Title: www.cityofheroes.ca
Post by: CraZboy on April 01, 2013, 01:31:55 PM
I know its April 1st, but, I assure all of you that this is not a joke!  The City of Heroes site is back online!!

As I did for Earth and Beyond, I have started to recreate the last known release of the City of Heroes web site. The site is far from finished, but, once the recreation is complete, I would like to add other pages that would bring together the other materials created by the community, so that its never lost.

I am far from finished. A site this size is never finished. However, I did manage to salvage ALL the videos, and ALL the screenshots from the City of Heroes web site. What you are seeing is each page recreated one by one. Yes, I loved this game, I pray that it will return to us very soon.

The one thing that really amazed me, is that, during the recreation of this site, I was able to read and view all the updates available in City of Heroes, and even after 8 years, I still haven't had the time to do it all. I teared up watching all the videos, and looking at the screenshots.

Also, I was able to recreate the Going Rogue web site. Its combines with this one, but I am missing ALL the screen shots, so if anyone has a copy of them, please let me know at crazboy@cityofheroes.ca. Just a reminder, this is a fan site. Its privately funded, and is not used for monatary gains. I do not accept donations .. well, I do, in the form of materials that I can use to improve the content of this site if you get my meaning. So, enjoy, be patient for the missing items and pages, it will be done when I can.

I remember spending hours on your Earth and Beyond website! I don't know if you remember but when your forums were up I used to post there too (Proteus). I'd post updates about how the emulator was progressing. I was also Proteus on Galileo. At one point early in the EnB emu's history, Ayusaki (remember him?) was getting irritated about all the casual people getting nosey about the project. Several of the devs were too. Because up to that point, it was mostly just the devs and a few of us crazies who ran our local servers and sent in bug reports. So I remember Ayusaki was thinking about making the forums non-public. He never did that, but I was trying to talk him into directing all the casual fan chatter to your site, because it felt so much like our old home, and your forums looked just like the old forums. Seemed like a great idea! I remember looking for you but you were taking a break at that time. And then your forums got glitched. :'(

Long story short I thought you were the bee's knees like eight(?) years ago. You were always helpful. Now here you are, helping in some way to keep my second lost home alive too!  :D

Thank you so much for doing this!

Ended up clicking on the CoH: Freedom signup page and the first thing at the top of the page was this quote by PC Gamer magazine: "City of Heroes remains by far the best superhero MMO in
terms of content, systems and community.
" A glowing compliment by one of the world's most popular computer gaming publications.

I abhor pitchforks and torches and the mob. But this is why even I am moved to very choice words over NCSoft. This publisher might have some very smart people working in it, in fact I'm certain it does; but as a whole organization, as a business entity, NCSoft is just plain dumb and behaves erratically in spite of what are likely its best interests.

No joke dude, I teared up. I had to stop myself from clicking the play for free--because I know where that will end. But... it's beautiful. And wonderful. And if it disappears tomorrow I /will/ cry. But this is really wonderful. Navigating the site and not looking at that hateful announcement telling us to "fly free" stuff with the picture of States... Thank you. I sincerely mean that.

(I rather hate April Fools and mistrust everything on that day, but even if I can only get this for 24 hours, you've totally made my day. I really feel that it makes the game seem so much closer.)

I remember everything very well.  The Ayusaki era was somewhat stressful.  Lots of us took breaks at that time .. LOL
I'm not good at coding and stuff like that, but I know how to keep things together in a way that they never get lost.
I'm happy that everyone likes the "Ultimate City of Heroes Fan Site".
This took me a long time to get it where it is today.  I had many issues, the screenshot pop-ups wern't working, the videos wern't loading in the page, the left page navigator wasn't opening properly.  Takes lots of patience and determination to figure out someone elses work.

But this work is to memorial and beautiful to let it go to waste.  But, its not finished.  I want to get some sort of forums going, I would like to finish the pages.  I don't know if I'm going to recreate all the "news" pages, there are hundreds of them.  But, I will make this as complete as I can.

Enjoy everyone.  I am happy you all enjoy it.

Yes, all the comic books are there, the screenshots, the videos.

In time, once I have finished the site, I will reach out to the community, and perhaps I'll host your own videos and screenshots, stories and more.
I really want to preserve as much of City of Heroes as possible.

Well thank you dude .. yeah, I do my best to recreate as close as possible .. and I am working on getting the look of the original forums for Coh up as close as possible as well, problem is that the original forums were done under vBulletin v3.x .. and I have lost my customer number .. waiting on vBulletin to respond to my e-mail to recover it .. and I will say this, once I get it, both the City of Heroes forums and Earth and Beyond forums will be back to their normal glory so we can spend hours watching Satanic Hamster post all of his pony pictures again and again and again and again ...

Damn .. I sure could use a Nemesis powerleveling mission in Grandville right about now .. Perhaps give Lord Recluse a slap in the face .. I sooo miss my Mini CrabSpider

That is so AWESOME!!!

Oh and by the way heroes, Earth and Beyond is still an awesome game--even moreso than before because the emulator devs have added 3 new classes (which had been slated for Live before the game closed), plus new areas to explore, and out-of-game web-based tools that were never seen or heard of back in Live. As of late 2012 it is officially out of Beta and is "Now Live" (as opposed to Old Live--such terminology is useful during balance discussions). Your characters will never be wiped.

Account sign-up/management: http://www.net-7.org/
Community: http://forum.enb-emulator.com/

Even if you don't want to play, go check out the News and Announcement forum (regular patch notes there and in the community-built launcher), the Roleplaying forum, Technical Support, Game Master Public Support and so on. Check out the codes of conduct for players, GMs and devs, and the Player Advocate program which all provide checks and balances against exploits at the bottom and abuses of power at the top.

Done? Now for you doubters, every time you doubt what this community could do to create and maintain a community server and player support, I want you to remember that the Earth and Beyond team did it and does it with a fraction of the people and resources this community has.  :)

And one more thing.

If you need anything, I also have a record of the CoH website.  As soon as the shutdown was announced, I spent about 2 days ripping (nearly) everything off of it, including all the videos, screenshots, podcasts, comics, extras, etc.  I didn't manage to archive the full news archive, however, as I ran out of time that I needed to spend playing and recording about 2TB worth of storylines, mishes, TFs and Trials using BandiCam for 3 months.

My e-mail is janessavr@yahoo.com.

Let me know if you need anything.

Imagine you're stumbling on to this site from some other source. Imagine that you haven't been told "It's a fan site!" prior to landing here. Or worse, imagine some confused friend told you that the game was back and pointed you here.

http://www.cityofheroes.ca/
"Nature Affinity - Get it now on the Paragon Market!"
"Play Free Now!"
"Refer a Friend - Receive Free Game Time"
Yes, there is stuff on the page that says it's a fan site. But it looks very much like the live site and it has a LOT of language that makes it appear it's linked to a working game.

Clicking "Play For Free" takes you to...
http://www.cityofheroes.ca/freedom/signup.html
"Create a City of Heroes Game Account"
"Sign up to receive the NCsoft newsletter, beta announcements, and other exclusive offers."
"Sign up with your current NCsoft Master Account"
I have no idea what happens when you submit that form, but everything else about the page makes it appear like this is an official NCsoft sign up page.

This looks like a clever scam. I can trust that it's not, but even still, it's potentially very confusing and misleading to anyone who might stumble onto it.

There are tons of working links that tie into NCsoft's actual sites (such as "Account Management"). That's something scammers do all the time for a reason: it helps confuse people into thinking that your site is part of the legitimate company's family of websites.

The fact that you're mixing posting new updates in the news feed confuses it even further, because it makes it seem like a live, current site. Once you have enough news updates to push "This is a fan site" stuff off the front page, it'll be even worse.

As it stands, it's very likely people are going to stumble onto this randomly eventually and think the game is back and have a moment of soaring hope... and then have that come crashing down when they finally figure out that's not true. :P

It's also likely some people are going to think it's a scam and avoid it. If I had encountered it without the context given here, I would've been convinced it was a scam. I might have even reported it to NCsoft or to its web hosting company.

I recommend you do one of two things:

If you're looking to archive the site as it was at closure, then put a banner across the top of every page that says very clearly that this is an archive. Then get rid of your updates, because they don't belong. The news that was on the site at closure is what should be there instead.

If you're looking to preserve the look and feel of the site as a portal to a fan site, then nuke all the stuff that makes it appear to be linked to a working game or to NCsoft.

Making it both a portal to a fan site and an archive is confusing; they're purposes at odds with one another. If you insist on keeping it that way though, then at the very least put the banner across the top.

The "Create Account" button on his site doesn't work when the form is filled out.

As in, it sends you no where, and in the site code, it says "unclickable" or some such.

The "Game Downloads" button simply sends you to a "Not Found" page.

I do agree, though. About the links everywhere.

It should simply be a "frozen in time" archive/snapshot of the website before it went down, IMO.

With as you said, a banner/words stating it is a fansite/not official on every page.
