Your Most Unique Builds/Character Designs
« on: August 12, 2015, 02:03:20 AM »
So this is my first time back to the CoH community since the shutdown, but I'm so excited to see it's still going strong. I've been going through Paragon Chat and Titan Icon and torturing myself looking over old saved costumes and chat logs (that one got really emotional).

That being said, I'm feeling nostalgic and wanted to chat about some of my favorite alts (I was a depraved altaholic), particularly the ones I really wish I could play right now. I'm hoping you guys will have some of your own to share and commiserate on.

Barnes, the Power Armored Defender
FORCE FIELD / BEAM RIFLE

When I started this build, I had been reading about the upcoming SWTOR and I thought it was really cool how they had ranged tanks. I was determined to recreate something similar. This toon was built around using pool powers like Fighting and Presence to give him mild tankability for when there were no real tanks available. I really enjoyed playing differently than the game wanted me to and had a lot of fun with this toon. I would often run in toward mobs with AoE and cone attacks (that beam rifle was bad ass) and top it off with Provoke and Personal Force Field to let the aggro rain down on me while I sat back and watched my teammates unleash the DPS fury upon the enemy. And yes, the design aspect of this character was based on the Fallout series.

I loved being able to say "I can tank" and then actually do it successfully. It didn't really serve any particular need other than being extremely fun to play. Sadly, the game ended before I ever got to make any real progress with this guy and he will be forever left behind on Talos Island with the other early twenty-somethings.

What really unique playstyle toons are you guys feeling nostalgic about?

My main character Auroxis, an Empathy/Rad Defender, didn't start off as anything special. Over time as I got more experience with him, I tried pushing the limits in terms of solo-play by doing things uncharacteristic of a "support" character. Didn't create a "solo-build" or anything, just made sure I took the important damage powers and slotted them accordingly, using them whenever I had downtime between buffs+heals.

I used Lore pets+buff synergy to take down a rikti pylon in 1:20 minutes and posted about it on the forums, which naturally got the reply of "lore pets don't count, you didn't solo it by yourself". So I took that as a challenge, and solo'd an AV without lore pets.

Shortly before the game was closed down I began experimenting with a Fire/Dark Melee build.  I was trying to pair Fire up with an attack set that provided some damage mitigation and a heal to bolster Fire's lack of both (Yeah, I know, Fire had a heal....but it needed an assist).  Dark Melee provided debuffs and an extra heal.  By level 20 I began to notice a substantial improvement in my Fire tank's survivability.  Dad-gum shame that the game closed before I could take it further.

I played in CoH beta, came into the game and made my first, beloved character Irradical. She was a Radiation/Electrical Defender. One guy, a tattoo artist with really incredible skills at drawing, liked her costume so much he drew a scene of her and sent me the picture. She was quickly followed up with by Vae Victis, my Dark Melee/Invulnerability Scrapper. Due to circumstances I do not want to go into, I left the game for several years.

When I returned, beloved though my characters were, I decided to change servers and start a new slate. It did not take long to develop a long list of characters. One of the ones whose concept I greatly enjoyed developing and playing around was my Fire Melee/Dark Armor Tanker, Pitchfire.

I had played one of my melee characters in a couple sewer missions with people who had powers with annoyance potential they were doing little to control. Somewhat pissed, I decided that I would make a character with as much annoyance potential as I could cram in. This resulted in my Gravity Control/Energy Assault Dominator, Sunburst. The idea was that I would have plenty of annoyance possibilities between Energy attacks and their knockbacks, Propel, Singularity, Dimension Shift, and Phase Shift.

As it turned out, he was not only a lot of fun to play but also very useful on a team. I had not considered that Gravity Control roots and holds. So being friendly I could lock things in place and not worry about knockback annoying others. Conversely, I could easily knock things away from teammates who needed the distance. And of course using a portal to dump a guy into a pack of singularities was great humor value.

I gotta give my most unique character design to my very first Hero I made on CoH back when when it came out in 2004 (I lost my account and eventually recreated him on CoH years later on CoH Freedom). His name was Bolt Templar. Taking the name "Templar" from Blizzard Entertainment's StarCraft series at the time. Templar was meant as a special honor or protector or guardian in the StarCraft world...so i carried over that meaning to CoH. Bolt Templar was a Mutant Electric Blaster/Manipulator. His main colors consisted of black and neon green (or electric green). His hair was long, straight, and white with glowing green eyes that matched his main color. He had a metal plate over his right eye (similar to Kano in Mortal Kombat series). His top was black long sleeve tights with green electricity designs that went up from his wrists, up his sleeves and onto the top of his chest. He had small black spiked paulderons on his shoulders with a green outline on the shoulder pad itself and the spikes's tips were the same shade of green. He also had black colored banded wraps on his hands. He had a large studded black belt with the buckles and studs colored green. His pants were baggy black pants with a large green lightning bolt down each side of his legs. His boots were hidden under his pants but were banded black boots with the same green lightning bolt design that's on his pants so that the lightning bolts seem to stream down to the ground. This was just his first initial design when he's first made. He has an alternate outfit too that gives him more of a "Raziel from Soul Reaver"-like look. But his first and main look is the one that really gives him his uniqueness. His electrical attacks are neon green colored as well. To me, colors set a character's theme along with his powers. I mean, Superman is Red, Blue, and Yellow....Neon Green and Black is Bolt Templar's.

I didn't spend a great deal of time creating unique characters and bios. But, there are at least three characters I believe deserve mention.

Player 1 and his teammate Player 2.  I cannot describe their costumes, but they had used binds or macros to communicate with common phrases used in games.

I can't recall the specifics, but I was impressed.

Piggy Bank - This fellow would have an identically named and costumed character on each server and would accept some inf from one server and meet you on another server and give you the same amount back. Tipping was optional.

Naked Mole Rat - This fellow was a great bridge and mentor at level 96. He looked how one would imagine a naked mole rat to look. And his speech was always slightly amusing, as I imagined a British accent with the use of words like "Chums" and "Mate".
Those who have no idea what they are doing genuinely have no idea that they don't know what they're doing. - John Cleese

I made this exact type of toon as a Brute. He was very fun but I never liked Fire Armor set that much. I DID do a Tank as a Shield/Dark Melee that was pretty awesome and a Elec Armor/Dark Melee Brute...both of which were very fun to play. Dark Melee is one of those sets that, once you get the hang of it, are very fun to play. I personally liked that it had two moves that were high dmg and all Negative damage to boot (IIRC it was the heal and the tier 9 move midnight grasp). I buzz-sawed through many baddies with that one.

Made a build the other day for a brute, a Elec Melee/Shield Defense and used both the Lightning Rod and Shield Charge PLUS picked the Jumping Power Pool for Spring Attack. Three chances to TP to a group and do dmg in the process while keeping my Fury up. Even managed to get get my defenses at 45%+ for all positional attacks. Decent HP buff was also helpful but I miss a healing move like in Dark Melee.

I had a Spines/DA Scrapper named Ms.Conduct.  Her story went something like this:

A member of a team of mutant mercenaries for hire.  On a job for the Malta, team was backstabbed and slaughtered with the exception of Ms.Conduct who manages to survive.  With the help of Azuria, Ms.Conduct finds and tortures some Circle of Thorn to open a portal to hell so she can save her team.

In hell, Ms.Conduct tricks death, cheats him and escapes with the souls of all her teammates.  Unfortunately, without the teammates bodies to keep their souls in the physical plane of existance, they would slowly slip back into hell.  Ms.Conduct becomes the host body of her 11 murdered teammates.  She carries them, nurtures them, keeps their spirits safe within her.

The teammates knowing if Ms.Conduct dies, they would slip back to hell.  So they help her, fight for her, protect her by killing any threat in their way.  They physically alter Ms.Conduct making her a juggernaut vs any opponent.

Wish I had a better pic showing the Ghost Aura swirling around the Death Shroud/Cloak of Fear animations.

At some point in the later years of CoH I re-rolded an old relatively unplayed character named Silent Shot from an Archery/Devices to an Archery/Darkness manipulation blaster.  I had other better liked */devices blasters and I wanted to try out darkness manipulation after it had gone live.  He was working out great and was a blast to play.  The quick attacks of archery synergized well with the heavy hitting dark attacks if they made it too close to me.  He was somewhere in the 20s when the shutdown came.  I still wonder what he would have been like fully slotted and IO'd out.

I don't really believe he counted as unique playstyle, but my Spider had a pretty neat theme.
Take a stab at what it was.

Good ol' Operative was a Mu Spider. Up until I got the Mu Mastery powers, he was just a regular looking mook, with the cool black armor and such. Afterwards, though, I changed his whole theme to match the Mu guys. I tried to make him as tanky as possible with the Incarnate powers, to round him out a bit more.

Lots of folk told me he looked like a power ranger.

I agree....very well done.

Thanks.  Also had a blurb about the Ascension chest and belt costume pieces, invented by technologist and mystics as gravitational homing beacons so that the souls could not stray far from Ms Conduct.  The volcano on her back is where the spirits enter/exit her body.  Even used the Phantom Lore pets for thematic reasons.  My most unique character for sure.

I never took pictures of my characters but they did tend to have an very specific background a short origin story and often motivation behind what they did, why they did it and that often affected their combat style and power choices.

Example.. here is Apex my WP/SS tank

The META project. It started as a line item in the FIST (First Infantry Shock Troopers) project budget listed under advanced engineering. The FIST project had good success with their exoskelton project yet found the time need to design, develop a battle suit and train a pilot would never allow them to create a fighting force large enough to deal with situations like the Rikti and Rularuu invasions. META (Military Engineered Tactically Advanced) started a genome project utilizing nano-machines to attempt to create super soldiers.

Apex is the pinnacle of that project. The nano-machines in his system have altered his endocrine, nervous and skeletal system granting him increased strength and super human endurance. His bones are the hardness of Corundum giving him improved resistance. Most importantly his ability to heal damage is tied into his endocrine system. Essentially the harder he fights, the faster he regenerates.. He also has the ability to amplify his adrenal system which pushes his already increased strength to superhuman levels.

Background End

Accordingly Apex is a Tank who is essentially very hard to kill.

Here is a look at his build.

  • 10% JumpHeight
  • 10% SpeedJumping
  • MezResist(Immobilized) 15.95%

  • 3.5% (0.06 End/sec) Recovery
  • 88% (6.87 HP/sec) Regeneration
  • 6% Resistance(Psionic)
  • 10% SpeedRunning

So what does this mean..

Apex is softcapped to S/L/E/N
37% to Fire and Cold
32.9% to Psi.

He is also 70% Resistant to S/L
48.9% to Psi
and 11.5% to everything else

Apex also has Perma Rage which gives him an 80% Damage Boost when he is not affected by the Rage crash..

Apex never runs out of endurance.. Between Stamina. Quick Recovery, a Miracle and a Numina  and three Performance Shifter Procs Apex can fight all day long and never gets tired.

Apex has a lot of regen.

In his normal state. Apex regenerates at 524% or 61 HP per Second. This is him standing still fighting no one and Rise to the Challenge turned off.

Fighting a singular Foe with RTTC on moves his regen to 808% and 94HP per second

Fighting a Max of 8 pushed his regen to 1206% and 141 HP per second

If needed he can push beyond that limit for a very short time to 1596% and 186HP per second (Melee Core Hybrid Incarnate Power). This also has the affect of increasing his S/L Resistance to the max, Increasing his Psi resistance to 85% and His other resistances to 48%

His senses are also somewhat more acute and he can maintain incredible focus for long periods of time which grants him a 25.8% to Hit Buff as well as +56% Accuracy..

Apex is always ready for a fight. He has no problem taking on massive amounts of foes because he knows the harder he fights the harder he is to take down.He never runs.. He never backs down.. Apex once stood toe to toe with Marauder in battle while his teammates recovered and Marauder could not take him down.

Is Apex my most unique.. no.. but he is typical of how I tend to build many characters.

I was really bored early that fateful summer, I had just leveled and IOed my fire/time corruptor, and it turned out I really liked it.

I tend to give my best costumes to the characters I enjoy playing.

Bison Boy!  He started out as an experiment and just got crazy fun to play.  He started from the thought that Superman and Power Man are effectively the same build (SS/Inv) but one flies and the other wears a blouse and tiara (okay, the 21st century version wears muscle shirts and might be more SJ than SS).  But clearly they are not on the same scale, and I don't just mean security clearance/incarnate.  So how does one end up with Power Man rather than Superman in CoH?  So I created the character to figure our the answer: a furry brown mutant with horn and hooves, fists and fur.  My first decision was to play foolishly and take the Fighting pool, intentionally giving myself poorer versions of powers I could get from my Primary and Secondary sets.  But the animation for Kick, coming from this hooved character, was hysterically charming.  And then I wandered into the Presence pool, again intent on taking the poor man's choice for Taunt.  But when I hit the point where I could take Intimidate and Cause Panic, and there was this muscle bound minotaur looking toon snorting and bellowing and stomping and shoving entire crowds of enemies around on my screen, the experiment changed.
It took a lot of respecs to balance these ideas out and make Bison Boy a respectable tank, a real tank.  And there were some frustrating levels to play through with the holes I was leaving in the design.  But I think he taught me a lot about tank designs; how to get him a decent running speed (again, he was a bull, needed to be a hard charger) without going into a third pool, how to time my crowd control powers to cover my defensive gaps; etc.  I was eagerly plotting and planning for how to incorporate the fifth powers from those two pools.

All my builds can be considered unique...I had 32 Level 50 Heroines and 6 Villainess level 15-40...

My main is unusual...Felicia Divine (Dark Defender).

When I started Jan 2007 everyone was playing Tanks and Scrappers, there were a few Stormers who were popular in PvP but not in PvE since they blew opponents away from the tanks and scrappers, they were annoying on a team...Healers were thought not to be needed and were weak...

I saw the potential of the dark defender...I did not go the traditional route of basing my powers sets around buff/debuff...in other words TarPatch was always required at low level...I did not get it until mid level...I went the blaster/defense route...

I knew opponents always close in so I took Air Superiority at level 4...with Gloom, DarkBlast and Moonbeam I easily took out opponents...with Fly I could get to missions fast and easily...I had Recall Friend to get the team to the mission...important in the Hollows :) Then Howling Twilight for mass rezzing the team...Twilights Grasp for team heals...I could lead, guide, protect my team...people realized how useful I could be...ShadowFall for my defence and the teams defence...

Midlevel I got Tarpatch (debuff), Darkest Night (-accuracy, damage), Fearsome Gaze and Tenebrous Tentacles for lockdown, but this is where more ingenuity begins...I got Dimension Shift and Phase Shift...this combination lets me be untouchable when 3 slotted to 90 second recharge. Also having Invisibilty helps speed through Task Forces.

High Level is when I reached AV Killer status...slotting my powers with special enhancements that raise damage to all other powers...I took Power Epic Pool...Conserve Power, Power Build Up...Force of Nature for defence. With Blackstar powered up I could mass wipe most opponents...Power Build Up, 4 red inspirations...BOOM! oh I cant forget my sidekick Dark Servant...never really needed it but he was there as a distraction.

Yes a healer can be just as good as a tank or scrapper! Yes I can PvP with this build. Why because...you cant touch this :p
Before I had my character enhanced I was beaten in PvP a few times but I could hold my own. This character was made for teaming and could carry a team on to victory. If the team bailed I could still finish a TF or mission solo.

This was all before Incarnates...I was not fond of the new system...it unbalanced the game...farming was a must...teaming with non-incarnates was terribly boring...too much power corrupts. If the game was to return, incarnates should be changed to level 51-54 characters and new content made with higher level villains to match...and there needed to be more content for the lower levels for the older players to get back into game play.

So many newer players were farmed in AE and had no clue there were other zones...let's not have the mistakes of the past repeated.

I don't know how unique they were, but two come to my mind.

One was Blue Widower, a male Widow. While playing him, at least one player told me, "I never thought of making a male Widow before." (I made another one to become my tribute to The Monarch, of The Venture Bros., because he needed the wrist-mounted dart-shooters.)

The other was an attempt to make a citizen who had taken to the streets to fight crime with ordinary fighting skills and strength. I tried to take powers that were as close to "un-super" as I could find, with the idea of seeing how well I could do with him, but he didn't get very far (he quit because he didn't like hospital food nearly that much ;) ). Kind of like my attempt to make an Oblivion character who didn't use magic or enchanted items (although alchemy was okay, since its essence is just chemistry and/or pharmacology). In a magic-based game, it's hard to work with a non-magic-using character; the same with a non-super in a superhero game.

Good point Heatstroke...dark defenders are supposed to be buffer/debuffers.

Super Firebug your character was unusual. Some had tried it, but not many. I remember a panhandler sitting by Ms Liberty who was doing the same thing you were but that's the only character I remember going none powered. He was fun and cool.

I hosted 48 costume contests, one of which was, come as your favorite hero event...we guessed lots of DC and Marvel types...one person came as a police officer...I asked is this your entry...he said yes...my father is a police officer and the best hero I know...THAT is humbling...it's true and it shows you don't have to be super-powered to be a hero!!!!

Now for my most Unique heroine build...Controller...any primary but mind...and for secondary Dark or Storm...why...pets galore from both sets...I like the Dark Controller and the Electric Stormer.
 Divine Stormbringer - level 50 Electric/Storm Controller
low level you need the cages (holds) I took the 3 earliest ones...then steamy mists for team stealth and defence...I always get air superiority and fly as well...it suits my playstyle
mid level I took Leadership - assault, tactics, maneuvers and a few more attacks...jolting chain and synaptic overload
high level is the fun part...gremlins (1st pet), tornado (2nd pet it is a summon power), hurricane, lightning storm...then for range power and surviving against almost anything...Ice Epic Powers...Ice Blast, Frozen Armor, Hibernate (like a self rez when your about to die, click this and recharge) and fun fun fun Ice Storm!

This is a hard to use build, you need lots of patience.

Dark Controller has all the fun powers I like plus Umbral Beast in primary power and Dark Servant in secondary power...problem is Dark Controller did not come out until late in the game so I did not get a chance to enjoy it. but if the game comes back as classic...this will be my first build!

I think I would like to try the Fire/Stormer too!
Redside - Crab Spider with Mace Mastery you can call Reinforcements (2 Disruptors), Summon Spiderlings (2 spiderlings) and Summon Blaster (1 Arachnobot Blaster)...I never got to level 50 to unlock this and eventually they lowered it to level 20 so I could but by then I was max leveling several heroes and had little interest redside.

Another build that was overlooked was the Gravity/Empathy Controller
I created Deep Reach before Felicia Divine...
Deep Reach was able to PvP and was very effective at Hamidon Raids...other than that this build needs patience...you spam holds and wait for the crushing effects...your pet Singularity is great for catching others, watching your back and acting as a distraction.
Though I could PvP...I am not a big PvP fan...and this build is great for teaming...but not so much for soloing.
As a team member you can heal, rez, buff, and lockdown opponents...you need teammates to take opponents down.

just for fun I tried to put a non-powered character together in Mid's:
Normal Person: Martial Arts/Super Reflex Scrapper
Primary: Thunder Kick, Storm Kick, Cobra Strike (first 3 options)
Secondary: Focused Fighting, Focused Senses, Agile (first 3 options)
Pool1 : Boxing, Kick, Tough, Weave
 Pool2 : Meneuvers, Assault, Tactics
Pool3 : Aid Other, Stimulant, Aid Self, Resuscitate
Pool4 : Challenge, Provoke, Intimidate, Invoke Panic
Epic (Body Mastery): Conserve Power, Focused Accuracy, Physical Perfection

So my intimidating doctor is viable (willpower secondary I think would also be a good choice)
Why I did not choose Air Superiority and Flurry...because the rest of the abilities in those sets do not fit the theme and having  several melee attacks isn't necessary because of the fast recharge rates of what I already have.

The Chia Avenger was one that got a lot of attention for a time.

He was a normal chia pet that sat on the back of the desk of an alchemists near a small window. The alchemist was always casting spells and mixing components near the little chia and over time the clay soaked in random elements. The chia eventually became somewhat aware and began to also soak in the goings on around him. The alchemist was a bag guy doing bad things, and the chia grew to somehow know this and hate it. People found the alchemist and did something bad to him. In the ensuing magical battle something happened that was the catalyst the chia needed to come fully self aware and to life. Of course, being a less than intelligent clay sculpture with sprouts for hair, the chia really didn't understand any of this. The chia grabbed a letter opener off of the alchemist's desk and went off into the night to find bad men who were doing bad things with bad magic and do bad stuff to them.

He was tiny orange huge model with green hair who had to be reminded to wear cloths, but he was just a BS/Regen scrapper, so nothing special there.

I don't like to put down someone's idea but I have to sometimes...
Heatstroke...sub in Invulnerability for Willpower and you have your average tank 90% of players use.
META is taken from an rpg and a video game (not positive but might have been HALO)
FIST (First Infantry Shock Trooper) is the name of one of the villians from the first Villians and Vigilantes RPG set Crisis At Crusader Citadel.

I see nothing original here.
Nice collection of tidbits from many sources though

Gyre I love the Chia pet angle, that is unique :)

Ok lets dissect this..

My Willpower is unique to me.. and Unique to me because he has a ridiculous amount of regen.    Basically I have found that he is unkillable as a tank.. Now I dont quite understand what the Invulnerability tank has to do with the discussion.. but ok...

Ive never heard of META in a video game.. so again. unique to me..

FIST is something that I borrowed from the Champions RPG..

oh yeah I'd did say this btw

Is Apex my most unique.. no.. but he is typical of how I tend to build many characters.

Sorry I didnt meet your particular criteria for being " unique " but then again I wasnt trying to meet yours anyway..

One time when I was bored, I made an Energy/Energy Blaster with the sole purpose of knocking everyone back. So when I unlocked Power Push at Level 18, I fully spec'd it with Knockback recipes and enhancements and went into Atlas Park. I then found as many lowbies as I could and would use Power Push and send them flying across the map. Sadly I have no video since I didn't have FRAPS at the time :( :(

I believe I originally made the costume for the fire/time just by meandering with all of the pieces, until I accidentally found that the black/blue elemental skin went really well with gold/white armor.

Then I found out the arcane hood went really well with the roman armor for that color scheme, so it sort of escalated from there.

The last year or so of the game i was playing with AT bending concepts. I had a FF/Psi Defender that had monster ranged defense. While he was fun and could be a fill in tank when needed.

My Fire/Sonic corrupter was my favorite. Only had three sonic powers the first/last and the personal bubble. The build was a resistance build with as much defense as I could throw in. Sonic Bubble, Tough and Charged armor made up the core. Nearly capped S/L and roughly 55% energy.  Friends of mine with Brutes were going your tougher than I am we all go down and your still blasting away. Got recruited for speed ITF runs where they would take on the final boss fight and I would be sent to solo the 300 kills. My new team announcement was I am slightly squishy. i really meant I am SLIGHTLY squishy. Any team buff and it was like OMG. Granted it took till the upper levels to really come together with charged armor.

With that being so much fun decided to try a Brute like Dominator. He looked like a Lava rock monster and even fooled friends who should have known better. In chat one friend asked how are you making Domination appear over the foes heads. This was a Fire/Earth DOM with Hot feet and mud pots. Vulnerable to being mezzed but if things were going well i could pop a BF or domination when it came back up.

I did this too with my first character, the magically-fueled MAGI-1 android. Happiest moment was coming back at level 50 and punting those Hellion punks that killed me at level 1 over City Hall.

Most unique characters... phew...

First that comes to mind was Longbow Assault. I always liked the Longbow as being the army that was on the good-guy's side for once, but I was always disappointed they didn't show up more around Paragon, especially at higher leveled areas (not including PvP). So one day I made one! I was a Blaster fan to the max, and did my best to recreate the costume pattern to the best I could, gave her Assault Rifle and Devices (though had it been open at the time I would have used Beam Rifle/Martial Combat) and set her loose!
She was a covert ops specialist, preparing areas with mines, caltrops and gun drones before luring enemies in by sniping their leader with a well placed shot. Despite that, she was also uncannily good at kicking down doors and lighting the area up with automatic fire, using her prototype rocket boots to keep her out of reach and mobile.
I had a ton of fun RPing as a Longbow operative, especially when dealing with the Vanguard or fighting in PvP.

However, most of the more unique heroes I encountered were made by my dad, particularly two of his favorites:
Surtyr, based on the King of Fire Giants in Norse mythology, with a Broadsword and Rgen (don't ask me why), was a towering red giant with coal-black face and hands, and eventually heavy armor.
Then, there was Jupiter's Eye, a Gravity/Storm Summoning Controller based on the idea of a gaseous being from Jupiter being accidentally captured and returned to Earth.

I tried making a HellBoy tribute.
Named him Heck Guy.
I read the descriptions of the origins, and mutant sounded more like him than magic.
And to get a pistol, not a temp power, I made him a blaster.
He actually wasn't completely horrible, but I had to be on my A game to play him.
Constant buffing/healing helped a lot, when I could get it.

A 'civilian' build huh?  Interesting that your thinking remained on melee archetypes which are max health enhanced.  The clear choice is to start with a Mastermind, or possibly a Stalker, to remove as much of the game's automatic enhancements as possible, and then proceed to find innocuous powers.  Actually my first thought would be to simply slot brawl and sprint and then just unslot any other powers you have to take.  But I assume we are talking a character theme that incorporates a full suite of 24 abilities.  So...

Again: mastermind, ignore all pets and just take the 4 combat powers (just a crazy man with a gun/bow/whatever).  Leadership pool is an obvious choice, damsels in distress get the blood of nearby heroes boiling, so that works.  The Medicine pool is another great choice for a non-combatant role.  Punch & Kick, but I'm not so inclined to give Tough & Weave a nod.  One other common pool... I'd pick the teleportation pool saying the character's one real talent is the ability to hack the medical teleportation system, but some powers from the Leaping or Speed pools would also prove irrelevant.  A few picks from your secondary and then focus on one Epic/Patron pool as your top end achievement.  With Leadership, Medicine, and Teleport as your backbone, you could easily become any team's Delivery Man!

I had three toons that were hard to level-up.  They never got invited to team, for some reason.

Scaredy-Cat Man - who would always run and hide whenever the team would get into a fight.  He got invited to teams, but got kicked often.

Captain Useless - for whom I picked the absolutely least useful powers possible.

Doorsit Boy - would get the occasional invite to a power-level team.  Ha!
