Title: How old are you?
Post by: ZoeyLovecraft90 on April 08, 2014, 11:13:13 PM
I guess I shouldn't ask this outright.
So what age were you when you first played City of Heroes?
I wish to know the age group of the community I belonged to for so long.

So It would be kewl to write a short story like this

"I was 16 when I first played City of Heroes.
Willpower had just come out and Ae was just being put into the game I think.
I was introduced to it by a friend who was in his 40s at the time.
I've known more women than men who played this game with me
All older than me"
True story btw
Which is weird because I always tend to befriend people who are WAY older than me in real life. May have something to do with why I got along in COH so well
Are you guys all old hippies?
:o

I am not a hippie.

However, I was...*calculates* *mumbles* carry the one...*mumbles*

32 when I was first started playing CoH in September of 2004. Yes, that would make me a cranky old man now.  :P

Although, I was first introduced to the game when it was still in Alpha testing in 2000-01.

I frequented the forums back then and tried to get people to see some reason and stop with the "I will hate this game if it only has 6 million possible costume part combinations at launch." complaints. However, I got sidetracked with college and other things for a few years. Then when I came out to California to visit my brother and some friends, they'd had the game for a couple of months. As soon as I got back home, I bought it and subscribed until they told me I couldn't pay them any more.

Most of the people I played with were older than me too.

I learned Cobol programming in high school with punch cards.  They made us buy our own packs of cards  :'( , so of course, one either got good with typing or it became expensive fast.

Mine's in my profile, 58 years old.  I'm the guy who renamed SHIELD for Marvel Comics in 1990.  I watched an episode of Twin Peaks in a hotel room with George RR Martin and his fellow Wild Card authors.  I was an invited guest speaker at Superman's 50th Birthday party.  I bought Amazing Fantasy #15 from a drugstore for a dime, read the first Super-skrull Fantastic Four comic when it was new and became a huge Kirby fan by 1968.

I made my living many years working in COBOL/Z OS/DB2/SQL Big-Iron Fortune 500 company's systems (began with punch cards in 1981) and now I'm a Requirements Analyst on an Agile line.

Discovered COH in 2006 at the age of 50

I was 12 when I started playing CoH back in 2004. I was 20 years old when it shut down. My teenage years were spent playing City of Heroes...Hell, it was my social life. I'm 21 now, and going to be 22 in a few months. And I still wish that City of Heroes was back. But looking forward to City of Titans.

Count me in the keypunched computer cards generation.  Some of the first cards I punched were
for a program (written in Fortran IV) to print a "picture" of the Starship Enterprise on the line printer
of an IBM 1130 computer.

I was amused -- some others, not so much...   ;D

I bought one of the first TRS-80 Model I's that got to my hometown. Still have it, somewhere - it might
even still work, but probably not -- haven't powered it up in decades ... literally.

These days, I dabble with Perl and Python on *nix boxes - amusingly, they still pay me for this  ;D

You probably don't want to know about my underwear, but I have T-shirts I wear that are older than
many of the folks in here, or the colleagues I work with... I wore an Amdahl T-shirt to work the other
day, and only one other person knew what it was....    ;D

I won't tell you to get off my lawn... I pay the neighbor kid to tell you that!    :D

Cheers,
4

I started playing when I was 18, right around Issue 10, I think. June 2007. I was 23 when the servers went dark. I'm 25 now. After watching Spider-man 3, I had this urge to play an open-world superhero game if I could find one (or at least find a copy of the Spider-man 2 Xbox game). I remembered seeing this superhero-looking game on the same rack as the Star Wars Galaxies game boxes (what I was playing at the time), and that turned out to be City of Heroes. Ran up to Gamestop, picked up a copy of Good vs. Evil Edition, and the rest is history.

I started playing in August 2008, having found a copy of Good vs. Evil on the cheap at a local Big Lots (think warehouse style discount retailer).  I played the game 'til it closed at 3 a.m. Eastern on December 1, 2012.

So age when I started?  29.

I'm 30 now. I started playing CoH in the summer of 2008, and I was about 24 then.

I guess as far as which gaming generation I most identify with, it'd be the NES/SNES era. Though my family did own a Commodore 64 for a shor time, and so I have fond childhood memories of a number of games from that side of things.

a memory of playing with an Aussie who was older than I was, his global was @Blue <insert name> and he wasn't kidding, his conversation was incomprehensible with the profanity filter on.

My son introduced me to a superhero game called City of Heroes back in 2004 (hope my date is correct, I seem to be having a brain cramp).  Anyways, I started my sub just before I2 went live and never looked back.  I'm 66 now so I'll let you good folks do the math (dang, can't find my calculator).  Great community this is! :D

Huge nod & thumbs up to Ironwolf for trying to get our game back. ;)  Man if I lived in your area I'd be helping you put them barn doors up.

I was 14, the game was in Beta when I was over at a friends house playing games.
His dad had gotten into the beta for this MMO called 'City of Heroes'. He played for a little bit, and then turned it over to us.
Been playing from then until the doors shut in my face...Un-told amounts of dollars later...

I grew up in Paragon City, and while I'll save the sob stories for now, CoH and the community pretty much raised me when my parents wouldn't. I can surely say that I wouldn't be who I am today without the community.

So when the doors shut, after a few hours of crying I said f*ck that, f*ck NCSoft, and started learning how to re-make the game in a new engine...

Still a die-hard CoHer to the core.

I was 25. I read one of those Top 10 lists at Game FAQs, and it included a description of COH that intrigued me, so I couldn't resist getting a trial account. Issue 8 was the latest one at that time, I remember how Wentworth's irritated me (it was already on the map, but closed). And I'm not sure how I could live with that messy contact list for over a year. %-)

I was 44 at the start of City of Heroes.

I had been watching the game grow through Beta and since I have always been a comic book fan - I decided on the day it started to buy the game. I had never been interested in an MMO, but a Super Hero MMO sounded fun.

I then made my first character a Fire/Fire blaster and he was the first Fire/Fire to 40 on the Champion server. So much fun and so many days of doing whatever I wanted that day. Mindlessly reduce stress by melting Nazi's - done! Team up and in the pre-Purple Patch days have our entire SG go to Founder's Falls and have 40 level 5-25 characters fight a single 3 villian group for crazy XP - done! So many things to do and all done when YOU wanted to do them.

I'm currently thirty-twelve.  I started playing around August 2004.  I remember that Issue 2 was released like a week or two after I started playing.  I head about the game around release, but to be honest, I didn't really consider playing it until I found out that a friend of mine who also worked night shift played it.  I picked it up, tried it out, and for around six months, played it non-stop.  I took around a three-month break in 2005, but never canceled my subscription.  When I came back, I liked the game more than ever and never really stopped playing after that until December 1, 2012.

I was about 35 the first time I played.

I'd seen CoH a couple years earlier, and was rooting for it.

But I was doing ridiculous amounts of work and my main machine at the time was a heavily coddled P3 800 with 4GB of RAM.  So I'd missed out on the early years of the game.

So, Hyperstrike was born July 4th, 2008.

Ha, got you all beat (is this a good thing?)!!

Yes, yes it is!  Remember: Old is good!  ;-)  It also often beats the alternative...

I was born in the merry old year of 1960 so I am 53  (cries silently about the number, not the wisdom that comes with it).

I was also born in 1960 and started playing under Issue 14 in  April or May of 2009.  (I've erroneously stated i15 in the past but looking at the wiki dates and that AE had always existed when I started means i14 and I'd been playing only a few months when Issue 15 "Anniversary" was released.)  City of Heroes wasn't the first MMORPG I'd played but it was the first one I played for more than a few hours, and the first (and so far only) MMO to strongly appeal (tho I expect City of Titans and Hereos & Villains will likely change that.)

If memory serves, there was an age survey thread done months ago that resulted in an age demographic of Titan Network CoH fans.

I was 54 when CoH started, pre-purchasing the game, and was invited to one of the last Betas about a week prior to opening day.  I was 62 when I was booted out of my home away from home for the last time.

It was the first, (but not the last) MMO I'd tried, due to the subject matter involved.  I was raised on SF stories and comics, so when I heard that CoH was finally coming out after years of pre-development work, I had to give it a try.  Even though I've tried dozens of other MMOs during its existence and afterwards, it remains my favorite MMO experience of all.

I started playing with Issue 3 in 2005, at age 37.
My best friend had been trying to sell me on making the leap from pen and paper RPGs to CoH. The fifteen bucks a month (at the time) was a real strech considering I had three kids already. But I finally relented and ended up playing alongside my wife for many, many, many hours. My first CoH memory is camping our for the very first Winter Lord event and partaking in the silly XP frenzy.

Call me crazy, but my favorite part of the game was playing the pre-travel-power levels and finding PUGs in the original Hollows; making the crazy dangerous journey on foot across Troll and CoT infested territory. Actually misjudged a jump once and fell into Grendel's Gulch, and managed to still survive and make it out alive. I ran Frostfire more times than I can count (before Ouroboros).

I took a break right around the time CO launched but it just couldn't compete. I resubbed after about a year and stayed active until the end.

And now ...sad blapper :(

I started playing Dec 5, 2004, two days before my my 37th birthday. I'd heard about the game while it was still in beta and a number of people I knew online from my Play by EMail rpg group played it when it first launched in April.

They praised it so much I told my husband I wouldn't mind trying it out even though I'd never had any interest in playing MMOs in the past. Him and our son bought it for me for my birthday and I fell in love with it, playing it until the very moment it shut down.

I was so terrible at the game when I first started playing I couldn't figure out how to go up or down while hovering and spent level 5-14 trying to figure it out. It was when she got flying I finally figured it out. That was also the character who hit level 50 laying face down on the ground waiting to be revived by her teammates. I was lucky the people I regularly teamed with were patient and put up with my lack of game skills.

45 years old here, and seriously missing the City.  To fly it's skies and chat away with old friends from Virtue and Champion would be a definite upturn for my year.  Lifelong believer in the heroic ideal (Bullfinch's Mythology was one of the books I started out with back in the pre-PC age, around kindergarter/first grade), and comic reader and collector almost as long - CoH was the first (so far only) game I've found where it just felt like everything was right...

I was 35 when I started playing, had looked at the game and almost bought it a few months before but my stance at the time was "I'm not paying a @#$% subscription after buying the game" When I did buy it it cost me $20 and I figured it had a month free so if i didn't like it i was out 20 bucks. Creating my first toon took me about a half hour but settled on a ice tank and when i zoned in to "Outbreak" my jaw dropped and I was instantly hooked.

and became a huge Kirby fan by 1968.

he is of course talking about the vaccuum cleaner not the pink ball-like nintendo character with similar operational features. speaking of which when I was little we went to the lilac festival one year and nintendo had a booth, Shigeru Miyamoto was there, my brother had at the time drawn a crude picture of a face with arms and legs (very short), I seem to remember he showed it to miyamoto, and then; kirby. that year I met Kelsy Grammer at the time famous for cheers and frasier.

at least, thats what I believe was my childhood, I'm still not sure, I have memories from the 1920's that don't match up at all and theres a guy with the same exact name as me who died in the 1920's, the FBI has been trying to contact me about it since I was a child (my "parents" only told me about it recently when I found out for myself due to a yahoo article talking about people's lost money and a link to help those people find it), apparently he had a life insurance account and no family to claim it when he "went missing and was presumed dead", why contact me? same name and I lived in the same city as he did; good old Rochester NY for you.

so, current time-line memories being correct I'm 28 years old born in 1985 december played CoH when I was 23, previous ones also being correct by some strange anomaly; I'd have been born in the 1870's -1880's making me around 139 years old to my best knowledge. The thought always comes what if I'm even older and just too senile to remember?- joke but at the same time part of me worries about what if it's true, maybe I should phone the FBI and see what they know see if it rings any bells.

I am 31 years young. I remember seeing advertisements for COH before it came out but my computer back then had issues running Space Quest 6 nevermind a MMO. as time kept going I got newer computers, got sucked into playing WoW for a while, then in 2007-8 (can't remember which) I was looking for an MMO besides WoW I could play on my Mac and I saw COH again, and it became my home on and off until it closed.

I was 24 I think when Beta testing started. I saw rumbling of the City of Heroes being made in magazines for a couple years before then. So when I saw they was chance get into the beta testing, I jumped on it. I was playing the MMO prior to that Dark Age of Camelot. (a game that all died a few years ago.) I was burnt out from a couple years of playing and being a guild leader, and was needing something else. I was done with wizards, dragons and elves oh my. I started playing City of Heroes, and everyone was so much faster, more interesting and user friendly for most part. In Dark Age, you need ride a horse for like 30 mins to get to areas. (I tried go back after the Atlantis expansion came out, but the extreme slowish was such a turn off. Your characters jump like they have cement blocks on their feet and run much slower than a lvl 1 character in CoH..the travel powers just make getting places so much faster.) Then groups would break up by time you got there....like was such a brutal time sink.

I founded Eternal Vigilance again on Justice. I had a good following for a bit since I recruited quite a few bodies from Beta. (I wish more of my former guild had come with me.) When Wow hit, a lot of people jumped ship. The game was still rough around the edges, and I can understand why people didn't stick around. End game was lacking, and there was little do with your mountains of influence. The game rapidly improved, but the game never seemed to get the following it deserved. It chugged on steadily though, continually improving. I wish I could send the final version of the game back to cryptic, and had that been the launched version. I think it would blown away so many people, and it would gotten a massive following.

I played majority of the time since Beta. I took breaks here and there. I made a ton of characters (I wish they'd made more server slots earlier. I'd never needed make villains on a different server.) I was on a break when the end came, which my only real regret , as I couldn't post on the forums at all then. I just had sit back and watch it come silently. A friend of mine that I gamed with wasn't talking to me, but we both put our differences aside to play City Of Heroes till last day we could together. It was like having someone we both knew on their deathbed.

I've mostly had my fill of MMOs these days. I generally have too much going on to really dive into them the way I used to. (I'd play games like a second job.) Especially after the CoX went down, I stopped caring if I cut corners in games, or do everything, since it can all be so fleeting. When City Of titans gets going, I might give it a whirl, but I'm in no hurry put my cape back on. I had a good run and I am at peace with it as I sit here at age 34. (Almost 35.)

I am 53 years young  8)

Was given the game as a Christmas Gift Dec 25 2005 from my kids

Have always been a comic fan and collector

Started playing computer games on an 8086 computer with only floppy drive no hard drive

Played Turbografx because NEC technology was better than Nintendo at the time

Played too many games to list and have collected almost every game console ever made

But none come even close the the way City of Heroes made me feel

Nothing even comes close to what it is like to be a Tank and Hold the fate of a whole group in your hands.

Or as an emp defender and to have the power over life itself

My fist computer was a Texas Instruments TI99/4A. It didn't even come with a floppy drive. Had to use cassette tapes.

Then we graduated to the 8086 computer with a 20 meg hard drive. That was a LOT of space...back then.

Now days, if windows sneezes, that 20 meg would be over flowing.

When City Of titans gets going, I might give it a whirl, but I'm in no hurry put my cape back on. I had a good run and I am at peace with it as I sit here at age 34. (Almost 35.)

Dark Age was such a good game! You should  Check out uthgard when its back up and running. Seems to be where most people play daoc nowadays :D

also i was around 8 when i started back in 2005 I cant remember exactly but my first event was the Christmas one with the giant snowman!

Was 28 at the time . My friend had the beta and I watched him play it at first. When he brought the real game, I was addicted to it. I never understood why Everquest was called Evercrack until I played City of Heroes. I think for the first three years , I played it on my friends computer till I got my own. Then I ran COH on mines :). Too many fun days.

But to answer the question, I'm 38.

If I remember correctly, I started playing in March of 2007, so I was 32 at the time. And now I'm 40.

I am 45 at the moment, and started just after Issue 8 was launched, which would mean I was 37 at the time.  Boy, does time fly by.

I owned a TRS-80 when they were being sold in Radio Shack. Then a Commodore 64. Getting a tape drive was a HUGE upgrade. Before then, I would spend an hour typing in the basic code for a game just to play for twenty minutes.  :P

My dad bought City of Heroes in November 2006. I was 10 years old when I started playing the game. I was 16 when the game shut down. And now I just turn 18 last month.

OK, OK,  I was x when I started playing.
Now, I'm y + x.

Started just after the breakthrough issue.
Solve for y.

Man I alway thought I was the old one playing games.. No wonder the community is so mature, because we'll, we're all mature (age wise).

I was 23 when I started playing, so I'm 31 now. I found the game looking for my first MMo to play. Turns out I picked the wrong one (the right one really), I've never been able to play another MMO. Thanks CoH for ruining/spoiling me.

I was 20 when I started, back in April 2010. I remember because it was issue 17. I'm 24 now.

I fell in love with CoH immediately. My time with it was short, but I still miss it terribly and would give anything to play again.

I wish I had discovered it years earlier  :gonk:

Currently 42 years old.  Started in 2004 so I was 32 years old.  Started playing alongside my wife who was 29 years old at the time.

...she's still 29 years old.  You'll just have to trust me on that.

45 now and 35 when I started playing (I3... The hollows and khleds were new).  Had to make a second account for my daughter who loved all the dark powers and warshades.  We would sometimes team and play our own sound track of Joy Division, Peter Murphy, Siouxsie Sioux, etc.  Hopefully the game comes back and I can introduce my new grandson to it (and hopefully he won't be so dark)!

Are you guys all old hippies?

I'm older - but not yet old. I'm 47, but I'm going on 20. Honest, I ...suffer? from what you might call an arrested development. I got divorced at 27, so my therapist tells me that's why I like girls who are 20-30. I always thought it was because they were pretty.

Seriously, I'm no hippy. I'm ...probably considered by my friends to be so conservative, I'm uptight. I have had the same flattop haircut (Think Howie Long's haircut) since 1987. I shave every day. I would make my bed, but I use it every night, so despite my years in the military, I never picked up that habit.
I'm also one of the very few people I know that thought (and still thinks so) that Star Wars was one of the worst movies ever made, made even worse because so many people liked it - which made me wonder what was wrong with me that I disliked it so bad, I walked out in the middle. Yeah, talking about the one that came out in...1977, I think.

I am what some might generously call a passionate player. I played the market with great success. Ended up with over 100 billion inf. Would have had more, but I spent a lot of it building ridiculous second builds and donating to costume contests. I also yelled at people for messing up in my badge iTrials. But only because they were illiterate! I knew they couldn't read what I was saying, because if they could have, why did they run past me and blow up that bomb in the UGT? That's my story and I'm sticking to it....

However, now that the game is gone and I don't have anyone to yell at anymore...I kind of miss it, and regret some of my temper tantrums. Only some of them, though.

Most immature 47 year old ever, I'm sure! :gonk:

I'm more on the old hippie-chick end of things.  ;D

I'm 42, about as socially/politically liberal as the come, and sort-of one of those "earth mother" types. In a geekish, slightly neat-freak kind of way.

I was more of a concept player than a power-gamer, and frankly... I was never all that good at the game. I was as much of a klutz in digital form as I am off-line. But I tried the best I could, and that was usually good enough. The City community was more forgiving of questionable players than most, and I do miss that.

<Not an old hippy... but here because of one>

I grew up with this game. I'm not kidding, this was the first (of too many) games I ever remember playing. My dad played once in a while, and one day I asked if I could try it. He went and found some white baddies, and told me which numbers to hit as I sat in his lap (I was about 3 years old). I died. Still, it's one of my most powerful memories to date.

I kept bugging him, and when I was 6, I had a little computer in my mom and dad's office (they worked at home) to play with. My dad allowed me to use my mother's account (she wasn't terrifically fond of the game, but enjoyed playing Defender a lot) if I asked. It wasn't until I was eight until I could play at my own free will.

Side note: I was level 12, and over 2 levels in debt. I was not very smart ingame, and once or twice I actually told some people that I was 8 years old. (I've learned my lesson since, but people were surprisingly nice about it).

By the time I was 10, I was obsessed. I constantly annoyed my dad about the game until he got me to shut up for a short while by giving me Half-Life and his steam account.

Another mistake on his part. Not only did I grow just as obsessed with that franchise, I lost interest in CoH. It wasn't until I heard it was going to be shut down that I started playing again, and I actually got my character from 24 to 38 (one of my regrets is never getting to 50).

I'm not able to, but my dad has been in the game since the beta (he actually has Prima's guide, holding it right now), and has thrown money at Missing Worlds, and does everything I wish I could do to help the game come back. He may not know it, but he's the reason I'm such a nerd.

(My dad's cooler than yours.)

I recently celebrated 55!  So I am now letting it be known that I regard myself now as being officially middle-aged, in that while if I have to live beyond 110, okay, but Quality over Quantity, baby!

PS. I am not quite old enough to be a hippie but am friends with many; they were the (much) cooler (think: kewler) older brothers and sisters of my childhood peers.   I still think it's groovy!  Peace.   :)

The Nightmare is in the very virile age of his 20s with many years of evil ahead of me! Don't be disheartened though, I shall pity you and not perform acts of darkness after 6pm. Seniors require their rest after all, MWAHAHAHAHAHA!

I started playing in 2005 at the age of 52.  One of my sons got the game for Christmas...a gift from his brother.  I had never played an MMO, being largely uninterested in the types of games they usually played....but I was intrigued by CoH because I'm a comic book geek from my earliest days.  Now....I'm 62 yairs of age, and pining for the only MMO I ever really got hooked on.  <sigh>

42 going on dead.
Old enough I don't call my knees the left and right anymore, they're called the good knee and the bum knee.
So old that when I cough, I throw out my back and then my hip and shoulder follow simultaneously.
Getting close to the age where the cost of the birthday candles is more than the cake.
Old enough that the photos my dad does not recall posing for are actually pictures of me.
I'm so old that I remember watching the Simpsons... When it was on The Tracy Ullman Show.
Finger cramps up when scrolling for my birth year on a website that requires an age verification check.
So old that I think Gears of War is a rip off of Contra (Up, up, down, down, left, right, left right, B, A!)
I'm so old that some of my favorite songs are played in elevators.
So old that I'm not at loud parties, I'm the grumpy neighbor calling the police.
My definition of happy hour is a one hour nap.
Your secrets are safe with me because I won't remember them.
My joints are more accurate than meteorologists.

I'm so old, that back in my day, the only video game we had was the vertical control.

I'm so old.

I'm so old that I remember Johnny Carson doing jokes like these on the Tonight Show.

Doc, play "Tea For Two".  (starts tap dancing)
