new skeleton and have it flow somewhat similar.

Also I've listened to Gangnam Style so much that at this point it keeps running in my head constantly, even when I'm not listening to it.  Maybe I should check out some of the existing parodies to see what they did and maybe get some ideas.

Interesting idea.  The only thing I can add is I have a good friend that I met in CoH a little over 4 years ago who happens to be in a band in the Chicago area.  The band is called Eleven Dollar Life, maybe you've heard of them.  Anyway, maybe they can help you with this.

Got a bluescreen? Superimpose an in-game Paragon City in front of him and have it look like he's setting it on fire?

I have no experience in special effects like that and don't even know where to start.  I don't even have a video camera.  So even if I can finish the lyrics on my own, I WILL need help finishing the video.

I'll be honest I have neither seen nor heard this song but let's at least talk images/concepts.

So if I understand you right its about juxapositions and reveals.

Okay ncsoft mission statement and the graveyard of cancelled games.

The korean concept of open-eyes /perception and their eyes are shut/wearing glasses wth giant eyes while sleeping behind them.

Change of focus frm clarity to garbage or blurr- from a variety of people to the sleeziest ofmen (blade and soul)

The ncsoft vault of money while their foolishness empties it

The stock prices falling, the company crumbling while they are oblivious/don't care

The "exhaustion" of options.  Offers calling, email being sent all offering to buy while tey get "tired" of ignoring it.  People knocking at the door as well as they ignore get "exhausted" from turning them all away.

The burning puppy analogy from another poster on this board (Yes I know I spoke to you this morning on savecoh..sorry long day)

The monster of ncsoft rampaging as arrow after arrow (with labels) hits it until it goes down in flames and all the worlds they hav destroyed rise like a phoenix from he ashes.

Do I have te right concept?

You seem on target.

I've got the background physical notes down, now it is capturing the right feel. It's been awhile since I've played with mixing. If anyone wants to hear my last attempt:

Just had another visual idea:

Our NCSoft-godzilla looking huge and intimidating as it pushes - in the style of pictures of people holding up the leaning tower of Pizza - up a stock market price line (you know, the standard red or blue line that shows price-over-time). Problem, "NCSoftcore Stock" is printed upside-down. Zoom out, and the whole scene, with a stockholder's meeting watching it, is upside-down. Camera rotates right-side-up to show that prices are falling and the NCzilla is actually hand-puppet or action-figure-sized and upside-down.

Or the price line is falling on him and he's trying to hold it off.

Gotta reenact this in somewhere.

Kinda an infamous scene from one of the later zilla films.

Also, if you want to have a little 8-bit fun, there's an old Godzilla game for Nintendo that you could borrow assets from.

Or alternatively, swap some of the assets with alternate ones and instead of a city, have him beating on all the game IP's that NC has killed. And add the sunglasses/bandana to the Godzilla sprites.

I suggest the refrain "oppa gangham style!" be replaced with "NC Softcore porn!"

Have a picture of our 'Zilla screaming at one of the B&S girl's wiggly butts.

Secretly playing CoH on a laptop in the toilet.

My workfile I've titled "NC Softin Style"

While mocking B&S as softcore porn is not bad, the key to a parody is to tell the truth about the subject. Since the subject is NCSoft, and they make far more than B&S, need a grander scope.

Of course B&A's TnA will be of heavy mention I'd imagine.

I posted this in the Call to action music brainstorming idea and never heard back so I filled my schedule up with other gigs. Ill post my qualifications below but I am booked solid for the next 2 weeks producing and recording an album as well as the regular shows I play a week.  I am not looking to charge anyone for this or any other COH related music stuff so don't make your decision to ask for help based on that.

I have an extensive musical training.  I play the Guitar and the Piano and have graduated from CCMC (Colorado Contemporary Music College)
I have access to Ableton, Maschine, Massive, Razor, and several talented musicians in town.
I have training in Music Theory, Sight reading, Rhythm and Melodic dictation, and arranging.
I also have access to a wonderful sound engineer that has very affordable prices.

Feel free to contact me by  PM me on the forums

Send me a email or PM or just reply here and ill see if I can help,  Downix if you wanna send me what you have so far ill see if I can help contribute to the backing track.  The sooner the better, the less I hear the more I book up other things.

Scene idea:

Bunch of MMO boxes on a wall or shelf or something(preferably every one that ncsoft has shut down), ncsoft knocks them over, then cheers and looks proud of himself, maybe stomps on them a bit
Perhaps afterwards ominously eyes a box of guildwars

Ok, first attempt to try lyrics, be kind:

NC Soft's in Style
NC Soft in Style

We make the games for teenage boys to enjoy now
Forget the family fun you just keep on mashing buttons
Our games may shut down by the end of tomorrow
Go enjoy them while they last

Tabula Rasa here
We forged a letter from the boss

Auto Assault here
Killed it because it sucked

Dungeon Runners here
Did not listen to the devs

We killed them all hey
Paragon is next

City of Heroes is a success now
We can't (hey) have that (hey)

It wasn't made in the home country
So we (hey) shut it off (hey)

It can join all the rest in the trash

It's NC Soft's Style
NC Soft's Style

N N N N
NC Soft's in Style
NC Soft in Style

N N N N
NC Soft in Style

Hey, Come and play
N N N N
NC Soft's in Style

Hey, Come and play
N N N N
(Eh eh eh eh eh eh eh)

Comic books for kids we want to play with sex and blood yeah
Avengers and the Dark Knight just a fluke you want to join us don't ya
Stockholders can suck it they don't need their money back now we spent it
Complain and we kickban you

Blade and Soul is here
I give it fourty weeks yeah

Guild Wars classic here
On the chopping block next week now

Guild Wars 2 right here
Dead when the contract ends yeah

They're all dead
So buy em now

Mobile games now are the future
MMO's (hey) must die now (hey)

Only a matter of time now
Before we (hey) shut them down (hey)

So what if that's all of our profit here

It's NC Soft in Style
NC Soft'n Style

N N N N
It's NC Soft in Style
NC Soft'n Style

N N N N
NC Soft in Style

Hey, come and play
N N N N
It's NC Soft in Style

Hey, come and play
N N N N
(Eh eh eh eh eh eh eh )

Profits down now Now idea why now
Baby baby
Our players seem to be leaving us now

Doesn't matter now Another sucker born now
Baby baby
Players just do as we say now

You know what I'm saying

It's NC Soft in Style
Eh eh eh eh eh eh eh
Just stay away
N N N N
It's NC Soft in Style

Hey stay away
N N N N
(Eh eh eh eh eh eh eh)
It's NS Soft'n Style

Ran into this guy on Virtue tonight. Think we can do something with this? (I asked permission and he's cool with it. His bio is even a subtle satire on NCSoft already!)

Well, I plan to go over things a bit more in detail sunday, maybe try to work on my own version of lyrics.  Anyway, just had an expansion of an earlier idea

Lyrics go something like(rhythm/flow prbly need to get worked on for song): I'm burning mmos, sure no one will care
Scene playing during lyrics: closeup, looks like NCsoft is blowing fire, camera zooms out to show fire is from a torch held by a hero

I did start with a color scheme more accurate to the RX-78, but decided it looked boring and threw in more red.  If you need demofiles or costume files for Mobile Suit Gangnam, let me know (dvandom@gmail.com, or I'm on as @dvandom most nights).

I'm not really feeling your lyrics for some reason.  I think it's a bit more overt and less subtle mocking than my nebulous idea of proper lyrics would be.

I'll work on my own version whenever I get some energy back.  Maybe mine will be better, maybe not.

I also noticed when reading the lyrics while listening to the song they don't match the flow.  You would have to say things twice as fast a lot of times to even come close to matching the rhythmic or melodic dictation of the song.  Lyrics don't have to have good grammar its okay to say things like cuz, yall, aint etc etc because these words are short and sweet.  A good way to make sure the words you have are close is listen to the song with a metronome on and listen to the words behind the click if I remember correctly he's singing is a steady flow of 8th notes in 8 bar phrases with some grace notes here and there to speed up his flow.  Its also good to try and find words that match the syllables he is singing with similar feel.  If he says a sharp word (sharp sounding not sharp note) than you want a sharp word to.  For example "POW" is a sharp and bright word you would want to match it with a word of equal sound and feel, words like "Hello" would never come close to match a word like "POW."  That is my two cents on the lyrics and how they should be written, if I have learned anything from being a musician for 10 years though this advice will be ignored and never taken into consideration.

I know I wasnt trying to be mean or even personal and they are very very very common mistakes.  I entered music mode when I typed that which requires being critical.   Lyric writing is hard and you did good but in the music world sometimes you gotta be blunt or you wont be heard.  Nothing personal and good job, its hard to express your self so by all means don't take it personally or give up on even trying,  I thought the lyrics were clever and I liked your ideas but before clever and cool ideas the way it sounds, flows, and feel is the big number 1 and I want this to turn out as good as possible and people almost always hear melodic dictation first, even if they don't know it

P.S Any one who has worked on music has been treated in a simply critical matter but as humans it hard to take things simply as critical so at least you aren't alone we have all been there:)

I began in cinema. I've had my stuff ripped apart so many times, I take it as part of the gig.

I'll go over it with your thoughts, might be able to clean it up some. But if you have any suggestions, grab on!

the way it sounds, flows, and feel is the big number 1

That's what makes making lyrics for this so hard, translating the flow and feel of Korean words into English.

Maybe this can offer some inspiration since it's a parody of Gangnam style in English as well, Romney Style

lol damn they did a really good job on that Romney video.  I think that is a perfect example of how the lyrics should be.  It also brings up a question that I didn't think off.  The beat in that one was slightly different and I am assuming its intentional, is this project going to have the same exact beat as Gangnam Style.  Or is it going to have a slightly different beat like in the above parody?

Both are good just curious what direction this particular parody will go in.

This just turned up on my twitter feed.  ;D
Ok, now I want to scrap what I did and make new lyrics based on this video. This is awesome!

Well, just been starting to get some energy back.  I think that Romney Style video will be very helpful to me.

Anyway, I had an idea that if we can't get a godzilla/yongary costume, a video could be made in CoH reptillian head (monstrous face 6) and reptilian body.  Can't get a bandana or sunglasses onto the model by default though, can it be done through demo editing or other trickery? Would it look decent if it is?  I don't know what's possible with that.

Also I've noticed that the names NCSoft, NCstyle and NC Style are all taken on Virtue.  Or at least listed as unavailable (I could see NCSoft being made an invalid name choice).
