Just in case you guys were actually serious that Space combat is what killed STO for you.. (Maybe you were just jiving me, I dunno!) There is a way to play all-Ground.

I get like 1 hour of STO bandwidth a day for the next 10 days so I have distilled my STO experience down to Space battles, tradeskilling, and, keeping that duty roster icon from flashing by sending those guys on mishes. You can do almost the same thing I do except swap in ground battles and take out space battles.

Spacebattlewise I've been doing Patrol mishes and those random battles that pop up on the space map. I was joining the PVE queues but they are bandwidth munchers so I have to give them up for a little while. Patrol mishes give better but less loot than the random map battles. I would imagine this is due to the random battles set you to level 30 and the Patrol mishes seem to be at my level. Patrol mishes are harder than the random map battles, to me. Patrol mishes are solo - the random map battles can be solo... or your screen can fill up with help from other players or maybe just one or two other people pop in. They both give plenty good enough xp for me.

You can do a similar thing, Ground version. First off, I've never seen random map battles that are Ground battles - all the ones I have seen are Space battles. So you may not get to do a ground version of this. You can do Patrol mishes to your hearts content, tho, and it fits in well with keeping your ... duty officers(?) busy on mishes (as you travel) that can sometimes give pretty decent rewards. That Admiral progression stuff can be all Ground, too. I do the all Space version.

I don't know how active the PVE queues are. The Space version ones aren't so active. Probably because people are running queues I don't even know about yet. There are queues, for example, that pop up at level 50 I think it was. Those queues and the random map battle queues seem more populated than the PVE queues.

*shrug*

Anyway.. fwiw..

You can Ground mish your way all the way to 60 (is that the cap?) as far as I can tell, and tradeskill, and do the Admiral stuff, and the Duty Roster stuff. Basically, play a ground version of the game.

It's working for me! The space version anyway. if I was limited to just Patrols (I mostly just do those anyway due to I want the drops for my ship atm, ha) for the Space battle part I would probably be satisfied... sooo.... I was thinking even if you guys are limited to mostly just Patrols for the Ground battle part, it might work for you.

Patrol-tradeskilling is kinda a lot of fun to me for some reason.

Btw If you decide to try Patrol trade-mishering, there will be Space battles you have to skip, and, some space mishes are not battles at all. I just fly around and scan stuff. Basically, how you do it, is fly from system to system until you find one that has a Patrol mish. Accept the mish, then find out if it is Ground or Space. If it's Space, Exit, and go on to the next system. Meanwhile you are picking up new mishes in different areas of space for your Duty roster guys, and, your duty roster mishes and tradeskilling stuff is completing.

On the Space side, and especially after level 50, there are more queues to join but I don't have the bandwidth until this billing cycle ends to join them anyway so I'm mostly just doing a Space version of the above and it's been pretty fun so I thought I'd share.

Could try it again then. The first time I tried it wasn't within the first year, but just after the first time they revamped the tutorial/new player experience I think.

It started getting better when they began doing the featured series (the Breen arc, the Devidian arc...etc), then it really picked up when they added the Romulan expansion. Since then, it seems like something gets better every time they make an update, whether it's better story-telling, or better QoL items. I can't speak toward your standard end-game raids and PVP, cause I don't participate in those. I'm not big on group content, however, the open world missions like the Undine Battlezone in the Dyson Sphere and the Kobali Homeworld in the Delta Quadrant are multiplayer missions/zones I do find fun. My one unresolved issue with this game (with basically every Cryptic game) is their servers are still pretty bad, though even they have improved significantly.

Right now, I go between this and another AAA sci-fi MMO. This one has only improved as time has gone on, whereas the other one only ever seems to get worse and is only worth playing because it's the only decent modern game related to its IP.

Here's a first impression of the tute from a new player I know well..

Anywayyyy. It's been fun. It did take me awhile to get into the game. More than a few hours. In the beginning it was a huge change of pace and gameplay to what I've become used to the past few years with CO. The tutorial seemed (as tutorials can) fairly excruciatingly slow and full of those 3d models models that make me cringe. But after giving the game some time.... blah blah blah...

Yeah. Potential new players, as with many games, definitely do not judge STO by the tute. My new player experience was to hope the tutorial would be over sooooon.. hehe.

I'm uuuusually (there are exceptions) not big on soloing mishes or mishes in general since like King's Quest 5 (lol) so I'm glad STO seems chock full of active multiplayer content. For the mish inclined, STO does seem to be keeping people happy. The tradeskilling looks promising too. *fingers crossed*.

PWE definitely needs a new ISP. Been saying the same thing for years now. I came to hardly even notice rubberbanding anymore in CO. It's become more like...

newb: "is there lag, I can't play!'
seasoned CO player <rubberband combat mode: on>: 'newb'.

STO must own the Internet. They've been shoving data at me by the near half gigabyte since I installed it. There was already a sucking sound on the Internet when I downloaded the original client.

It won't be as big a deal to me next month and it's already ate up most of my bandwidth to play with this month but I'm still curious if anyone has experience with the 'on-demand' option in the patcher. I googled it and came up with conflicting info.

One reason that's prompting me to question, is, I'm downloading 400 meg updates after scheduled server downtime even when nothing in the game is being updated. There was a small update last week and I downloaded the same 400 megs as this week when there was no update according to Release Notes.

It probably won't make a difference but I had the playtime to spare.... *ahem* .. hehe  : / *pout*

I was in closed beta, and have a lifetime subscription, but I stopped playing around the time issue 7 came out. The end game was just too grindy and repetitive for me, and there wasn't enough variation in the story leveling up. I LOVED ground PvP, but I'm pretty sure it's fairly different now.
I used CIT before they even joined the Titan network! But then I left for a long ol' time, and came back. Now I edit the wiki.

The story's changed quite a bit since you left. They've now opened up the Delta Quadrant, fought the Iconians (I haven't gotten to that just yet), and now they're doing something involving time and the Mirror Universe. They've gone back and updated all the old story missions and streamlined everything (though there's some stuff that seems out of place; mostly regarding the placement of the "featured series" like the Devidian arc) missions.

They've also combined all the sector blocks into quadrants. So instead of having to fly through traffic control gates to go from the Vulcan sector block to the Tau Dewa sector block, you just fly straight through. The only gates/loading screens now are between the Alpha, Beta and Delta Quadrants. They've added specializations to further customize your character's performance, and they're about to drop a revamp to the original skill system.

The bottom of this page gives a brief description of what all has changed over the years.

Yeah, I've followed along... but 1. I try not to play too many video games anymore and 2. I'm not confident I won't end up in the same place, with only repeatable queues and repeatable open world quests to do. GPvP was never popular enough to do regularly, unfortunately.

No one ever mentions the tradeskill system. It actually seems to be fully functional and useful and so far it even fits in with how I play. So far it seems pretty darn good. I'm still only making newb gear but I'm making very nice newb gear and my skill's going up.

Something I like about STO up to this point is that it doesn't lock me into one way to play and progress. I can run mishes, various multiplayer queues, Patrols (that offer Ground only & Space only mini-mishes), Tradeskill, play the market.. roam space.. The variety in ship design and function looks enough to keep me busy for awhile too.

The way I play has a Space Explorey feeling to it that I like. Kinda in the spirit of good ol' Star Trek: Rebel Universe. Rebel Universe isn't nearly as polished as STO but it still had a  huger feeling universe to me (I think I never saw it all) and manages to fit it on less than 360k.

Woohoo!

It's a new billing cycle and Verizon has trickled me out some more bandwidth for another month and today even happens to be a relatively chore-free Saturday so it's Game On, baby..

Holy cra.. Geez. I went two whole days without logging onto the Internet. Since peasant access to the Internet was granted with Windows 3.0 I think this has occurred... twice?

I would compare it to quitting smoking.

Feels like kinda a sucky time to be learning the game due to they are about to totally change parts of it, it sounds like. Ah well, I'm spending most of my newb time learning flight mechanics and tradeskill stuff and that stuff isn't likely to change.

---

Are Omega, Romulan, Etc, Marks, that are rewards for PVE queues, worth going for if I'm not interested in the Ground benefits? Is Fleet Mark loot worthwhile?

I'm getting asked to choose for PVE rewards and they all look the same to me atm. Fleet Marks, I can't use. Omega, Romulan, Terran, etc, Marks, I don't see any immediate use for either.

You use those marks to buy space and ground equipment which is usually some of the better equipment in the game. Fleet Marks are for fleet projects, and when you contribute to those projects you get Fleet Credits, which in turn allow you to buy fleet ships and fleet space and ground equipment; which is also some of the better equipment in the game.

Thanks, it doesn't help that the different Stores are all greyed out until I can use them. Now I just have to figure out how to get more Admiralty ships. I'm guessing, the Shipyard. Didn't get around to looking yesterday. After that, I think I'll finally have figured out what my interface windows are for and do and have an idea of how to keep them busy.

Is there only one way to retcon or do I have to do a full one for Zen every time?

Sooooo.. Looks like time to game shop again.

As of this morning I'd gotten my tradeskilling up to a profitable level and was enjoying some nice reward unlocks from trading in PVE marks, and, was beginning to understand the PVE queues better. Got my screen resolution and some graphics options worked out so that the interface and battle screens were way more readable. Still a lot to learn but I had a nice routine going and was getting my stuff upgraded and things figured out... I even got over those 400meg+ downloads every week or two for what seemed like trivial updates.

This kills it for me though (6 gig update - 1 gig more than I used to get for a whole month..) http://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/startrekonline#/discussion/1213799/scheduled-maintenance-april-7th-2016/p4

As far as I can tell with my brief stint with STO they simply push out more data than I can download.

Damn  : /

-------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------

Hrrrrmmm.. OK. Sooo. I decided to see the download size for myself and... for me it's the average but manageably huge 400 meg.

I've felt like Dustin Hoffman in that movie where his whole lil world disappears until all that's left is the spot he stands on and then he poofs, this Spring, so far, so... I figured STO was just the next thing to poof. Not yet tho! Apparently. yay. ha.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

Oh and hey my next newb: A balding Saurian, 'Cap'n Stubing' of the U.S.S Luv Boat. Think I'm gonna go Fed/Science/Cruiser with him. I want to go Tactical but I already am trying that with an Escort. He may end up as an Engineer..  *shrug* I mainly just want to try out Cruisers for the first time without having to buy an expensive one with Admiral Xev at this point.

Oh and hey my next newb: A balding Saurian, 'Cap'n Stubing' of the U.S.S Luv Boat.

The second (or so) character I made in closed beta was named "sexy pregnant saurian," because I wanted to see if you could use "sexy" in names, and because the stomach slider made people fat / pregnant looking. And the cutesy pose looked ridiculous. As far as I know, you can still use "sexy" in names, but not "sex," which I think is weird.

I went for as cartoonish a look as I could go for on my first attempt with Cap S. To me he kinda looks like a cross between Captain Stubing and a blue My Favorite Martian. I dunno why some people had to download such big updates today. Glad I wasn't one of them. I'm just starting to get into the game.

Man... Someone parsed the team in a PvE queue last week and ... well, I can at least say I was Second to last and not last but wow did me and Lasty get blown away. I mean, up until then I really thought I was... contributing.. Lol! I was even joining Advanced queues. That was an eye opener. I think my build is decent and I'm playing it decent. I'm hoping it's just my ship and/or gear/level. I'm glad the guy posted the parse. Wasn't at the moment..

At this point, somehow, I tend to spend most of my time tradeskilling and learning to play the market. And then I go 'to play' and it's almost time to go to bed. ha.

What's the difference between a Blue and Purple Boff?

It doesn't seem to be choice of powers or level of powers sooo am I wrong or what's left?

I like my Boffs but I just noticed some are blue, so, and especially since they are so cheap, I went to upgrade my Blues to Purple. But then I found I can't find a better Purple version of my Blues.

Fwiw on that 3 - 6gig update that people said they were downloading after the last patch...

I accidently got myself into a ground PVE queue last night and as soon as I found out I ... well, I exited the game. Bad Xev, I know. When I went back in... the client said it needed to download 3+ gig. After I oh noed and exited, I went back in and there was no download at all.

Sorry for the late reply, rare boffs normally get 1 superior skill, such as operative + 75% or something like that. They also get 1 or 2 skill that can have III. Very rare boffs get 2 to 3 superior skills, and outside of player captains they can get powers that normally you would need someone to train your boff for.

Sounds like a case of I don't know Superior Skills.

When I compare (w/o the above knowledge) blue and purple Doffs, they look the same to me. They both only have 1 default Space power that is level III and they have the same power Level spread in general.

At 50kish a pop, may as well go Purple if it's better. I just couldn't see the betterness! I spent a long time picking my Blues (how poor was I, then?? ha) and I like how their powers worked out but better is better so I must look at those purples again here in just a lil bit.

Tyvm  : )

-------------------

So I went back and looked and it's still kinda confusing. It seems like I can train my blues to do everything a purple can do as long as the blue has the same power choices. F/X my blue and purple tactical Boffs have (exactly?) the same power choices available for training and they also offer them at the same rank. Only difference between the two of them atm is they have different default things trained.

My purple Does have 2 level 3 powers by default but when I was looking in the exchange they seemed to normally have only 1, like the blues - and besides, I can train those same level 3 powers that my purple has, with my blue.

Hey I got in another PVE Ground queue by accident and this time I went for it. Omg I was lost but it was still more fun that I imagined. Luckily I had Xev dressed in Reputation gear which seems to be pretty decent but yeah, I was lost. Will definitely be paying more attention to gear and updating Ground hotkeys...... and trying that again.

So there I was... 850 meg into the latest STO patch and ~ 33% done but with seemingly at least 2 gig worth of uncompressed update to go,, asking myself, "Do I really need this stress..?"

I already went a week and a half with nearly no Internet last week due to running out of bandwidth so I am hesitant to go further at this point.

That's kinda sad. I can play for free and still can't afford it. Can't say they didn't do their part. Ha.
