Would this not work for a great 6th month story!!
It would be a positive coh community story as well on how well we all worked together to fund, build and execute the feat.

Well, I don't see how it would be negative publicity in any way. Pretty harmless and might get us a media story somewhere - hook up a reporter with VV and TonyV and let them tell our story.

I say, send the entire Phalanx up. Go BIG or go home. :)
Ooh, wait... do one as the Phalanx, and another as Recluse and Arachnos. Race them in these ways:
1) Time to final altitude
2) Round Trip time (launch to landing)
3) landing area distance from launch.. nearest wins
Post results, garner brownie points for doing it. :)

The CoH community the first to send a Jello fruit mold up in to space. lol
But no the big or go home sounds perfect. The CoH Heroclik set sounds great!

Now I'm thinking of those little spongy dinosaurs that expand when you put them in water.

so how does this edge of space program work? You just hand them $300 and they send the chosen symbol to the edge of space wit ha camera?

The only problem I would have with the suggestions, here, is using actual Heroclix figures. There are only a finite number of those, and I would hate to see someone lose such a prized possession.

Seems to me that, with a modicum of artistic talent, Thinkgeek's Make Your Own Superhero Kit (http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/f09a/) would be better for that, judging from the product photo on the page.

I don't mind, mine are still brand new in their original packaging with CoV:CE. I'll check my box to see which ones I have when I get home tonight, since I got doubles of one of them...

Keep in mind that these little projects are usually unsuccessful. The ones that make it get a lot of attention, but you don't hear so much about the ones who try and the stuff they sent up into space ends up getting lost. The last one of these things I saw took three tries, if I recall correctly, before they had one come down where they could track and retrieve it. I'm not saying it's not worth talking about, just that it would likely cost more than we're thinking.

The success rate is one reason why I would caution against using something irreplaceable. The paint-your-own hero figure would be a better option, due to repeatability.
To JagX, the cost is for the weather balloon and camera. If we could get someone to take a Heroclix figure to the International Space Station, that would be a coup, as well, but, unless someone knows a mission specialist in rotation...

I was very seriously considering this. I originally wanted it done really close to the shutdown, but after some research that proved improbable at best.
First, winter is the worst time to do this because the upper level winds are insane, meaning you could end up with a 500 mile trip to retrieve the vehicle after it comes back down.
Second, I'm uncomfortably close to the east coast of the U.S., and the risk of an ocean landing is too great.

Well winter is ending and I live on a island my self but there is many here I'm sure we can find others with better launch locations.
We need to choose a pilot and I'm starting to agree the CoH Heroclix is not the best. We should send a kit mod of Captian America/Statesman.
lol Maybe we should add a rocket to the balloon so when at the peek of height. It fires and sends Captian NCsoft the mmo killer out to outerspace.
Well TonyV would it not be cheaper as this is not a first time. And we basicly have North America to find a place to launch from. It's People in central US or like Alberta, Canada with flat open spaces that would make great members to be launchers yes?

I like the make your own hero idea as well, in case it doesn't work the first time as planned. Although it would be somewhat of a metaphor if all our heroes were lost in space.

Actually, I would be willing to donate my CoH heroclix to this project.
They're currently in a box of "stuff I don't want to throw away, but have no use for". If they were to be used for an endeavor like this, and maybe find a new, loving home afterward, great!
I would vote for the space race between heroes and villains.

Last thing we need to see after going through all this trouble for a space mission is to have recorded footage of a severed torso against the backdrop of Earth. I guess you could give him a transparent canopy of some kind (like those plastic bauble spheres for DIY Christmas ornaments) but that's just not as cool.
