Vote for the 15th Anniversary badge name!
« on: March 15, 2019, 06:29:15 AM »
This badge needs a name!

It's that time again! From now until April 5th, the community can suggest names for the 15th Anniversary badge. A poll to select the definite winner will go up on April 6th until April 19th. That's 3 weeks to suggest names, and 2 weeks to vote the definitive name.

The rules are the same as last before: it has to be one word, and it should be usable to describe a character; "Celebrant" is someone who celebrates, "Rhapsodic" is someone who is exceptionally emotional, "Torchbearer" is someone who carries a torch, "Timeless" is someone who is not affected by the passage of time. We're following the same theme.

Similarly when it comes to theme, this is a celebration of the game's anniversary! It should have positive connotations. "Punisher" or "Tyrant" really won't do. There's a lot of discussion about it that you can refer to the previous threads, so they are linked at the bottom. No name is being grandfathered in, they all need to be nominated by someone in this thread in order to make the cut.

Previous topics:
Name the 13th Anniversary Badge / Vote for the 13th Anniversary Badge Name!
Name the 14th Anniversary Badge

Don't forget to cast your vote! Not a lot of suggestions this year, so you're limited to voting for two options, your primary and a backup.

"True Believer"

We're still here, all of us reading this post and voting on anniversary badges, after all these years. Because of those who make Paragon Chat and SEGS a reality still dare to believe in our City, and those of us that still consider ourselves Citizens of the City, and still believe in all it can be. (after all, we can log in and talk to each other, get badges, work on bases, and in the future who KNOWS what else?...)

Also after Stan Lee, who passed last year, and I consider one of the godfathers of all us "True Believers" of comic book super heroes. For me, there's really no better choice.

'Nuff said.

it has to be one word

What's the reasoning behind this? And is it set in stone? Lycantropus' suggestion is amazing, but is also disqualified by this rule if it's unbendable.

What Roderick said. I know the previous 14 were one word. But "True Believer" resonates with me as well.

I know this isn't the voting thread, but I really like "True Believer" as well, so I hope the "one word only" rule can be bent, considering the uniqueness of the circumstances (it's a 5-year milestone, and Stan Lee's death happened between the 14th and 15th anniversaries, making now the perfect time for such a reference).

As for my suggestion, I know it breaks the 'one word' rule, but when it hit me last night, I couldn't think of anything more fitting.

Quincelsior!

I was thinking of suggesting "Excelsior", actually, but Stan usually used that to end his missives, while CoH - despite NCSoft's intentions - is not ending yet, so I decided against it.

Normally I'd say "Pantsless", but this being the only chance for "Quinceanera", I'll go with that. Just so long as no one's wearing pants under their fancy dress.

With the Ides of March today, I got to thinking about Ides and its definition:

1: The 15th day of March, May, July, or October or the 13th day of any other month in the ancient Roman calendar

That got me thinking about Idyllic, which defines as:

1: pleasing or picturesque in natural simplicity
2: of, relating to, or being an idyll

With Idyll defined as:

1a: a simple descriptive work in poetry or prose that deals with rustic life or pastoral scenes or suggests a mood of peace and contentment
b: a narrative poem (such as Tennyson's Idylls of the King) treating an epic, romantic, or tragic theme
2a: a lighthearted carefree episode that is a fit subject for an idyll
  b: a romantic interlude

Seeing as WE as players have different perceptions of what the game was to us (epic, tragic, romantic, peaceful to play at the end of a hard day's work, et al), I figured I'd honed in on what stood out as the better badge name for this, in my opinion.

Ergo, my submission for the name of our 15th Anniversary Badge is:

Idyllic

Thank you for viewing my thought process. I hope no neurons were hurt in the process. If so, the psyche ward is that way -->   ;D

The only time I don't lurk is when I log in to vote on this badge every year. I really like the "True Believer" suggestion. That would be an excellent tribute not only to Stan Lee but everyone who still believes in what CoH stood for and was as a community.

Absolutely! TRUE BELIEVER!

If that's not doable due to the one-word rule - then EXCELSIOR is definitely the best possible alternative!

While True Believer sounds very fitting, how about...

"Shin-Digger"?

I always liked the early anniversary badges focus on being someone who's celebrating or partying, and a shindig is a kind of party while shin-digger sounds like a weird kind of illegal martial arts move designed to cripple an opponent which seems fitting for a game of super powers.

I am going to suggest Spirited.  I adore the concept that True-Believer would bring in remembrance of both one of the godfathers of our game and our game.
If we can't get that then Spirited is related in concept.

If we can't have "True Believer" then I'd say shorten it to simply "Believer". It fits as a tribute to Stan, and also resonates with the work being done on SEGS as well as the successor projects.

As Vee said, it's redundant without "True" attached.

A nod to Stan's legacy is a nice thought, though. I'd dig either True Believer or Excelsior. +1 for either.

Okay, since it can only be one word, I amend my suggestion.

Instead, I suggest True-Believer.

According to the rules of grammar, a hyphenated word makes it one word, since each separate word refers to a singular person, or idea (like father-in-law or... Spider-Man).

https://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/hyphens.asp

Hopefully, that will pass the 'single word' rule, and Stan Lee showed the way...

I also want "True Believer" in Paragon Chat, but I think "True Believer" SHOULD be an NPC exploration badge, because Stan Lee deserves a tribute that is PERMANENTLY in Paragon City, available to anyone who visits his NPC.

Our 15th Anniversary is our 15th Anniversary...let's hold "True Believer" for a better moment. :)

After some thought, if True-Believer doesn't work (and I wouldn't mind Stan taking up permanent residence in Paragon... maybe in Steel in the same apartments War Witch and Apex lived in? See the "Secret Admirer" badge) then I support Excelsior. I kind of saw it as a 'goodbye' phrase, too... but that wasn't what it meant to Stan:

And isn't that all what we want for our City as folks keep working on projects like Paragon Chat and SEGS? Upward and onward!!

Thanks for that, Lycantropus. I don't know if anyone else here has seen his old columns before, but I could always tell that he was using it as an exclamation and gesture that felt way more exciting than a simple "goodbye". Upward and onward is one of my life mantras. I don't always succeed, sometimes I fail spectacularly, but that's why we need mantras. Maybe Stan is where I got it from.

Would love-love-love to see a True Believer exploration badge and tribute to Stan Lee in Paragon Chat.

Also I know the rules around hyphens are soft and not hard and there are also situations when writers must decide whether to add them for clarity, but True-Believer might kind of stretch that inherent generosity within the rules of grammar anyway hehe. Gluing 'True' and 'Believer' together doesn't seem to give it any more special meaning or clarity than leaving it unhyphenated, which is the purpose of hyphenated words especially when they're not being used as adjectives before nouns (I couldn't find any grammar rules about making a word fit to pass a badge test ;) ) .

P.S. the original appearance of Spider-Man in Amazing Fantasy called him Spider Man. The picture up-thread was a tribute to that original cover appearance (and there have been many tributes). Stan Lee later (MUCH LATER) wrote on Twitter that Spidey was given a hyphen to avoid anyone confusing him with Superman. That wouldn't be surprising because even back then when the playing field was smaller (or maybe especially back then, without the budget for a big corporatized legal department), rival comics companies took sometimes unnecessary pains to avoid stepping on each others toes, and it would have been par for the course for Marvel to be concerned about infringing on the DC Comics trademarks for the unhyphenated Superman.

(Ahhh, finally, I can sleep tonight knowing that I made a way-too-long post about another anniversary badge.)
