End of double XP

Playing the game 5 minutes ago when an announcement came over saying they were shutting down the server to end the double XP period.

Now, this is major tea leaf reading, but that does seem a bit strange.  Why turn off double XP if the game is definitely shutting in November?  As I say, it's drawing a very long bow, but still.

Knightslayer

Hah, I was just thinking the other day how 3 months of Double XP could be a very bad thing if they DID decide to save the game...
It might be a positive sign, but I still wouldn't read too much into it. (it might as well linked to the whole "We can only run one event at a time" thing.)

YEah, that does seem a bit odd. I thought they were talking about leaving double XP on until the end. Not the only strange thing I've seen lately, either. All this mystic stuff is making my head hurt, I need the servers to come up so I can relog to one of my magic origin characters who isn't bothered by it.

Servers are back up, and as of 0900 ET AP33 is not back on Virtue. Will be interesting to see if someone puts it back.

We can try a flash mob at like 8-9 PM EDT if no one has by then.

There's a rally on Guardian at 6-9pm EST today.

Thanks for the Heads-up on this one. This was our original server back when my wife and I started playing. That's where we stand Vigil with our first 50s. We'll try to make it over there tonight if Real Life allows for it, otherwise we'll be on the City Hall steps holding torches.

Mindscythe

I can't help but be guardedly optimistic. The only logical reason to shut off double xp is if leaving it on would create some future problem. Yup, hope quotient just increased a tad.

It certainly is a move that keeps options open, opposed to saying 'we dont care what you do with it now'.

Glad I got my main to level 50 when I did yesterday!

Still, it's a bit strange that they would turn this off, if they were "going to leave it on til November 30th."

Edit: Confirmed that double XP is indeed off after the server restart.

I wonder if that means anything, or if it's just a server admin who didn't get the memo (after all, they always turn off double XP on the next Monday after enabling it, probably a standard procedure).

Flamazing Sally

No worries...gonna keep playing till the lights go out.  Maybe the double xp will magically re-appear......hey, it could happen!

TimtheEnchanter

That's... interesting.

And I was thinking the same thing about DoubleXP. I've heard before from many that they think PLing via AE drastically shortened the life of the game by making it too easy. If that's true, then perpetual doubleXP would NOT help matters any.

Turning it off again, definitely makes it sound like someone opted to not hit the final nail into the coffin.

Am I correct too that this wasn't a regularly scheduled shutdown?

I'm wondering that as well.

Did the message just say "Admin" as the name? If so, that could be an automated message maybe?

Still though, it seems odd that they wouldn't have gotten the memo to leave it on. I'll cross my fingers but I'm not holding my breath just yet. Keep up the noise and activity. Everyone go to Guardian tonight and hop into Pocket D for dance party shenanigans.

It's back...

AP33 has returned, and is already full of those standing vigil.

Is it possible that anyone logged in to AP33 at the time of server reboot would automatically re-create AP33 when logging back in?  Mere conjecture on my part...

TimtheEnchanter

I was wondering that too, but it seems like there'd be a lot more odd-numbered instances on the servers if that were the cases.

Ampithere

I don't believe that someone logging back into a character that was in AP 33 would restore AP 33. I'm not positive, but I'm leaning towards the opinion that the server drops you into the lowest available instance when you log in.

I seem to recall times in the past when I was logged out in Pocket D 4 or 5 for example and logged back in the next day to find myself in plain old Pocket D.

The Admin message specifically mentioned turning double xp off:

Quote from: Admin[Admin]  Attention! In 30 minutes, City of Heroes and City of Villains will go down for end of double XP event server maintenance. The downtime window is two hours long but maintenance may or may not take that entire time. We will have the game back up as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience!

Make of that what you will.
