Please excuse me while I schadenfreude my ass off.

Excused!

I posted a comment on there.  I hope the muckity-mucks see it.  Turjan is right about CoH not being really visible in Korea, which I think is one of our problems.  Still, the article mentions that investors are questioning their expansion abroad.  Gee, I wonder why?  Someone else pointed out to me the part about Korean gamers being capricious, how that's kind of telling in that they think that western gamers are probably capricious.  *sigh...  I really don't think they have a clue about the western gaming market.  Not that Koreans nor westerners are all one monolithic hive mind, but you have to adapt your business and products to overseas markets, something that NCsoft seems woefully poor at.

Rumor I've heard is that NCwest and NCsoft are sometimes at odds with each other over just such issues, and NCwest is forced to defer to corporate HQ in Korea.  If that's true, methinks that TJ and company really need to let NCwest actually manage the products in the western market and keep their noses out of it.

Anyway, great catch on that article, I posted a comment at the bottom.  They limit you to 150 characters (gah, really?), but hopefully I got the point across.

I wanted to comment on the obvious ties between games like Blade and Soul that completely objectify women as mere sex toys, and another story - http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/world/2012/11/182_124524.html - on the endemic problem of sexual crimes and abuse, but the crummy script wouldn't let me log in.

See also http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2012/11/511_124532.html for more reasons to think Korea really doesn't need more teaching of the objectification of women, but some good family values (that don't include incest).  No wonder CoH failed in Korea ... they couldn't understand why Statesman wasn't screwing Ms Liberty.

Please don't make generalizations like that. I understand you're upset with NCSoft but do you really have to take a shot at all Koreans?

The US has its own issues with rape, there's one study that says 1 in 5 women have been sexually assaulted.

And then there's the problem with rape in the military, where the military covers it up/blames the victim rather than actually prosecuting the offender.

That's not to excuse any problems they have, but the US still has progress to make of its own.  I do wonder how it breaks down by state, though.

As much as I am against Over sexurlizing of women, and Deeply against real life abuse of any kind.  I be against tying games to social problems.  To many groups trying that already one reason we have a rating system now for Games.  There are way to many think that Games or entertainment of any kind causes behavior.  The Comic book industry was almost destroyed because of such views, movies often fight the mind set.  The Gaming companies are now the latest target.  No need to add more fuel to that fire.

I been physically and sexually abused there is no way in hell I support any kind of mistreatment of others.  Even today about 25 years later some days I can't stand to be touched at all.  That said I have downloaded the perverted Mods for skyrim and have my own Game harem.  I am not a pervert ... I just play one in games.

Actually, scores of studies have proven that exposure to graphic images does lower sensitivity, and surprisingly quickly.  Years ago (more than I care to recount) I was employed as a Learning Resources Technician - because Media is an excellent tool for education, (and indeed, propaganda) and is known to affect learning very effectively and efficiently.  What one sees gives one the feeling of experiencing it, and we are all geared to learn from experience.

Many corporations use training videos.  Most distance learning involves media.  The armed forces and emergency services also use video in training, and more to the point, we count time spent on simulators as some of the most effective training of all.

The correct counter-argument is that we are not only exposed to negative learning, because games and movies also show heroism, love, determination, resolve, etc.  Mostly, the 'good guys' win.  Again, there is a known correlation between media depiction of relationships, and what is expected, and what people will then seek in relationships.  The only argument that holds no water whatsoever is to argue that the media does not affect attitudes among those exposed to it.

Of course, given that 'the media' are the ones making a living from the media, they pretty much give no attention to the studies and evidence against it, except very occassionally to highlight a particularly weak piece of research that they can show being argued against.  Go direct to university websites though and you will find hundreds of studies that all showed a strong and direct correlation between what we see, and how we feel.

Always knew I was an odd ball.  My attraction to real life women is counter to my game taste.  I'm not interested in normal porn because I find it distasteful.  Hentai or cartoons I see as an art form same with games so sexual images there is fine.  I'm almost A-sexual in life.

It could also be said that for a TEEN rated game most behavior is established and a culture that devalues women would make games that do so as well.

http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/21/a-mild-mannered-reporter-the-cost-of-closing-city-of-heroes/

...And it seems that the trolls are either monitoring our boards here or otherwise looking for these articles.  Another_Fan got banned from the official forums, and now he/she/it is posting comments on this article.  You know, for someone who professes not to care about City of Heroes, they sure are spending a LOT of time worrying about it.

Still, what they don't seem to realize is that all of their efforts are adding eyeballs to the sponsors of the site.  As controversy breaks out and fighting-by-comment-posts breaks out, it drives up revenue at the site and encourages the administrators of those sites to write more articles like that.  I almost feel like I should thank Another_Fan and the others there for helping our cause.

All that AND good coverage of what's going on from Eliot...  Double score!

Not that I can get into the head of a unicorn (pointy horn in the way), but thanking someone for their unicorning aiding our cause might make them bugger off.
I wouldn't use the word "replace," but there's no word for "take over for you and make everything better almost immediately," so we just say "replace."

Another_fan is rabidly obsessed with hatred for Titan. His posting history on the official forums seems to indicate he had a running feud with certain posters like Golden Girl. Something about a "Forum Cartel" or something?

Comments like these:

Quote
For 8 years these people have been shutting down any dissent on the forums. Now they can't. Surprise the people that liked the game but really didn't like how it had evolved are having their say.

I am sure they will go back to their campaign of getting other people's games shut down, all the while complaining anyone who disagrees with them is a hater.

Quote
That was the other thing the Titan Crew has been really good at. Getting people to leave the game over the years. Not surprising nothing changes till the end.

Quote
It isn't a complaint it is an observation. It ties in with the observation that for the past 8 years the greatest skill they have exhibited anywhere has been making excuses about why things haven't been done.

Personally if I were to get behind or otherwise help, lookforward to or pre purchase, I would want to see people whose great skill was producing the item, not the manufacture of excuses.

Quote
There are a few people cough* Tim the Enchanter* cough * Anyone who identifies with the titan people* cough , who didn't like the conclusions this thread was drawing so they decided to do anything they could stop discussion of why the game died, and why the Titan efforts were a misguided pipe dream.

They couldn't counter the points being made so they trotted out the most inflamatory stuff they could find all the while calling other people Trolls.

Unbelievably he actually called Black Pebble a NAZI!

Yes and have fun calling godwin. It hardly negates the rabid hate happening over there.

Really. I almost feel sorry for him. This is the most attention he's ever received. When the official boards go down and he has to go to other places that are actually moderated, he won't be able to spew his venom to get attention.

We should be charitable upon this withered soul and buy him an un-moderated forum where he can go spew all the anti-City of Heroes and anti-Titan hate he wants.

He got banned. And then so did the alternate account he created to continue the tirade.

<- Interesting?

Very.

The move from sub with the odd costume pack to nearly everything being purchaseable on the market stinks of that guy who introduces the cash shop into everything.

Personally, I started playing CoX because it didn't have that type of business model; one fee, end of, buy a costume pack if you wanted. Looks like he was trying to turn it into a cash-driven grind fest but got the legs kicked out from under him. Maybe CoX players weren't spending as much in the cash shop as they wanted/expected.

What I found terrifying was the suggestion that Nexon intend to make a move on Valve. That's an unpleasant thought.

That rumours been doing the rounds a while. I think it's been debunked, but like someone says in the comments, just because Valve said they'd rather self-destruct than be owned by anyone else, doesn't mean that Nexon aren't /trying/.

Seems to me to move the NCsoft Boycot to include anything connected to Nexon as well.
