Star Trek Online
« on: January 18, 2016, 08:21:12 PM »
So, been toying around with STO for a few days... and I cannot figure out how to do *anything.*  I mean, I can fly the ship, and kill the baddies, but I don't know how to level, how to get more crew members, what good all these drops do for me, etc...  I don't even know how to find what level I am.

HELP!

I will help you captain. To level all you do is hit the k button, then click on your captain, from there you allot the points into the skills you want. For the bridge officers there are different ways of getting them, one is from the z store, 2 is from the bridge officer request to ESD. Third is from the market on ESD or Kronos.
The drops if you do not want to keep them you can vendor them, this is pretty much the only way to earn EC.
The level part is you captains rank so if you see LT 5 you are in a way level 6.
Btw if you need bridge officers I can give you some, rares and very rares :). I wont be on until tomorrow. I can also invite you into the fleet I am in, called Paragon (I forgot the rest of the name)
One day the Phoenix will rise again.

That'd be sweet... I got invited to a fleet, and joined, but I am a little uncomfortable with it and would gladly quit to join an ex-CoH cult, er, fleet.  (The one I joined has "Confederation" in it... Making me a little uncomfortable)

I got a mission to help train some cadets, with the reward being a bridge officer of some kind, but went off to do other things and it seemed to disappear from my choices.

Odd.

OK, this helps a bit, but this game has a pretty steep learning curve.  Well, to me, anyway.  Might be helpful if i knew anything about Star Trek at all.

I just started it myself last week.  It's rather confusing, though I'm level 14 already, which means I have a spiffy new ship that's not quite as terrible as the one I started with.  (I probably should have gotten an Escort, so that I could end space battles more quickly, but I went with a Cruiser instead, because I couldn't resist having a ship that looked like the original Enterprise)

Your XP are "Skill Points", and can be directly used to increase your captain's abilities.  There's also "Expertise", which is something similar to that, but for your crewmen.  I haven't figured out how to learn new abilities for them.  (Keeps telling me I need training manuals, with no indication of where to get such manuals)

What confused me the most is that the missions seemed to stop for a while when I hit level 10.  I had to do some PvE-queue things before I could resume doing story-ish missions.  And then I started fighting vampire ghosts in a spooky haunted basement.

I'm kinda enjoying the game, but I'm not really excited about it.

Anyway, I'm Lt. Commander Drakar (of the USS Righteous Indignation - well, Rgts Indignation.  The full name was too long) @ zazelby.

Oh, I want to fight Space Vampire Ghosts.   :)

After that comes Space Frankenstein Werewolf Zombies, right?

Yeah, it was a VERY weird mission.  (This being Star Trek, they weren't really vampires or ghosts, of course, but
Spoiler for Hidden:
"slightly out-of-phase aliens who drain neural energy, plus one hologram with faulty programming"
doesn't sound as spooky)

I haven't played in years, but I liked the single away missions found on many planets once you orbit the planet.
I also liked the duty officers' mission assignments.  You felt more like a captain of a crew with that.

I stopped playing after reaching level 50 as a Federation captain and a Klingon captain, I found raids to be boring.  *snore*
I played the new Romulan expansion for a bit but lost interest and did not finish it.

I went the cruiser route for my main two captains.  I wanted to command the Klingon D7, my favorite space ship from any show.

They're also from a TNG two-parter: the one with Data's head.

Wasn't Data's head in *every* TNG episode?

Anyway, Angel Phoenix77, send me a mail in STO hurple@hurple (I like to keep it simple)  ;D

Crossover idea!  Data and Kryten accidentally switch heads.

That's fine.  I'm not in a hurry.  STO is just my latest attempt to find a game I enjoy anywhere near as much as CoH.  So far DCUO, CO, and Secret World have all failed.  Secret World seemed the closest, but it's too linear, and I found the leveling choices confusing.

CO is the closest in gameplay to CoH, naturally, but I made the mistake of choosing the Night Avenger class as the first I leveled to 40.  It was great fun!  But, then going back and trying another class... yeah, didn't like any other I tried anywhere near as much.  Now, I'm trying a Freeform, and have stalled at level 30.  It just seems so boring and lifeless now.

DCUO is fun, but too much button mashery going on throughout.

So far, STO is... OK.  Just too much wandering around, it seems.  And one more mission where all I do is go talk to this person, then go talk to that person and relay a message back to the first person just to get asked to go find three other people and talk to them and deliver their messages back to the first person so he can have me deliver a message back to the second person... ARGH!  BORING BORING BORING!

Interesting, which missions are these? I don't recall a lot that're like that. Most are pew pew pew.

there were some that came out where you had to go to memory alpha talk to o'brian he sends you to ds9 then you return to him. I think those are what Hurple was talking about.

I've had two so far... some kind of diplomatic missions.  One was on Vulcan.
