Event: Save Paragon base building contest! Anyone can help!
« on: September 08, 2012, 02:36:53 AM »
Since being introduced, one of the most uniquely liberating, pioneering and impressive aspect of Cities has been the ability to create then decorate our bases. It's time to show them off to the world! There have been many base building contests. This is the one to rule them all. Here's what's goin' down.

We're makin' a movie! Take us through those rooms which demonstrate your best, most unique base building efforts accompanied or preceded by exquisitely short statements regarding your sentiments towards the game, that room, what happens in that room, or reason why bases should be preserved. If the general public wouldn't know what your room is just by looking, feel free to write that. You may also place a (non-negative!) message of your choosing for the viewers. Our secondary goal is raising the interest of Minecraft, Second Life and other building game players in Cities.

I think part of the reason Cities has a small population these days is poor marketing. In my opinion, we shouldn't have a potential client pool of 300,000 players. It should be 13,000,000 people who want to make things. That's personal conjecture, though. Bonus points if you incorporate your message into the base by sinking items in to the floor, placing them on a wall, or floating them. Would help cut down on film time. We wanna lotta bing-bang-boom with the shiny things and the impressive stuff!  ;D

Theme: Save Paragon!
Prize: Preservation of their work on the whole should the game survive, and the immortalizing of at least their submitted work should the game perish.
Who wins first prize: Every one.
Who loses: Us if we don't succeed as a whole.
Entry limit: NONE!
Deadline: Friday, October 12.

We need:

1.) Base builders!
2.) People willing to offer up rooms to the effort - not just blank rooms to be decorated, but existing rooms of incredible craftsmanship you feel should be included. If there's a short message you want added, I can show you how (but my account lapsed, so I can't do base work off of Infinity).
3.) People who can film the footage if basebuilders can't submit film themselves.
4.) Some one who's better at video editing than I am, which isn't hard to do. We may need text inserted or overlaid, would be great if you knew that but we'll figure it out.

Thank you all for being you!

Responses go down here. Discuss  ;D

I know of a few good base builders. If we get a video person, this could make a good encapsulation of a feature that is only available in CoH.

@nitro-girl is a stellar base builder. If you can't get in touch with her, let me know - I THINK I can still get into one of my characters in Pillars of Virtue. Their base is great, and her villaingroup base is better. :) (Tell her I sent you, yes, my forum name is my global.)

I'll throw out @Cale Westmarch as another excellent base builder.  His base he built for Sisterhood is amazing, and he's done several more.  I can take people through the Sisterhood one on Liberty any time; just send me a tell at @kurrent.  His three-level loft library is one of the most amazing pieces of work I've seen in a long time.  I've done a few good rooms for my bases, especially our villain base on Triumph, but I'm not in Cale's league.

The most mind-blowing base work I've seen personally was Mr. Hassenpfeffer's.  Not 100% sure on the spelling, but you can find his work in the main forums if you want to check it out.

A spectacular idea!  Zwillinger suggested we should use video sharing on social media and this promotes how a player can create and build social ties, enhancing customer loyalty, to investors.

There is talk about making a youtube channel for the cause, but I'm not exactly sure who is handling it.This would be an excellent addition!

Don't let Kurrent fool you, she does some awesome base building too. She can also give a tour of her own base for The Sisterhood of Villains on Triumph.

Not throwing you under the base, just giving you a shout out for the awesome work you do! :-)

While we're at it, in line with the "in game advertisements" thread, I suggest somebody looking for inspiration create a "retail store" in their base to show off the potential of already-extant modeling stuff. Obviously, if you can do as well as I am sure some of you can with that, a few purpose-designed "retail store" items would make it not just easy but fun and attractive for, say, Amazon Book Store or a Target Online Store (as examples).

Also, as just a personal dare to see if the fans can do it: a movie theater.

A friend of mine has a near-completed mall built. Stores, food court, movie theater. I think the department store is still a WIP, though.

Awesome. Make sure they get it into this movie!

We can use some of this to try to show potential investors how the game could be used to turn ever-more profit, if we can get NCSoft to part with the IP. And the heavier-hitting our potential investors, the more likely said parting will be.

Are you saying you want footage taken WHILE the bases are being built, or just a walkthrough of the finished product?

I'm far from an expert base builder, but the niche I made for our Monster Hunters Club on Liberty is decent work (robotics lab, dojo hall, trophy room, etc.).  I'm unclear from the OP how the base footage is being collected, though.

Heh ... somebody want video?  So far Bright and I have collected about three TERABYTES of fraps movies.  We have mothership raids, incarnate trials, tips missions, task forces, Hamidon raids, base tours, giant monster fights, rampaging masterminds, sneaky stalkers, the entirety of the Dark Astoria incarnate content, and quite a bit more.  If someone wants footage of cool in-game stuff, I probably have a good sample.  I've no idea how to use it productively, though.  It isn't helpful for me to post a thousand individual minutes of clips to my own tiny FB audience.

Somebody needs to do a demorecord in a base as its being altered and see if it updates properly. No idea if there's commands in there to capture that information since demos seem to expect maps to be static.

You can demorecord a base (it looks like a tangled mess of text in the file, but Codewalker and Guy Perfect mentioned that the base structure can be extracted from that - including storage contents), but I don't know what happens to that definition if something in the base changes while being recorded.

A friend of mine pointed this out to me, so... Here my first post here on Titan Network!

My base has, literally been a WIP for years, but has only recently started to come together (being a one-person SG for so long, the Prestige gain was slow. x.x Thank god for the friends I made that started helping me on the project...) I'm not sure if it will be finished before November 30th
I don't consider myself an expert, by any stretch of the imagination, but I am proud of what I have built, and would love to show it off to anyone that would like to see it.

Edit: Oh yeah... Might help if you knew how to contact me in-game... @Naomi Shinjo on Virtue. Drop me a mail anytime, and I'll get back to you.

I have a couple of bases on Virtue that I could offer up... but I'd need someone to come in and fly around for any demofiles. My old computer doesn't have the best graphics.

edit to add: @Siberian Spring any time after 8pm PT M-Th or anytime at all on Sat/Sun.

Liberty Manor, the base of the Vanguard of Liberty on Virtue Server, is technically open to the public. It's just a matter of finding a member to lead you in. I'm available for requests to tour it, if anyone wishes.

I agree that CoH has a strong foundation in creativity and customization - better than any MMO out there. One of my personal draws to the game is base building. My husband Vynsint and I cherish our supergroup base, Section Eight (Infinity), which has taken us over 5 years to construct.

Other than our friends and our toons, our base we consider a most prized possession. Its like a our heart - its why we continue to run in SG mode at level 50 (must... have... more prestige!) - and it will really hurt to have it torn from us in November. :'(  But you'll bet you tookus that I'll be base editing all the way to the end! I still have 2 rooms to finish and I'll be damned if they remain empty by the time the sun sets.  ;)

I'm glad there's a way to demorecord the base (still have to try it) and we've been taking lots of screenshots.

I finally posted some base pix on the CoH forums on the base construction thread:

http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=126358&page=81

But yes, in the end we are hurting in the marketing department. It's odd to see commercials for WoW, and other games. I've yet to see anything promoting for our beloved game prior to it being cast in a dying light. We can't just coast on our previous awards or word-of-mouth anymore. This game still has so much to offer!

I wonder sometimes... If they just would've let the Devs release i24 - it seemed like it had much to give to all levels of play... I'm sure we would've seen participation numbers go up - making it more profitable. People were already extending their subs and buying extra points in anticipation to i24! Consider the sales pitch - to offer up the game, right after releasing a major issue - therefore guaranteeing a strong customer base for the next owner for at least the next 2 sales quarters. - It baffles me...

But lets try anyway, and get some more of the creative types out there that are looking for a quality MMO that you can build not only your base, or your own missions, or costumes and characters... but build strong communities and lasting friendships.

Thank you Obs for this thread. Vyn and I would like to offer Section Eight for the promotional purpose of attracting more players to saving our City of Heroes. If anyone would like to take a tour and record some footage, feel free to poke us on Infinity - @Vynsint and @Vyolit. We're weekend warriors, but we'll be watching this thread too.

Thanks all!

I'm in a VG and an SG that both have pretty impressive bases. Particularly my favorite is the indoor park of my SG's base, which only just got completed in the past couple of weeks.

The SG and VG TimtheEnchanter is referring to are the Dauntless Reverie, around since the beginning, and its players "redside" VG Anathema, formed after the release of City of Villains.  Both bases are the result of years of hard work by a number of base-builders, sharing a vision and enormous creativity.  We'd be very glad to give base-tours to anyone who'd like to demorecord and add our bases (The Place) for the Dauntless Reverie, and "The Warrens" for Anathema, to this movie.  You can contact the officers at:  @Rhianwen (Nyght-shade),  @MDanger (Velvet Soul), and/or @Wei Yau (Kassai).

I also have a "personal" RP base, a small and cozy home apartment for Nyght-shade, which is an interior reflection of one of the brownstone buildings overlooking the Boardwalk in Talos, and would be glad to show that off as well.

I've got all the decorating sense of a Vogon prostetnic, BUT - I do have a private supergroup with around ten million prestige banked that I'm willing to volunteer to anyone who wants to use the base to showcase their talents and CoH's basebuilding potential. Throw me a tell to @Quinch if you're interested.

Any idea how much prestige you need to finish?  I have an absurd amount of inf banked up that could be burnt for prestige.  Would like to see what you have so far first though.  My schedule is fairly open, just figure out a time we can meet.

It's also possible that some other marketeers might be able to give up some billions in the name of helping people finish up awesome bases.  So for anyone else reading, if you have a partially built base and still need more prestige to finish, post something.

I just checked and I have 14 billion inf on my marketeer/inf storage characters, which I think translates into 28 million prestige?  I don't know how much base building power that is.

I am willing to burn my entire fortune for a bit of extra game saving help, though.

Angelus Animi's base has an awesome aquarium: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/37952257/AABase.cohdemo

There are some cool rooms in this base: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/37952257/SABase.cohdemo

By the way, my crowd script works with bases, so you can use it for custom posing or camera movement.

I can do video editing work if nobody else steps up to the task.

The one thing I've never understood about base-building ... how do you end up with floating items?  I eventually learned simple stacking with desks and such, but the editor wouldn't let me remove the support item, so I couldn't even create a two-level ramp without having a silly collection of desks underneath the upper row.

That caveat prevented me from achieving some of the arrangements I wanted in my Monster Hunters base.

I don't know what you used to have to do, but since a month or two ago, you can hold the control and shift keys to move items vertically and rotate them.

As of late last year, you can move elements up and down without the need for the magic desks.  Same update also gave us the ability to rotate to angles other than 0/90/180/270.

That method of building up's never worked for me. :(

The other way is to use floor tiles and safes.

One thing you have to do is place the item first, then use 'Shift' to move vertically, 'Ctrl' to move horizontally on the same plane, and 'Alt' to rotate. But these don't work while placing an item, only after it's been placed.

A lot of the base builder do some really remarkable things, compared to what they do, I'm a tinkerer.

I've been putting it off, but I'll try to get demorecords of my two main virtue bases: Silver Aegis and Hero Force - Delta Destroyers.

The latter has an 800 seat auditorium if you want to use that for a movie theater.

The missus (@chase white) and I (@des tructive) have done some nice setups for "urban" bases, including streets with houses on them, a bus, etc. We're on EU time, though, so it might be best to arrange for a meeting via message here.

Also, you might want to shout into the "Base Builders Inc." global channel, and the facebook group. There's always a lot of people ready to show off their stuff there. Try to get your fingers on @war base and @eldormain. They're just wow.

Got a base on Protector that is on the biggest possible plot size available. I think I'm a decent (tho not necessarily great) basebuilder, so if you guys want access to go film it your more than welcomed. Anything to help the cause!

Tangential note: for base builders who haven't heard about it, because demorecords now have free camera control, you can now save your bases permanently with demorecords: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=297561 .  Even after the game shuts down, you will still be able to play those demorecords back and give people tours of your base or make videos of it.

Also, to address an earlier question, you can't demorecord base editing.  Well, you can, but on playback the base will remain static: you'll just fly around apparently doing nothing.

I have several fabulous bases, but alas I am not a person who can video record the bases. If someone can do this, please contact me at @Potato-Head (in-game) or hgcoco@yahoo.com

Since we can now demorecord bases and do those wonderful fly-throughs with the free camera, it seems that anyone that is unable to film their own base could still send a demorecord file to a videographer for filming. That makes it so much easier to include everyone that wants to participate and doesn't require everyone to coordinate log-in times for filming.

If anyone wants to video The Wonder League SG base on Defiant server, give me a shout in game @Electro Kitty or  @EK

The Wonder Base has taken me around 5 years to build, we have the usual rooms...teleport/workshops/hospital etc but the rooms i like most are the ones hidden round the back...Frankenstein's laboratory, the terra cotta army room, tennis court, church, view out to space, bowling alley, harbour, beach bar and volleyball room.

The editor has infuriated me and i've taken many breaks along the way, but something always draws me back to create more.

Such a shame all the hours of work will be lost soon :(

Any advice on gaining a boat load of prestige over the next month?  I've only gotten 60,000 prestige over the past three years of playing (less than an hour a week though).  I'd love to try my hand at base building, but have only had the opportunity to build a three room "micro-base" with nothing in it.

A larger boatload of Inf? You can convert Inf to Prestige at a very terrible rate (1mil Inf = 2k Prestige).

How do I enter this contest? You were really unclear how we get the base videos to you. Do I demorecord? real video? What, it's really frustrating especially since late entry and I have no idea how to get the video for you to see. Am I the only one confused here?

I think we need to pick up the ball on this one if it's still going to be done. The person who posted it hasn't even logged into the boards since the 3rd, and considering the deadline is tomorrow, I think it's safe to assume he/she isn't coming back.

Ok so we need some guidelines.  Where people are submiting their videos and in what format or if it will just be the raw demorecord.  Should we also push back the deadline since there seems to be more intrest?

Sounds good.  Now about the video's themselves, do they need to be a finished product with the description on them or raw.

I'd much prefer demofiles, no matter who does the final compilation. Sending bulky raw videos is just a burden nobody should be stuck with the task of sending, or having an ftp space big enough to hold it all.

Wish I knew more of what the original vision was. Sounds like it was meant to be both a contest, and an opportunity to show off one of CoH's unique features, almost like a proposal to potential buyers.

Just thinking out loud here but what about starting with shots of the zones, game play ect and how it became inspiration for the architect's within the game.  Those who built cities within cities.  Then showcase them base by base.

Maybe show an empty room and what it could become.
Mind you the empty and finished room would not have to be the same...

Demorecod does not capture edits in progress, it would have to be done with fraps or bandicam.

Ugh, I'm not even sure if that can be done then. Doesn't everyone get teleported back to the entrance when something gets moved?

Only if whatever is getting moved gets dropped on their head.  Safest way would be for the builder to be the one running the cam.

I'm looking into the idea of at least providing a web page where people can upload demorecords of their base. This will at least give us an archive to share from and if there is to be a contest, submissions could be judged by viewing the demorecords. Now that we can freely move the camera while within a demorecord using F2, the demorecord doesn't need to be long. Just step into your base, stand at the door, do a quick demorecord for 5-10 seconds and you're done.

Even if a contest doesn't happen, I'd love to have an archive to share so we can take those base tours we missed out on because we were so busy building things ourselves. I'll set something up by early next week unless someone beats me to it. :)

You can also make a stop-motion version, starting and stopping a demo each time a piece is added or moved?

{though it would probably be better to have one person building and the other recording}

I wish the playback of demo-recordings, or even in-game for that matter, allowed for the kind of camera control that I used here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hri0Zv954bw

I'd love to be able to do features of bases like this, but alas, the mouse control is twitchy (even when I knock down the Razor sensitivity) and movement has only one speed: too fast.

I found a great, free video capture program. It also comes with a file converter and video editor. I'm still playing around with it, recording footage of my base. There's quite a few bells and whistles for a free program. Seems like a good one to share...
