So I bit the bullet and am continuing to ride out the waves of STO updates. I bit my tongue on this up until now but I have to say their update data sizes to this point have not matched their amount of new content/things patched.

"Made Ferengi ears slightly larger".... Downloading....400 meg.

Wha?

It puzzles me due to they seem to use the same patch system as CO and CO's updates are generally under 50 meg vs. STO's minimum 400 meg. Even when CO has a fairly substantial update it's well under 400 meg.

I'm not going to compare who updates their game more because we all know who would lose. I'm more commenting on how even minor updates result in 400 meg downloads.

Who cares, I know. When you can dl that much in a few seconds and do it every day without any penalties from your ISP, like nearly everyone can, it's irrelevant. Just commenting.

Maybe someone's forgetting to flip the /compression flag: on (jk : )

Yes watch the season releases if you are on restricted bandwith they are large, and require multiple fixes. They also pre-send them, and the loader will manually pop back up to pre get it. (Don't walk away crash and get a big bill!)

Not sure if sometimes they use compression for large dumps, or append files (or check everything?), but there is some majic strangeness. As for 400MB ferengi ears, from another game I've found out that say when they would alter the merchant they needed to resend the all mercant files, for all the maps. 1 new item added up quick. I'd expect the reason is the same in STO, fix the ears .. get the whole ferengi (or the entire federation PC graphics)
Always be Stylin!

One day people will look back and say 'Yeah, it was kinda dumb, My ISP bragged about their download speeds but then if I were to utilize those speeds I would run out of my MONTHLY allotment of Internet bandwidth in less than an HOUR.

Ah well. I feel better. Thanks. hehe.

Ships..

Is the last free ship at lvl 50? Is that a T5? What's the main difference between that and a T6? Do I have to join a Fleet or pay zen for a T6?

I just saw someone mention in Zone that lvl 50's can get T6's and I'm lvl 57, so.... figured I better ask!

From what I remember the last free ship was a rear admiral, the main difference between a t5 and a t5u and t6 is the t5u and t6 gets powers such as +5% for acc. A regular t5 does not get those powers. The main defense for a t6 is they get another boff set. The easiest way to get a t6 would be buying it from the store, however, if you are a part of a fleet they do have t6 fleet ships which has far better stats but require more things then just buying them from the zstore..
A l50, can get a few lock box ships, they cannot fly say the new Odyssey class t6 ships.
One day the Phoenix will rise again.

I don't have damage floaters on for other people and I haven't parsed but it feels like my dps is still really low. I'm Tactical, in an advanced Escort, running MK XII and Very Rare in about every equipment slot so I was hoping maybe my next ship would be the game changer.

It's really a shame that CO doesn't have even half the tradeskill system that STO has. I went to play some CO today for the first time since my first break from it. It's like, I'm good at CO and I LUV CO (felt good to be home), but, there's nothing to do there but get nerfed and retcon (the toon I logged in on after well over a month of absence had a Mandatory retcon waiting for him to pour a lil salt in the wound...) and when I get done with that I play at least 90% of the same content I have played since leveling my first 40 and it is just as hard/easy, so, the nerfs don't even have a point - they are just frustrating and take away from play time whenever they hit one of the builds I want to play.

I suck at STO but yet there's still tons to do and that's why I'm gonna go back and play it after finishing this.

I could tradeskill my brains out in CO. Just let the components drop in places where you want people to be - like Alurts, and mishes  and why not let them drop in outdoor zones too. Tradeskilling involves playing the market and fighting mobs. Done well, like in STO, It gives an ongoing, compelling, reason to do so. Fighting mobs and playing the market involves being involved with other players, too - even for solo artists. It's a good thing.

I know everyone who plays long enough has their own opinion on what would help CO and there is one of mine. Two of my most used buttons, the 'jump' (for barrel rolls) and 'block' (for terminating attack macros errrr and...oh yeah, blocking) mouse buttons that I have used since I started playing CO after CoH went away, fell off, today, too, so, that kinda killed it for me too.. lol

I only recently caught on to how damage works in STO. The whole thing is quite complicated if you want to wring every point of damage out that you can but if you're fairly casual (like i am) then it comes down to power levels.

For example : At weapons power 50 your ships energy weapons will do standard damage but for every 1% increase in weapon power over 50 the damage increases by 2%. Similar stuff happens for other ship systems.

Also i assumed for ages that the weapon mods (dam, acc, critDam, critChance etc) would all be more or less equivalent in effectiveness. Since found out this is not the case. Ideally you're looking for Dam, CritDam and Pen. Seems Acc and critchance are much less effective.

There is a lot more to it all, enough to keep almost anyone occupied with their build if they like that kind of thing but these two points probably cover the majority of it.

I'll check the power level thing.. I have no idea what my average power level is. I already kinda gathered that acc was a lesser stat to go for from tradeskilling but I didn't realize crit chance is. Seems to me that crit chance would be a good thing due to it seems harder to raise than crit severity and what good is a mondo crit severity if I never crit.

After the revamp I noticed from one of the new descriptions that range can make a difference in beam weapons. That's something I never considered up to now either.

I don't need to be a star (yet..) (hehe) I just wanna be more useful at this point. Don't want to be an anchor in queues due to I want to run them for mats and I just like running them. Just by watching and comparing the rate at which many other players make things go poof I can tell my dps is pretty bad. I did get parsed one time in a team and it was reeeeeeally low compared to all but one other newb.

Thanks for the tips. Sounds like I need to learn about power levels. I've been avoiding learning about power transfer up to this point too.

How's weapons power 120, baby!

Or something like this.

That was a good tip. I'll be learning more about power levels and how gear works with them. I have another excellent newb tip for dps... Get into OFFENSE MODE.. Or whatever it's called I forgot to look it up. (duh..) I still don't do near the dps I want but at lvl 58 I'm finally putting out enough to grab agro sometimes.

I thought adjusting power levels was something shown in the tutorial?

When I played, I basically stayed between the offensive and defensive power presets. I recall maybe I went to the other presets between combat, to get hull repair going faster.

Some mods will let your Power Level go over 125%
And always invest in EPS skills... make sure you get your power transfer rate over 200%.  The trick with power transfer rate is that while your in ESD or sector space it will only show 100% - once you go into combat your true number will show.
It's great that you can get your weapon power to 120% but it doesn't do anything for you if you cant sustain 120% power.  The EPS skill contribute to transfer rate and that helps you keep that 120% power rating.

Hope that helps

Damn (my ISP) those huge patches!

I'm on rations again for a week...

I still can't believe crit chance is a bad thing to go for - it seems like a hard stat to raise and without it all that easy to get severity doesn't seem very useful.

My power level definitely doesn't stay pegged at 125 but it seems to mostly hover over it. Ok I give, what the heck are EPS skills? I'm guessing it has to do with (power) cost discount.

Thanks. I'll be sure to check those out... next week  : / I will.

Hey at least tradeskilling doesn't use much bandwidth. I can do some doffing and have some reputation marks built up for turning in hourlies too. That's how I spend at least half my time playing normally anyway..

The Netflix days seem so far off sometimes... lol

Hey while we're at it.. where can I get Admiralty ships? And what are these ships they are talking about at the end of the Tactical tree? The ones that get a bonus from the tree choice. I'll look the name up when I log in next time.

Did they ever complete the out-of-game portal, and make DOffs playable in browser?

The cheapest plan or something? Does your ISP offer a cheaper plan but with bandwidth limits? Has it? Ever?

Naw, I use wireless atm due to it's the only broadband available here in the wild, wild west. Thanks for playing.

So how do I get Admiralty ships...? I don't even know what the rewards are but it seems like I don't have enough ships. Gah I forgot to look up the name of those ships in the Tactical tree..
