Final Fantasy XIV
« on: June 14, 2017, 06:09:45 AM »
Anyone else play this? It's been my main game for a number of months now and I marvel at how well everything is designed compared to my old game, Champions Online (RIP).

It's actually really great from the community to the raids to the dungeons to the open world content to the story, oh the story.

with the Stormblood Expansion arriving in mere days I'm also hyped for all the new stuff  ;D

I've tried it but it's not my style. My wife plays it off and on and quite enjoys it. For the type of game it is I think it's well done and there did seem to be a healthy RP population when I played it.

I played for a while on PS4 and really enjoyed it, but I couldn't figure out how to resubscribe.  (I paid for my first month through the PS Network, but then when I tried to resubscribe, it told me I had to make a whole new Square-Enix account on their website, which I didn't want to do)

I've been thinking of trying this, and I have a few questions. (The first three are my standard questions for any MMO.)

1. Does it have a free-to-play option?
2. For us non-PvPers, can we play without being attacked by other players?
3. How much is teaming required?

And, specific to this game:
4. Can a character do without a "patron deity"?
Linux. Because a world without walls or fences won't need Windows or Gates.

Based on my months old outdated experience:

No

It's a PvE oriented game, so yes.

It's mandatory for certain parts of the game. You have to group to progress parts of your main story and you need to group to do end game content. Most of the game is as solo friendly as the average MMO these days.

The only thing I recall deities being a part of was flavor for your character at creation.

1. No it's completely sub based with a limited free trial, but it's well worth it as this means theres no lockbox crap and everything is of a high quality.

2. All pvp is optional and instanced.

3. To progress the main story it is required you team for certain dungeons and trials, but the community is miles better than your average mmo and mostly very friendly and helpful.

4. I think you have to pick one but its nothing but a flavor option. I picked Menphina for mine but your patron diety is never referred to in game.

It has a pretty good teaming system, where you can just queue for a dungeon and the team is formed automatically, rather than you specifically having to solicit people for a group.  That has all the usual dangers of random PUGs, but it went smoothly when I tried it.

Most of the content is solo-able, though, and easily so.

1) Yes, to level 35. Limited to just one character per server though.
2) Yes. Made it to level 60 without even entering a *hint* of PvP.
3) There is some required for the Main Story Quest (dungeons/trials), but on a well populated server you will generally get a queue pop rather quickly during prime time (I rarely wait more than 10 minutes for a queue for a *specific* dungeon/trial to pop). You can do other stuff as well whilst waiting. Also, on top of that, you also get a bonus if there is a player in the group who has yet to complete it.

Side note: If you tell the group that you are new, and haven't done the dungeon before, more often than not (as in I have had just 2 bad teaming experiences in over 500 PUG's), they will help you out, tell you the tactics for each boss in the dungeon etc etc.

4) This has a meaning? Yeah, no effect as far as I can tell.

I wouldn't call that free to play I'd call it a trial. Especially since you cant send tells or add friends or join a free company (guild) till you sub.

So the free "trial" is like Star Wars' Tor "F2P" option?

Last I checked free players in SWTOR can add friends and join groups, but their system is awful and doesn't deserve to be called F2P. at least FFXIV doesn't make the claim.

Thanks; this is what I meant - if you HAVE TO pick one, in order to play the game. (I know that some will see my thinking as odd, but I take my faith seriously, so the idea of having to pick a "god" - imaginary or not, virtual or not - makes me uneasy.)

But then again CoX was similar for the truely F2P players.

Just by spending $5 gave you a reward token. Which gave the following:

Quote
Owning 1 Reward Token grants the following: A total of two Character Slots across all servers, Ablity to join Supergroups, Access to Local, Team, Help, Friends, Supergroup, League, Arena, Leveling Pact, Looking for Group, Emote, and Architect Communication Channels, Reward Drops including small Inspirations, Training [TO], Dual-Origin [DO], Single-Origin [SO] and Special Enhancements, an Inf Cap of 25 million inf per character and Limited Inventory (?)

Link: Paragon Wiki

So would you call the CoX F2P option a trial?
