Seems the cropped image size was incorrect...
The posted /cropped image shows 200x160 px

So thats why i think it's duplicating the top/bottom part.  Try recropping that from the original screenshot and see if you can make it 200x200... or crop it outside and upload an already cropped image..
hopefully  it would then work..

Just added one of my own to one of my secondaries, seemed to work fine for me..

Actually, Ice, the image you uploaded is 190x200.  If you look closely at the right side of the image as it displays in your character profile, you'll see a slender little bar of the image repeated.

My guess is that the script that creates the profile and inserts the picture tiles it as a background image.  (Which would explain why you have to click to view the background image in that field to see the original image.)

I might go as far to say Steiner messed it up too... :D lol

SP is concocting a better way to upload. Not sure when he'll get to it, but it will trump this way for sure.

I used a 1280 x 1024 screen shot, when selecting what to use there were gaps between the selection and the image edge.

There was no difference between what I do normally and what I did and only mucked up with this one

Something's definitely gone weird with the image cropper, and I'm not sure what it is. I'll try and look at it tonight if work cooperates.

You're totally right, eabrace.. i missed the thin column there.. guess the contrast in that pic is not the best, but was the 1st i had quickly available..

I've messed around with loading a couple other different images and I notice a couple of things, if any of these may help SP on figuring out the bug

- The 'size' of the cutoff part seems related to the size of the original image.. cropping an image that was originally 1680x1050 gave me almost 'half' 200x100 .. whereas cropping a relatively small original image 258x273 gave me that 190x200

- If you upload an image that is *exactly* 200x200, it does not fail, yet it does not replace the previous  "big image in the main profile page.. oddly enough, it does update the smaller thumbnail in the 'manage character' page..

Hope that helps...

It seems to crop in the same ratio as the uploaded image. If I upload one that is 230x 350, it cuts off one of the sides, if I upload 800x600, it clips the bottom. If I upload a square of any size larger than 200x200, it crops it correctly.

Yes, I'm having this same issue.  Uploaded image and then cropped appears as a split double image.  If I upload a 200x200 image it doesn't show in the profile (just the image for hero Avatar, the circled star).

Is this fixed?  Am I doing something wrong?  Thanks.

Upload a 201x201 picture. It crops it correctly and will show it on the profile. That is what I did with this character.

I uploaded a couple 200x200px images for some of my alts. They didn't load, but I at least got the icon saying an image was attached to their profiles. After playing the game with a completely different alt, and then returning to upload a new shot, I find that the previously uploaded images are no longer even being recognized.

All of them I have uploaded at 201x201 are still there and showing correctly. As long asyour image is square and at least 201x201, it works fine.

Was about to start a new thread about this, but found this one instead.

Should I keep trying until it takes right? Or, should I crop it myself and try it that way?

[edit]
As per the suggestion above, I cropped an image at 201x201 and it took just fine.

All right, sorry about the time it took me to get from "80% done" to "100%", but - I just pushed live a much more improved version of the Image Upload / Cropper tool.

  • People who upload exactly 200x200 images now bypass the cropper completely.
  • The weird aspect ratio bug is gone. You should always have a square image again.
  • The selectable area when cropping is no longer a fixed 200x200 area.  You can dynamically resize the selection area to get the exact area you want.  Keep in mind that selecting a smaller area than 200x200 will work, but your final image will probably be pixelated and not look so great.

I noticed that now all of the images I've uploaded seemed to be either stretched or squashed; I can't tell which. They were all uploaded at 204x204 (I believe) and cropped to 200x200 with the tool provided. Should I just reupload my images at 200x200 and bypass the cropper?

I upload a picture of one of my toons, but it isn't showing up anywhere. His page still has the default background picture, and when I go into edit the page, the picture I uploaded isn't shown.

Does it take awhile to process?

It's easiest to tell if you look at the lines. The non-lined images I made have a much more subtle distortion, and I noticed it on one of them first; thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.

If it helps, I'm noticing the distortion on all images (or most of them) from anyone; the distortion is more difficult to tell on some images, so I can't be 100% sure.  Also, I am not noticing distortion on the overlayed faction/origin/at icons. It could be that they're too small to tell, but I looked pretty hard at 'em.

I know why it's doing this... I took a peek at the upload script... after user uploads their image, it passes through a script, one that will create a NEW image in it's place in a "secret" location on our server... now with php, when you use GD2 Image Manipulation to create image files, you have a choice to choose compression/quality.

Changing compression on an image that isn't already 75 from the COH client won't cause much distortion. I will assume that you take pride in those images you're using, and that the original they're taken from what almost no compression and HIGH dpi...?

If that's the case, that the script compressed an image that was originally 100 Quality to 75 causing the icky lines.

Up to you SP, but possibly changing the quality margin in the upload script to 100 would fix these... it will cause larger files on our server... but for the price of happy users, lol.

Ah if high DPI is the case, I have no problem recreating lower-DPI images for display instead. I usually don't bother dropping the DPI for web icons since I don't think I've encountered a problem with it before now. I don't see the need to 'cause the server extra load and whatnot over a simple matter.

So I made new lower-quality images and uploaded a handful then noticed that didn't make a difference.

I shrugged off the problem for then, but came back to it today. Everything is proportioned correctly in IE, but Firefox is apparently making just about everything slightly larger.

I had my default font sizes in Firefox set to 16pts Tahoma, and dropped it to 12pts (I'm sorry, 12pt is too tiny fer my eyes to stand regularly), but that didn't seem to fix the problem.

Here's an overlay, with the Firefox image on 25% opacity. You can see the great difference:

Anyone have a clue how I can smack Firefox into displaying correctly?

You scaled the UI larger?  Or just the font size?

If you use a different Firefox (on a different machine, presumably at the default UI scaling) do you see the same results?

I only have one computer. I dunno if I scaled the UI larger. In Firefox's settings all I could change was the default font sizes/types. And I've it set to use a page's set font/size if they are coded so. (Maybe I'm missing something?)

I was looking for some setting that would let me change other sizes and finding nothing.  My DPI in Windows XP is set to 'normal' at 96 (I figured 72 would be the norm...), and that's the closest thing to changing UI scale that I can figure.

I mean.. if this problem is just me I'll deal with it if it can't be changed. I'm probably one of the few out there paying so close attention to notice the difference.

Well the reason I ask is because that image is a specific size - 200x200.  The only way to make it any different is to scale the size the webpages are displayed at within the browser.

Based on your overlay, I'd wager that's what is going on.   If that's the case, then there's not much I can do.  However, if it's not, I want to make sure it gets checked out.

I got this bug too. It looks like the crop area has to be 200x200 pixels or smaller. If you expanded it to cover the entire 201x201 image, it won't compress properly to fit and the result is undisplayable. Recommend for the time being you upload a 200x200 image exactly, since that's now functioning as intended.
