Praetorian Hamidon
« on: October 23, 2015, 09:20:27 AM »
Hi.
I'm actually running a Mutants and Masterminds campaign (tabletop rpg) integrating the post-Praetorian Wars City of Heroes setting.
I wondered if we can find a Praetorian Hamidon visual somewhere (even an unfinished one) ?

Praetorian Hamidon was never shown. This is as good as we've got:

the Avatar:

and the Seed:

Extrapolating from that, Hamidon himself is probably a great big amorphous blob with earthy bits and tentacles and spines and crap in it.

Vee, you are SICK, SICK, SICK!

Do it again. :)

It was never stated, but the Lore AMA has one developer speculating he may have been more kaiju than blob. But they never got far enough on plans for it to be addressed concretely even in the Lore AMA (so far).

Edit: there are also the tentacles outside the sonic fences, so... that may be related?

I used CIT before they even joined the Titan network! But then I left for a long ol' time, and came back. Now I edit the wiki.

I'm working on sorting the Lore AMAs so that questions are easily found and linked: http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Lore_AMA/Sorted Tell me what you think!

Just based off of the vague descriptions there, I'm sad that we didn't get to see it for ourselves... I imagine it would have been pretty awesome to fight... :(

Were there plans to fight Praetorian Hami?  There wasn't any indication of that in the last beta.

From what I've gathered from the AMAs and various other sources, there were plans to Praetorian Hamidon to be the "big bad" of the praetorian storyline that you fought in the next incarnate trial after defeating Tyrant in the Magisterium.

However, by the time Issue 23 was in pre-production, players were complaining about 'praetorian fatigue', so the plan was altered to end the storyline there, and the Praetorian Hami idea was shelved.

If I recall correctly, the blue side track left a small bastion of humanity in Praetoria.  That would have left a jumping off point later for an attack on Praetorian Hami.

There were tentacles outside of First Ward?! Man, I wish I can go back there and see it for myself.  :(

Makes me angrier the more I think about everything that was planned to happen but we never got to it. Also the fact that we had just got a new incarnate power and never got up to omega.

We simply never will find another game that comes close to being as great as cox was without completely mimicking the entire game. (Like all of those fantasy games that try to mimic wow.)

You could see the Praetorian Hamidon in the background of the mission to rescue Marauder in Issue 24 - it was just an Avatar of Hamidon model, but its size was gigantic - it was taller than any building in Imperial City.

Praetoria was the single greatest thing that CoH ever did - the way it integrated story and gameplay innovations and told a story across multiple issues that went from simple street level activity to a cataclysmic dimensional war that destroyed Praetorian Earth was incredible.

I don't think that was Hami himself but rather an avatar or other hami-spawned creature, since there were 2 or 3 of them stomping around at once.

Don't even get me started on how much I loved it. The endgame was best any mmo to date has, the zones were beautiful, the npcs the powers, the story. dang it... I want to play so badly!

They were probably something similar to the GMs stomping around in The Hive is my guess. Not the big bad goo-monster himself, but he's probably not too far away.

for me praetoria was always the place no one wanted to team in, usually because things were going-on on red or blue side and no one had time for praetoria, this meant that most of us had to slow grind through it, and it had a very dull white concrete jail cell feel to it, like the whole place was on lock down. and it was on lock down, it was a pretty foolish move to separate it from the rest of the active player areas and disallow people to leave until LV20. even worse was their idea to only instate difficult, low level content. they could have done much more to make it workable, again the separated the player base, typically there were only 11 people in praetoria on Protector, everyone else was running TFs, SFs trials and raids or chilling and talking under atlas, or playing it up in crazy AE teams.

Praetoria; No AE, No real focal point for chilling and talking (it was quite far from everything), no TFs, the raids are way too short and way too low level, there was no access to the market etc.. And there was no allowance or instigation for heroes and villains to go there, and even if they did there was nothing to do except walk around, they couldn't pick a side, they couldn't play praetorian missions.  they kept talking about making a higher level praetorian zone, and most people effected by the lowbie zone were eagerly awaiting it, then when it was announced that it was going to come in the form of i-trials, a lot of people got mad.

what they could have done; the following would have possibly saved the game.

1: make Praetorian XP able to get you extra powers, such as more powerful attacks to deal with the harder content, and additional inherent archetype powers, like ranged defense for blasters or MM style pet controls for controllers. not just this I'm sure there was a lot more that could be developed and tempting for players of all levels.

2: allow highbies to join the loyalists and or resistance, gaining a toggle self exemplaring power which allows them to enjoy the praetorian missions on their highbies and gain the extra powers and niceties talked about above. this would also help praetorians because suddenly they have well slotted and possibly purple enhanced highbies helping out on missions. and most important of all it would make praetoria seem less isolated and less of a ghost town.

all this would have encouraged more people to buy going rogue, and would have given the "New start" that they were hoping for (just like CoV was a new start that teased players to start over). and it could have formed the outline for future parallel universe/ other planetary starting points and their marketing structure.

cut off, end of lunch break not sure if I typed everything I wanted to say

There is always another way. But it might not work exactly like you may desire.

A wise old rabbit once told me "Never give-up!, Trust your instincts!" granted the advice at the time led me on a tripped-out voyage out of an asteroid belt, but hey it was more impressive than a bunch of rocks and space monkies.
