Title: Amazing Spider-Man 2
Post by: Kaos Arcanna on May 03, 2014, 07:21:47 PM

Quite possible spoilers to follow. If not by me, than by others who reply.

On the whole, I liked the movie, but then I also like Garfield's Spidey more than I did Toby Maguire's.  Maguire's Spider-Man was much more like the Spidey of the 60s, IMO.
Garfield's Spider-Man reminds me more of the Spidey from the 70s-- which was when I started reading comics. Sure, Pete in the 70s had the Parker luck, but he also had a
fairly upbeat attitude. Garfield is much better at making the quips, and I can fully believe his Spider-Man would have a fairly good public reputation ...

Spoiler for Hidden:
And would actually wear a fireman's hat when blasting Electro with water.
:D

I do think the movie was a bit too long, and Rhino ultimately proved to be superfluous to the plot, but on the whole I liked the movie.

I hated Maguire's Spider-man, but I liked the new guy in the first movie.  He definitely seemed more like Spider-man ought to be, to me - in other words, *not* a whiny little bug-eyed secondhand Frodo with no chin who can't quip worth snot.

That said, I'm leery of this sequel because both Electro and Rhino just look terrible to me.

IMO, Andrew Garfield : Spider-man :: Hayden Christensen : Anakin Skywalker. Probably won't be seeing this one cause I straight up hated the first ASM.

Agree with the Hawk. I can't stand Garfield's take. yeah he can make quips, but he also comes off as an entitled snot nosed punk. the last two minutes of the first movie? "Oh, hey, i want to bang this hot chick, so let me just blow off that promise I made to the dieing man who saved my ass" pretty much summed up his interpretation for me.

If you go see the second movie you'll see that Peter does feel conflicted over his promise to Gwen's dad and what Gwen and he want.

Just saw this...I like Garfield better than Toby as well. Just seems more like Parker. I like the father story line. Adds more to the whole arc. Wild take on Electro and future villains thanks to Oscorp. Interesting changes. Sometimes I'm way against changing the original story, but these crazy story arcs and fantastic visuals are making me look at the whole story as something new. Always enjoy Stan Lee cameo. Just my two cents, folks.

Overall I walked out of the theater Sunday thinking that ASM2 was a hot mess. The potrayal of Electro and Harry were basically annoying.  I felt like the franchise took a step back on this one. Thank goodness DOFP comes out in 2 weeks. ASM2 makes me really wish Marvel Studios could get control of all the Marvel Universe.

+1

Garfield, Stone and the look of the Spider-Man costume are the only things to shine in this movie.

The extraordinarily poor writing has turned this into a train wreck of a movie.

Both better choices for their respective roles than Tobey Maguire. ;)

Spoilers ahoy

I both agree and disagree here. Electro felt like a 90s Batman villain, especially Foxx hamming it up way too much, and Harry's entire arc/transformation/ and even a frigging battle being crammed in was way too much. I wasn't a fan of the Dad mystery subplot, but it would have been pretty hard to remove, but it could have at least been trimmed down.

However, I think aside from those issues it was a pretty fantastic movie. Best portrayal of Spidey yet on screen, Parker and Stacy's chemistry was palpable, his scenes with Aunt May were great, and the action and effects were amazing. I liked the score, the bright look of the movie, overall it felt like a big step up from Amazing Spiderman. If Sony would just do a villain right, its their biggest flaw here.

Both my 5 year old and I are really liked it overall though, but it definitely has its weak spots.

Okay now that it's been out for a while, I'm going to add this ....

Spoiler for Hidden:
I totally think the kid should have been Miles Morales. That would have rocked.

Agreed!

Spoiler for Hidden:
all they would've had to do was have his name be Miles, nothing more, just a slight nod to the fans. Alas the producers seem to very anti-Miles, per some recent interviews, so I guess that wasn't an option.

I actually liked Jamie Foxx's Electro: I thought it was a decent character backstory for Electro that he's this Spiderman-obsessed person that just wants some attention, and he finally snaps.  I think it was an interesting blend of 70s villain with modern broken bird backstory.

And I really liked Garfield's Spiderman in the sequel more than the first movie.  I think his handling of Gwen's father was a bit clumsy, but the Spiderman that reaches out to bullied kids, that oozes bravado at street criminals, that actually tries to talk down villains rather than just fight them, to me that's the closest I've seen to my mental image of Spiderman.  That to me is as much a reflection of New York City as Batman is a reflection of (fictional) Gotham.  Like Kaos, I could believe that Spiderman would be a darling of New York.

I know some people thought it was silly, but the scene with NYFD?  Awesome.  That to me is Spiderman in a nutshell.

I do agree with people who thought the writing wasn't sharp, and the direction muddled at times.  But I walked out of the theater thinking I just saw Spiderman appear in a Spiderman movie, possibly for the first time in recent history.  That counted for a lot for me.
