Format for tips within a mission text write-up
« on: February 03, 2010, 03:33:37 PM »
For the write-up on missions, we've recorded all the text that's given to us in the game. However, within that write-up there will sometimes be some player notes -- the kind of stuff that would be written into the margins of a physical guide such as:

Note: Though the mission objective doesn't say so, this is a defeat-all mission.

or

Location: Atlas Park; Skyway; Steel Canyon; Faultline

or

Note: Clicking the glowie is all that's needed for mission completion.

Some of these tips are just dropped in and look like they're part of the textual write-up. Sometimes they may be highlighted in red.

I would think we should have a standard style for such marginal tips or clarifications. Perhaps red highlight them all, or a colored tip-box.

Whatdya think? (And if you're for a style, what should it be?)

I'm always a fan of standardizing things that are common to several articles.  Sounds like a good idea to me.

As far as format goes, I think I'd prefer to let the people who have been elbow deep in trying to update/standardize all of the contact articles over the last few months weigh in rather than just asserting an opinion at random.

I'd be up for using a template to standardize these notes, similar to an Editor's note in a comic book.  For example, if the template used was:

{{EdNote|Things always happen this way, except when they don't.}}

it would be translated as:

(Things always happen this way, except when they don't. - Ed.)

This could eliminate having to use the word "Note," too. Having it be in a certain color would be good, too, though I don't have any specific favorites for it. I'd guess red would be the most appropriate.

If you're going with the comic book theme, the Editor's Notes are usually in a yellow box :)

Joking aside, how about using a template somewhat like that?

{{EdNote}}

Just a quick mockup. Feel free to change/edit/tweak.

I made a pass through the TFs with the EdNote template replacing notes, tips, and strategies with it for review.

You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension - a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into the GuyPerfect Zone.

Within this dimension, you are 256 times as powerful. There is a dance club. It is on Orion's belt. All of the Spruce Hammers come from here, this hammerspace.
