So with the new way to use the character creator and everything Titan has given us to be able to use it again, lets see how creative we can be with all the new options. I started derailing that thread so I thought I would open a new one.

The Think Tank head option lets you have a headless character, or an empty tank/bubble helmet.

In developer mode, anyway.

I don't know if this was a preexisting aura or not (didn't have much time on the Beta server before I tried it) but the aura option for making a cloud of money spiral around a character is awesome.

as far as i know it's new with the butterfly aura and the microbial [and awesome] aura. the money goes great with the money bag backpack. XD makes me feel like a successful smalltime villain.

I think the money aura is actually from the money backpack. Bank robbing villains would wear that and trail money behind them as they ran around in the Safeguard missions, once they'd robbed the bank.

It's an aura I've long wished players could have, though.

The backpack and the aura are separate.

Both of them are brand new items (the backpack looks quite a bit nicer than the Safeguard mission one) that were slated for release at some point in the near future.

You don't need to be in NPC mode to select them.

The worst part is that I kind of think (going by hints dropped by Zwillinger and Hit Streak) that the money aura was going to be either a giveaway like the princess hat, or a free-for-VIP-exclusive aura.

LOL...I also have NO icons on my desktop. (They are all in the quickstart t/b.) A puter tech told me that it takes a bit of resources to keep the shortcuts generated on the d/t, and putting them in the t/b frees up some power for your puter. I have an old putersaurus, and found it to be true, for me. (Besides, it gives me a nice, unobstucted view of the pic I choose for my screen.) see?

Now Berg Katse is... an odd bird you might say. S/he is not what s/he appears to be. If your only exposure to the character was in the form of Zoltar from BOTP, get ready for a bit of jolt.

Katse is a hermaphrodite. S/he was formed by Sosai X (Luminous One) by fusing two fraternal twins (male and female) into one person. Katse changes gender and has some control over it. (Apparently in Katse's childhood years, the switch occured yearly without any control, thus requiring hir to move often). In adulthood s/he has more control over it. Using it to advantage by sometimes infiltrating someplace to spy in female form. And in fact is known as a Sub-Commander Mala in the Galactor organization (unknown even to almost all the Galactor agents!)

Anyway - all of the above is by way of explanation as to why I used the female frame in designing my homage to Katse, but with proportion slider tweaked as far towards gender neutral as I could get.

Finally got the beta client up and running and decided to mess around with it. There's some cool stuff in there that I wish we'd have been able to get- some of it future things, some of it just NPC stuff.

Firstly, a character I'd wanted to make for a long time: Arachnette. She'd have been one of the villain group counterparts to a teen hero group I played in with a bunch of friends called the Young Phalanx. They were mostly based off of the Freedom Phalanx, in the sort of way the Young Avengers or Teen Titans are spinoff groups of their universe's iconic hero groups. Arachnette would have, of course, been based on Lord Recluse.

And then there's a kind of alternate armor version of P-Tron, my primary Young Phalanx character. She does double duty as both a teen Mynx and a teen Positron, basically. In an ideal world, she'd have been rerolled as that new Striker AT so she could be a proper ranged/melee hybrid character. Here, she's salvaged some stuff from Praetorian bots and grafted it onto her existing armor because that's cool. I'm happy the NPC editor lets us actually use Mynx's cat ears- most people don't look close enough to notice, but they're actually unique looking, and not available to players.

I don't know what this guy is, but he's super awesome. Some sort of rularuu-posessed robot thing, energy fountaining out the top where a head would be. Being able to make headless characters is pretty awesome, actually. I'd totally play this guy. Probably another Striker, with Darkness powers or something? Not sure what he would be.

And then this is a slightly updated version of one of my existing characters(she's Water Blast but I like the trident so who cares). I noticed there's some interesting behavior in terms of arm replacement using short sleeved options with jackets. I'm guessing this is specifically built into some NPC parts and players never had access to them? But it lets you do some cool stuff with previously arm-covering chest texture options. Like I did here.

Even without the game itself, making characters and costumes is still pretty fun. Hopefully, if there's some sort of private server thing that goes up, they'll enable dev costume bits for all players to be able to use. (unless there's some crashes associated with that or something weird, but I'd imagine the chances of that are pretty slim)

Have I mentioned how much I loved the fact that since power customization, you could preview all your primary and secondary powers during character creation? Something that not even CO or DCUO do.

Here, I've played around some with the preview function in the "normal" version of the Beta Icon character creator for the Gatchaman characters created above. (You can't do this in the version that unlocks all the Dev/NPC character options. Pity.)

Ken using energy blades is actually canon in Gatchaman F (the 3rd series).

I once had an idea to do Gender-Flip Universe versions of Statesman and Lord Recluse with appropriately modified backstories (prompted by the fact that the female version of "Stephan" is "Stephanie" which is my name IRL. Stateslady was going to be "Marcia Cole").
I didn't have time to finish it, unfortunately, but I was working on Lady Arachne when NCsoft made their biggest mistake ever.

They're more like Mender "pieces".

They are in Chest Detail/Belt (not sure exactly where), labeled as "Ouroboros 1" "Ouroboros 2" etc.

Not sure what you mean by long strips... buttcapes? sash type things?

Some of the strips might be in shoulders, or capes/back area.

Oh, I copied one of the Menders, got her very close except for the Orob stuff (thus the squee above). Went on to icon...and realized I hadn't saved her costume. I have screenshots of her (and SOMEWHERE I have screenshots of her next to the prototype), but no body dimensions...probably was straight average, though. OTOH, DJ Thyme (my toon) would look just like the other if I created her.

I'm not sure if Leo has pimped his scripts here yet but I feel they need to be here :P He has made one that turns your costume file into a char file... meaning you can make these costumes, make a character from them, then stick said character into a demo and have video making fun!

This thread is epic! I've laughed, cried, nearly vomited and now have an exorcist on speed dial in case some of these escape my screen and get lose in the house. You guys are all sorts of awesome.

You need to make sure you are not running in full screen mode. Run the game in windowed mode. If you have your client set to full-screen mode, just "back up" to the original log-in screen and use the options settings available there to switch to Windowed mode. Then close that and use the icon program to run it again. It should come up in windowed format then. Alternatively, hit "Alt+Enter" and see if that performs the switch for you.

Full-screen mode was how I always liked to play the game. But in that mode it doesn't allow screenshots from the UI. In windowed mode you can use your regular "Print Screen" button and while it won't save a screenshot to the screenshot folder, it WILL save what you just snapshotted to the standard "clipboard". Just have a viewer program like IRFANView open and use the paste function to open it up. Then crop the picture to taste.

I do highly recommend IRFANView BTW - awesome little program.

Or instead of switching back and forth every time you take a screenshot, use a capture tool that saves the screens directly to your HDD. There are quite a few of those around, both free and commercial.
MWSnap ( http://www.mirekw.com/winfreeware/mwsnap.html )is guaranteed to work on Windows XP, not sure about newer versions.

I went through and I've been re-imagining some of the NPC groups we had for CoH. A fresh take on them, using the options we had at the end.

I added my Requiem to the 5th Column since the initial post above. Knew I'd missed one somewhere. Basically, I just wanted a dark, foreboding look for the 5th Column, something to really make them be taken a little more seriously. Not over the top with tons of skulls and all that. Just a sense of menace to them, with a uniform feel to the whole group.

Anyway, the Menders are still being worked on so here's another for now.

Lord Kazrak was my Mercs/Dark/Soul MM, a character I could never really get the look I wanted for, which affected the play time he got. Only made it to 38 with him. Always other ideas, better ideas aesthetically perhaps, to be played. The story is he's an otherdimensional tyrant who has been deposed from his throne, and is building a new army to retake his former empire. I think this look is pretty much what I'd been looking for.

If so, right click Icon.exe, create shortcut, right click the shortcut you made, select Properties.

Click the "Target" box there, and put this after the icon exe, as shown below.

Just having fun with some more re-imaginings in this post. My design aesthetic isn't necessarily what others would have gone for, but I looked at Mender Ramiel and then the rest of Ouroboros and how dated they looked in comparison. I took cues from Ramiel's look and extended that retroactively across all of the Menders, making up a bunch of yet-to-be-named Menders, in addition to remakes for most of the existing ones. I also tweaked the color palette a bit to be more neutral, not as high contrast for the most part. Still recognizable as Menders, just a slightly different take on them.

Mender Silos had the most extensive makeover, which I really felt was necessary to bring him to the fore as an important piece of the puzzle for both the past and the future. And that super-tall spiky hair just had to go. I chose to use the Elemental Order bits to give a hint of Nemesis in the look, as the jacket/robe especially reminds me of old-school military uniforms. I went with the Elemental Order backpack as though he actually had an Ouro crystal on his back, harnessing the power of the timestream to move forward and backward through time as needed. All that power is represented in part by the fact that he gets the glowie bits from different sets to set him apart slightly. Was just an idea, one that not everyone will agree with, I'm sure, but I liked it, so I went with it.

Silos actually was not the first one I did. I rolled through a series of generic, unnamed Menders first, to get a feel for the look I wanted. I had fun making them all, trying to keep a cohesive look that still had individuality for each.

So as to make sure there were some female Menders this time around as well (did we ever see more than just Tesseract?), I put together a few ideas here. Not sure about the last one, but the first few came together pretty well, I think.

After I had those ideas established, I went ahead and updated some of the contacts we dealt with in-game already. All should be recognizable, as I kept them mostly true to form, just with a few tweaks to bring them in line with everything else I'd played with.

I always thought "Arby Fab" was a tad.... odd.

It's more of an in-joke that everybody's in on. His Moderator # persona (I forget the exact number but I know it was definitely the one who was unmasked as Fab) seemed to have a thing for locking "necro" posts, even if the reply that triggered it was only a month later, completely on-topic, and the thread was still relevant.

It happened often enough for it to be noticed and become a running gag. :)

I never knew Fab was anyone. I just thought he was some guy that somehow got popular. I RP'd with him once when he first came around. I let him redesign the character I was playing. But honestly, he didn't do a good job. That's not an insult so much as just me being picky about how my own creations look.

Still working on more faction stuffs, but I'll keep bumping this (on topic, no less) with a few more oddities I played with when I first downloaded. Some of them have real potential as characters, probably, with backstories already being spun up in those cobwebs in the back of my mind.

Icon won't work for me. I saved it into my CoH folder and every time I click it the loading bars pops up and then blue screen of death so it's ugly face.

Are you talking about the standard well known Blue Screen of Death?

What Arachnion said but most importantly, what's the blue screen message ? (you know it's not there to be pretty, it tells things) (If it reboots too fast, you can fix that in the advanced properties of "my computer", by clicking on the parameters button of "start and recovery") (note: english words may be inexact as I don't have english version of windows XP installed)

Thanks! I gave him the initial name of "Doctor Darkmatter" as a placeholder, more or less. I figure he would be vying for power in Arachnos somewhere, probably trying to undermine Dr. Aeon.

as a tech-dense-dummy myself, i say "give demoediting a try!"

i learned in like, a few hours and i got to see my main floating around in atlas city hall and it made me hella happy. :)

my basics:

-make another shortcut and put -demoplay at the end
-go to http://demolition.mcuznz.ca/ and upload a sentinel or costume file
-save in notepad with .cohdemo at the end
-drag to play in the demoshortcut
-weep with joy
-brows the forums here for tips and tricks and samples you can copy paste into your own text file
-feel like a god

aaand that's about it really. day two i had a group shot. day three i had tielekku's crown on my main [a guy] and another character about a foot tall. ^_^ give it a go!

I posted a guide to introduce people on how to edit the database (https://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php?topic=11361.msg218892#msg218892) for Paragon Chat to use NPC/Villain costume parts.

While it isn't an encyclopedia of parts to choose from, if you are okay with doing the above, that's 50% of the battle. Finding the parts is the other 50%.

The simplest to say advice (not necessarily the easiest or fastest method) is to use Icon in NPC mode, put the Mender parts on a toon (this might take some time) and use Demorecord commands to save the costume to a text file (Icon and Demorecord are both documented on Paragon Wiki), then use a database editor to punch in the parts to a costume you have (that last part the guide above can explain).

Bear in mind, NOT ALL NPC PARTS will validate in Paragon Chat as a working player costume. It took some trial and error by the community to get Crab Spiders back with their leggy backpacks, after all. And once a working DB Edited costume is in place, visiting a tailor to edit THAT costume slot (one with a lock on it) will lose the DB Edited changes. (Any non-locked costume you're still free to change at a tailor at will.) BUT if you do get stuck with a non-working part, sharing your findings on these boards will get a response from others in your shoes, and possibly an answer. :)
