Personally I don't think it is a good move.

They getting in on the super hero cash cow while they can before it runs dry. I don't blame them.

pretty much. the superhero fad may already have peaked given how Man of Steel and Dark Knight Rises was not Universally Praised and Ironman 3, while it did well, did not do as well as Marvel expected.

Maybe they're planning to debut him in Avengers 2, and use that to get people interested in seeing him again shortly afterwards in his own movie?

I wouldn't be surprised. Or in that Superman/Batman movie that is rumored to be on it's way to being made. Wait, Ant is Marvel right? Yeah the Avenger 2 debut is probably more likely.

Personally for me, I'm hoping they go with the O'Grady Ant-man instead of Pym for his movie.  Establish Pym in the Avengers movie and the concept of the Ant-man suit.  But then have the Ant-man movie about the guy that takes the suit and makes the journey from selfish petty thief to super hero.

I think he has much better story potential than Hank Pym.

Considering Marvel has a plan to release movies through 2020 I don't that is the issue.  Pretty much I think they are expecting that Ant-man is only going to do so-so, which is why they are moving it away from James Bond release.  However by moving it to the end of a blockbuster summer I think they are going to have the same problem with burnout that The Wolverine faced this summer and Ant-man doesn't have Hugh Jackman playing a very popular superhero that he epitomizes as the live action version.

I think they would have been better off putting it out in Jan/Feb 2016 but that probably throws off their phase 3 timetable.

That seems the most likely path. though they also seem to be doing the same with Miss Marvel potentially (talking to people like Emily Blount, Katie Sackhoff, and Olivia Wilde apparently) so I hope that they don't end up overloading A2 with so many characters that you can't keep up. That was a major flaw of Ironman 2 between black widow, nick fury, whiplash, Hammer, senator Stern, more pepper, more tony, more coulson, introducing warmachine, none of the characters ended up getting the devoted screen time they really needed to make us care about them...

yeah and there have been movies that have been planed to be trilogy but got panned and thus scrapped.

It's a cycle though, it may last to 2020 or it may last to 2015 but everything dims for a bit before making a resurgence. At one point in time, no one could imagine Westerns not being very popular and a time where very few are made. We are in that time period. Eventually it will come back.

And yeah Hugh Jackman murdered (a good thing) the Wolverine role. Although I remember there was a lot of doubt, skeptics, and some saying it's plain wrong and wont work with the casting of Jackman as Wolverine. They were wrong. I remember people saying Batman days were over when Nolan Ryan version was on the horizon especially with Christian Bale as Batman, many didn't see it. I remember the laughs and WTF and people thought they was off their rocker when Heath Ledger was cast to play the Joker and the Broke Back Mountain jokes. They were wrong again and he also killed the role and seemingly himself too. Maybe this guy will own The Ant role, although it will be tougher because not many people remember The Ant. We'll soon know and maybe The Ant may be the next big thing. Maybe people are tired of Wolverine movies as good as Jackman is in the role and the likes.

But there is also a good chance they make it to 2020 without burn out. One thing in their favor is they have decades and decades worth of lore. They just have to use it. Wolverine isn't the only interesting X-Men character.  I don't know how true this is, but rumor is that they originally had no plans on making Wolverine the center. They were planning on doing a few Storm with Halle Berry, Professor X, and Magneto movies of course with Wolverine as a bit player here and there. The other part of the rumor is that originally Wolverine origins was supposed be blended with Professor X origin story and how he came across Wolverine and helping him remember with a storyline within storyline of him going back to the place he was created. But he became such a big star that the rest of the origin stories were all scrapped and Magneto kind of sorta got an origin story blended with Prof. X story in first class.

I do not understand the Marvel Movie plan for Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy.

As a long time comic lover, I have no interest in either of them and if I'm not the target market, who is?  Perhaps I'm an anomaly, but some guy who talks to bugs isn't all that interesting to me.  Close ups of realistic ants on the big screen aren't, either.

As for the GoG, I don't know how the characters will be taken by the general viewing public other than to expect a comedy.  A Racoon with heavy weapons?  A talking tree as a super-hero?

They had better have a heck of a marketing plan for both GoG and Ant-man...

I blame the fact that many of their A-list properties were previously licensed to other studios (X-Men, Spider-man) and they don't really have a lot left.

Perhaps I'll be proven wrong, but I think they'll take a bath on both of these.

I think as long as they don't try to aim them at the may-august movie crowds, these movies, backed by the cache of "Marvel's Avengers" universe, will do fairly well.

that assumes that the house of mouse learned from the feedback on Iornman3 and backed off of its meddling trying to hit the PG mark. if not... then it's a much riskier gamble

Well I think that 1) they have a super tanker full of cash so they can try these more off beat titles and see if any will fly 2) think about the time they can't afford RDJ anymore or get the any of the "Avengers" back together beyond Avengers 2 so we need to establish other heroes to rotate in since our other big names are trapped at other studios, we have to look toward what's left and who was historically an Avenger.

So after Ultron in A2 we get Vision and possibly Wonder Man.  Ant-Man can lead to the Wasp.  Capt America 2 is introducing the Falcon.  They are looking to cover their bases.

Well Ant-man is a lot more than a guy that talks to bugs. I'll suggest you take a look at his Wikipedia page, maybe you'll begin to get it.  It does surprise me the amount of support he (specifically Hank Pym) has around the Internet in comic geek circles.

I admit Guardians of the Galaxy is a left field move to me.  My guess it is because they want to delve deeper into the cosmic aspect of the Marvel Universe and to help set up Thanos for his eventual Avengers confrontation.  I love the comic though - so I'm going to be happy to see it.

Finally Marvel has plenty of characters to draw upon big and small, no reason why they shouldn't all eventually have a shot.

No need to be condescending; I know who Hank Pym.  However, I don't think a movie about a guy who controls ants will be a big hit with the general public other than maybe as a comedy.

The reason why not every character should get a shot at the big screen is that it costs a lot of money and characters without general appeal won't recover costs at the box office.  There's a reason that Ant-man wasn't already optioned when Spider-man, X-men and FF were; nobody thinks he will sell.  He's even more obscure than Iron Man (before RDJ made him a household name).

Maybe Marvel will pull it off but at this point, as a comic-buyer who knows about Ant-man and Pym, I will be waiting for it on Netflix.  We'll see if they can change my mind between now and then.
